Worcester Starbucks closing!

rodgre's picture

I had heard that Starbucks was closing 600 stores nationwide, and I was curious about how that would affect the local area. Turns out that the one in downtown Worcester, near the 99 Restaurant (formerly Aku Aku) on Shrewsbury St is going to close.

How will this affect the average Worcesterite?

I go to the one on Gold Star.

Does this mean their sprawl aspirations are being downsized from "Venti" to "Grande"?

Let's hope to "Tall", as I think their coffee kinda sucks.
Whassamatta, not selling enough DMB & Jack Johnson CD's?

blech.

Actually they are closing the Shrewsbury St one not the downtown one. This stinks because I actually really liked the one on Shrewsbury St. It was pretty cool inside. I can understand though, the one near the Hospital must get a lot more business. Plus it is the one with the drive through.

Re: Worcester Starbucks closing!

I recently went to this one for the convenience of their drive through and how close it is to the highway.. zipped off and back on in two seconds.

Ah... I misspoke. I forgot about the Shrewsbury St. one.

Re: Worcester Starbucks closing!

While not relevant, I like the Lalajava on route 9 in Shrewsbury. I've never seen people happier to be making coffee in a hot, stuffy little room.

Re: Worcester Starbucks closing!

Lala rules.

do they have other locations? I was up in Maine and saw a bumper sticker.

Re: Worcester Starbucks closing!

I dont believe it. They do to good of a job on Shrewsbury Street for them to close. everytime I've ever been to the Aku Aku one they've been dead.

Doesn't anyone make coffee at home anymore?

I brew 10 cups at home every morning, two cups or so go in a travel mug and the rest goes to work with me in an honest to goodness Thermos like I'm a construction worker.

I could care less about Starbucks, I'm DD thru and thru.

Re: Worcester Starbucks closing!

DD's coffee has sucked rubber donkey lungs for several years now. Not sure what they did to change it, but it's now sour tasting. Coffee Obsession in Falmouth has the best coffee. Starbuck's is fine, but pricey.

Re: Worcester Starbucks closing!

I am actually surprised it was only this one. When they announced all the closings I thought for sure all the Worcester ones were history.

When you think about it chains don't do so well in that neighborhood.

Not a one in the real main part of lower Shrewsbury St and even as you keep going to upper Shrewsbury St you only have Dunks, Subway and then MacDonald's all the way on the end.

Re: Worcester Starbucks closing!

But,really, if you think about it, just take a look at the Olive Garden and Papa Gino threads. Worcester (or at least posters here) seems to be in love with chains of all kinds. Each Sunday my wife kids and I go out to eat. Our one rule? No chains unless absolutely neccessary (uncontrollable bladder, child meltdown and the like). This is not easy on a Sunday in the Worcester area, but well worth it. We wouldn't have found Cancun's (great service by the way), Concord Inn, Mountain Barn, Benny's, Murphy's Grill. Yeah some are better than others, but I'll be damned if if I have to slog my way through a congealed Bologna Alfredo with some indifferent 19-year-old tart or a video-game addled barrista who could could give a fuck if I ordered my free-trade Kona grande or iced.

I feel it's a victory for the smaller coffee shops in the area.

But I think Dunkin's really killed off Starbucks around here especially with the cheaper prices and the promotional advertisements including Red Sox players.

Re: Worcester Starbucks closing!

I knew West Boylston St would be fine...always a mad house in there...and downtown does a lot of drive through business, as well as weekdays at lunch. I personally would rather go to a high quality independent, but I live in Greendale and there are none up here. So for good quality and convienience, Sbux it is.

ha! I've been into Dunkin Donut's Ice'd Blueberry's lately. put that in your cup and drink it.

Re: Worcester Starbucks closing!

First of all FRUIT FLAVORED COFFEE IS DISGUSTING. It's an insult to the drink. :P I like Starbucks, especially now that they have the skinny version, not that skinny but better than the other places. I go maybe once a week on Grove.

I don't think Shrewsbury Street closing will have that great an impact with the other one so close by.

Re: Worcester Starbucks closing!

I think there is major confusion as to where the Starbucks is near Indian Lake. I said it was on Gold Star, someone else said Park Ave, Stacy said Grove when in reality it is on West Boylston. I too enjoy Starbuck coffee, personally I like the old Venti Blackeye, which is a large coffee with two shots of espresso. I agree with you that fruit in coffee is wrong.
Also if you like Starbucks coffee, Trader Joes has a Bay Blend that comes in whole beans that is damn good for you home brewers. $9.99 for a big ass tin.

Re: Worcester Starbucks closing!

Oh is that considered W. Boylston Street? Hmmm. Never realized that before. I think the only way to do fruit with coffee, is a fruit tart or cheesecake oh yeah baby!

So, do these closings affect the Starbucks in Barnes & Noble?

There's one right down the street from my office. :)

Re: Worcester Starbucks closing!

I am a black coffee kind of guy. starbucks, or bean counter, or lalajava.

on a rare occassion, I will get a paul newman 'extra extra' from Micky D's, or a blueberry from d+d (which I have been liking).

At work, we have free coffee, tea, coke, diet coke, rootbeer, sprite etc. I enjoy tea in the afternoon. :-P

French press and a Zojirushi carafe, brew for four minutes and mellow in the thermos for ~20 minutes.

A friend of mine came up with a good idea for a local coffee shop: a regular sit-down place (wifi, nice chairs, telecommuter friendly, etc.) with a discounted drive through (maybe a Fotomat-style kiosk on the same property?). Limited drinks at the drive up to keep things moving. The question is where? Of course good luck getting a permit for a drive through in this city.

Locally owned non-franchise shops, street venders and just people walking around downtown. Three things that are quickly leaving the city.

Great site man. Thanks for building/running it.
