Sellaband - Crowdfunding

This site has been around a little while now and I haven't heard much about it. I thought I would mention it hear because I like the concept and think all good ideas can be translated into something we can use here in the Woo. This idea in particular is something bands around here could get into if they wanted. www.newassignment.net sums up the site nicely.

"[i]The site basically gives you a MySpace type page to exhibit your mp3s, but instead of friends, you get

The Zimmers!

Formed in early 2007, The Zimmers are not only the oldest gigging band in the world (with an average age of 78), they are also the most celebrated, having recorded their debut album at the famous Abbey Road Studios, under the watchful eye of Acclaimed Producer Mike Hedges.

SUMO no more

SUMO, who is one of my favorite area bands and one of the best live bands around, have decided to call it a day. There is plenty of material available on www.angrysumo.com and if they do a goodbye show, make sure you catch it.

"We have decided to not be a band anymore. It's sad, it's disappointing, it's a little frustrating but it's also a little bit of a relief and it marks the beginning of who knows what interesting new adventures for each of us."

The Neighborhoods in Worcester

The legendary Neighborhoods are reuniting this weekend in our fair city, and it's a pretty big deal. If you're a music fan, be thankful you're in Worcester. Charlene at WoMag has a story on the reunion.

Quote:

So a year and a half ago, when the band was called upon to play a benefit for the owner of The Living Room in Rhode Island (who was hit by a drunk driver and landed in a wheelchair), Minehan and Harrington enlisted Lynch for the gig.

Marketing Your Music

Derek Sivers of CDbaby has a great website with marketing advice for bands. This site is worth reading...

---
Yes you DO sound like something or someone.

Thousands of musicians describe themselves as sounding "Totally unique. There is nothing like this music you have ever heard!" Then when you put on the CD, it's straight-up pop/rock/blues. Instant disappointment.

When asked, many musicians think it's fine to say, "We don't sound like anyone." Or when asked what kind of music they play, say, "You can't describe it. Just check it out."

That's just lazy, inconsiderate, and stupid.

What if a business out in New Jersey somewhere said, "We can't describe what our store does. Just check it out!" Would you get in your car and spend a Saturday driving out to Route 17 to check it out? No!

You have to convince people! Grab their curiosity. Describe what you actually do, in an interesting way!

Make the wheels in their head turn. Make them taste it, hear it, see it, want it.

Be accurate, and don't disappoint. Read that twice: (1) - Be accurate. (2) - Don't disappoint.

This is a creative writing exercise. You can do it. It's important. It will make the right people stop and listen to your music.
