TB Thursdays: It's Contagious

szoback's picture

Now that there's no pesky Celtics game to get in the way, we're ready to rock the Green/Water/Kelley Square/etc (Canal) district with the latest iteration of Turtle Boy Thursdays.

Next Thursday, July 17, we're lining up a fantastic set of live, cover-free music throughout the neighborhood. We'll send out a final schedule later this week, but it looks like over a dozen bars/clubs and bands/musicians will be on the schedule.

A little something for everyone and there's no reason you should be anywhere else next Thursday--there's no other place in Worcester with this much going on in one night, in one place.

And if you're a bar/club owner or musician who wants to be a part of the TB Thursdays, shoot me a message---

Re: TB Thursdays: It's Contagious

I'll be "on the wagon" with Bob Largess and will be walking up and down Green St with a couple of ukulele acts promoting UkeStock 08 .
I hope my uke doesn't melt from the heat .

Re: TB Thursdays: It's Contagious

Looking forward to it. I actually have the night off. I wish there were more bands though.

Re: TB Thursdays: It's Contagious

I want more too Gabe!

Our goal is to build the momentum, and have every month be bigger than the one before...more clubs, and more bands.
We've already had a number of excellent Worcester groups with members on vacation this month who have asked to be involved in August and beyond. We'd like the monthly event to be a little more like the Music Awards we had in April with bands playing throughout the night, from after work through closing.

I can't wait . I've been practicing my Violent Femmes and Pink Floyd on uke .

Re: TB Thursdays: It's Contagious

I can't be 100%, but I got a call last night that made it sound like Governor Deval Patrick might be taking a ride up the street in Bob Largess' horse cart or carriage at some point tonight.

Best political move ever.

He can buy my vote by sitting in with us. The offer is out there Deval, what's it gonna be? Miles Davis? Aretha? James Taylor? Whatever you want.

If I'm playing "on the wagon" and the Gov is there what should I play ? The Femmes "Kiss off", Ozzy "Crazy Train " , "Stairway to Gilligans Island" ? I'm open for suggestions .

Re: TB Thursdays: It's Contagious

Anyone else have a really awesome time last night?

Started at the Dive and wound my way down to the Greyhound, The Hotel Vernon, Nick's, and then ended back at the Dive.

Along the way I saw good friends, dudes play insane acoustic guitar through crazy pedal boards, old dudes rule over just about anyone 20 years their junior, an entire bar singing Irish drinking songs (that didn't even include the live entertainment, just the patrons) and light political scandal!

All the things you want from a night out drinking and carousing!

Re: TB Thursdays: It's Contagious

I had fun , I just wish the crowds were a little better . There definately was more people out on the Turtle Boy Awards Night.
I was surprised there wasn't more people at the Vernon to see the Silverbacks. There was maybe 10 people at given times , those guys deserve a 110 . Cliff Goodwin totally rocks and the band was awesome.
We need to hype it up for August and create a "buzz" about it now for 8-21.

Re: TB Thursdays: It's Contagious

And August is upon us...

Next Thursday night is looking a little...well, ridiculous. I don't know if any event in Worcester has EVER had this many bars looking to be involved.

If you're a musician/band looking to get on the schedule, there's still time. And if you're a bar/club owner I haven't talked to, get in touch quick.

And if you're just going out to enjoy, put in for a personal day Friday.

Will the participants be accepting tips? Wink, nudge.

Hi! :-)

Re: TB Thursdays: It's Contagious

I can't wait to see Can't Kill Katie !
And of course Duncan and the dive bar quartet .
It's hard to choose between dollar PBR's and hand craft beer.
I think I'm gonna busk outside of the dive and the vernon .

Re: TB Thursdays: It's Contagious

Make sure you get permission from the Vernon and the Greyhound. Oh and you should probably move every 5 minutes.

Do you have a permit?

Amazing Dick's picture

Re: TB Thursdays: It's Contagious

If I move every five minutes I'll spend my time in a bathroom.
Permit ? We don't need no stinking permits !
Viva La Ukulele Revolution !
Bob at the Vernon is down with it .
Theres open storefrontage outside of the Dive that I played by last month.

To quote Annie " the uke's will come out tomorrow , bet cha' bottom dollar that tomorrow they'll be uke's".

Re: TB Thursdays: It's Contagious

I had a "wicked" good time last night. I got to jam with Allen Fletcher at the Block 5 , Allen played the accordian . I rode around on the haywagon with Bob and entertained the "neighborhood" kids.
Duncan and the Dive Quartet were "spot on" and totally swung . I also enjoyed The Numbskulls with Cant Kill Katie and Slitstitch at the Vernon.
Good luck to Katie on their tour that started today.
Peace Out

Oh yeah ,Scott are we doing it again in September ?

Re: TB Thursdays: It's Contagious

Thanks Dick, and thanks to everyone who played/hosted/came out last night. I had a great time, and it looked like everyone else did. It's a great sign when you can't find parking to your own event at 6:30pm, and again at 11:30.

Special thanks to Chet Williamson for agreeing to play at Block5 on short notice for our little WoMag/Fletcher celebration.

As for September: I don't know what form TB will take, as obviously we're going through a transition here. But I'd be surprised if it didn't happen. And if it does, it's going to be an absolute blow-out.

See you guys then.
