Swervedriver

I am going to see Swervedriver tonight at the Paradise.

yes I am psyched.

---
It's been nigh on ten years since Swervedriver's 99th Dream, which even the least casual observer might've pegged their swan song. And perhaps it was: on record, anyway. We'll just have to wait and see.

But for now, these boys-- Adam Franklin, Jimmy Hartridge, Steve George, and Jez Hindmarsh-- have announced an end to their extended hiatus, as the fondly remembered Swervedriver plans to tour the world early next year, breaking almost a decade of silence.

Re: Swervedriver

Heck yeah it was a good show. I didn't really see the openner (and forget the name...Roger says they sounded Scottish) but the first song or two sounded very genre-appropriate for the show.

Longwave was on second, and they performed a really great set. Admittedly an regardless of a few shows we've (tCS) shared with Longwave I do not know alot of their songs...but they are a great band, good stage presence, and I was giddy when they played "Tidal Wave"...awesome.

Then Swervedriver takes the stage openning with Sci-Flyer. Amazing. The guys seem pretty laid back visually but still intense and tight musically as they run through some crowd faves and some cool b-sides... then by "son of mustang ford" they started to really "get into it" (maybe they weren't "warmed up" until then...) and continuted that through the two song encore (was very happy to hear "Last Train to Satansville...believe that!)

All in all a pretty awesome way to spend a Tuesday nite with some friends and some cool music we'll probably not have the chance to see live again...well, maybe for another 10 years... :)

I'm out getting my abs airbrushed on...leave a message

Re: Swervedriver

I thought Swervedriver were great, though I felt that there wasn't a lot of energy from the band. I kept feeling that the drummer was losing steam here and there and dropping the tempo a bit. Could be the fact that it was 120 degrees in the Paradise, I dunno.

Adam's guitar playing was awesome and the setlist was pretty varied, covering all of their CDs.

This isn't the correct order, but from what I recall (and checking samples from my Itunes to be sure of titles) here's what they played from my recollection:

For Seeking Heat
Sci-Flyer
The Other Jesus
Duel
Planes over the Skyline
The Birds
Feel So Real
These Times
Sandblasted
Never Lose That Feeling
Wrong Treats
The Sound and The Times
Last Train to Satansville
Rave Down
Son of Mustang Ford
Deep Seat

The encore ended with an awesome Duress.

I might be alone in this, but I thought Longwave were awesome. I thought their set technically sounded better than Swervedriver, and they were more exciting on stage. They played a good mix of old and new stuff too, including that awesome "Daysleeper" instrumental which is a veritable advertisement for abusing delay pedals.

Scottish band Terra Diablo played first. They were okay. I might have liked them better if I knew their music first. Not bad, but nothing that stuck with me. Kind of typical post-shoegazer indie rock. They covered "Tomorrow Never Knows" by the Beatles, which was kind of a cool move to get an unfamiliar audience interested in them.

Well, I said the singer's accent sounded Scottish. I don't want people to get the impression that they were all bagpipey or anything. Musically, they reminded me of a cross between the classic 'gazer/rock bands like Swervedriver and Dinosaur Jr. but with dropped-tuned guitars which gave them a more "current" rock sound. Not as dreamy as My Vitriol and not as tough as BRMC. Somewhere in the middle. Not bad. Definitely not a bad opener.

I was trying to think of what I would have changed on the bill to make it the greatest show in Paradise history (and it's hard to top Ocean Colour Scene, Catherine Wheel and House of Love back in '92) and I think I would have put Longwave on first, Mogwai on second and Swervedriver to close. Something like that.

Re: Swervedriver

Even though the show was great, Blowin' Cool and Last Day On Earth would have made my experience perfect.
I thought Adam seemed a bit dis-interested in the whole thing but his playing (and effects) were stellar.
They had some great retro '91 tshirts with the original RAISE/effect pedal tour art on it. They quite possibly could have been "left overs" from that tour...as all they had were M & L sizes. Too bad no big boy sizes.
I don't know what it'd be worth but I still think I may try to get Longwave back to the Lucky Dog.
I listened to Endsongs all day yesterday. Man, I miss 'em.
Those pics are great Duncan.
I had a great time with you guys, thanks for thinking of me!
