Scotch

Do you like it, do you not like it?

There are some options in Worcester with the free Single Malt Mondays tastings at KJ Baaron's in Washington Sq and the crazy 26 single malt collection over at the Greyhound in Kelley Sq. It's also cool to just ask what a place has behind the counter as recently I have found Aberlour at the Sahara, The Balvenie at the Lucky Dog and Langavulin at that place at the corner of James and Stafford (name escapes me)

I have only been into it for about a year and have really grown a taste for this stuff:

Anyone else here a scotch drinker?

Re: Scotch

I like it, but I am rarely in the mood for it. And I have a reputation to maintain.

My go-to for scotch is typically Oban. And although not scotch, I also enjoy Redbreast irish whiskey quite a bit.

Re: Scotch

Oban is pretty tasty. I haven't had Redbreast yet.

Re: Scotch

O'Connor's has a good selection of Irish whiskey. They probably carry just about every one that is available in these parts, even that ludicrously expensive Midleton in the wooden box. They do have Redbreast there, as well as some of the higher-end non-swill Jamesons/Bushmills stuff.

Double post...I love my glens: Glenlivit, Glenfiddich (sp?)

Re: Scotch

The Greyhound has that Midleton. That stuff is goooood.

KJ baron's has a single Malt tasting every Monday from 5-8 I think. You can taste away.

Yep usually 2 or 3 different single malts and some food that pairs well with them. I think doing an all Irish single malt tasting was talked about for this Monday.

Re: Scotch

Nothing below 18 yo. if I'm going to drink it neat, otherwise it gets a splash. KJ as a good local selection but if you're willing to take to exasperatingly long trek (possibly with a Sherpa) I'd go to Julio’s, cause you know you're coming home with a couple of beers too. I'm interested to see what the Abby ends up having.

Re: Scotch

I have no real brand preference but I do prefer Islay whiskys over the other regions.

I like Glenlivet a lot. Rusty Nails are awesome.

Chris Clemens says the 'Hound has 30 scotch' now. :)

Re: Scotch

The Benromach Organic and Compass Box Peat Monster are my two favorites. Though they are extremely hard to come by. Both hand made and fairly pricey.

Gabe, I have both on hand so if you would like to sample them just let me know.

Re: Scotch

My favorites (in no particular order):

Caol Ila 18 yr.
Balvenie 21 yr. Port Wood
Bowmore Dawn single malt
Laphroaig 15 yr.
Oban 14
Balvenie 15 yr.

I certainly have to disagree with the person who says nothing under 18 year old. Many times all you're paying for is a number and NOT a taste.

Green Spot
Oban
Laphroig

They're all amazing.

Re: Scotch

Agreed. I love that phenolic, seaweedy taste.

Yeah exactly. The bottle of Laphroaig Original Cask that I have is a 10 and if I catch anyone going near that stuff with anything besides a glass and what is in the bottle some people are going to get smacked.

I wish I liked it. that and I sometimes wish I was a pipe smoker. actually, think I might officially quit snuff and get into pipesmoking as a substitute.

Life's short. Touch Art.

Re: Scotch

Love the Islay Scotches, particularly the Laphroig 15, but the Springbank 25 (yeah, I know it's pricey and a Campbeltown to boot) might be what God drinks when he's thirsty!

Re: Scotch

Oh, and can we talk about great value cognacs now?

Kelt VSOP. I'd like to be buried in it.

Springbank Campbeltown, any bottling.

Re: Scotch

always think of this line from "MISTER MOM"

Keaton: "Hey, can I offer you a beer"

Other dude: What, no, it's 10 in the morning.......

Keaton: Scotch?

They have been a blast. I have developed a little Monday evening ritual of 10 cent tacos and a Magner's at Jose Murphy's followed by the scotch tasting at KJ Baaron's. I invite anyone who is going to the Net Mix to join me for this on Monday and then we can head over to Nick's afterwards.

Re: Scotch

What? Are we fucking alcoholics??

Re: Scotch

Just wanted to say a quick note of thanks to steele for posting a quote from Mr. Mom. The following lines in that scene are equally good:

"You doing it all in 220?"

"Yeah, 220, 221, whatever it takes."

Now if you (or anyone else) can reel off something from Night Shift, I will be really impressed. 'Cause that was Keaton's crowning achievement.
