I know there are some XM/Sirius fans here, and wondered what they think of this idea that both satellite and terrestrial radio will fade away before too long.
The new business of free radio:
Radio as a practice won't go away. Nor will the industry. But the need for transmitters to occupy large quantities of real estate, and to suck large quantities of power off the grid, will be substantially reduced.
I "listen to the radio" for about an hour a day, entirely over the net (on a Chumby).

I'm not really a public radio insider, (though I did go to a public radio conference last year and I do subscribe to The New Yorker), but here's what I can see from my vantage point . . . .
Re: Is satellite radio doomed?
I enjoy Sirius and NEVER listen to FM anymore. From Stern to the Underground Garage, to Radio Classics and the dozen other channels I listen to, there is really no reason to go back.
But I think the government will try to squash satellite as the National Association of Broadcasters have a huge lobby in DC.
I think there will always be an audience for radio as long as they keep putting them in cars. As for computer, I can listen to Sirius on line, as well as NPR, Weimar Radfunk on Live 365, and podcasts, too.
So as cassettes were supposed to be the death of the music industry, I don't think that anything will kill FM or AM radio.

Re: Is satellite radio doomed?
I haven't listened to FM radio for well over two years. I can't speculate on what will become of AM/FM but I know that Sirius is worth every penny. It's total bullshit for the government to be getting involved in regulating what XM and Sirius will be able to do if they merge.
Re: Is satellite radio doomed?
I have XM and love it. I get all the MLB games some very specific programming that can always fit my mood. Plus, no commercials. Although lately there have been some dumb DJ's.
Re: Is satellite radio doomed?
FM radio is completely terrible nowadays.
The same songs on rotation, computerized voices instead of actual DJs.
and way too much Eagles and Bob Seger.
Re: Is satellite radio doomed?
I listen to Sirius for 10 to 11 hours a day during the workweek and that is not a joke. Most of my time is spent on Howard 100 and H101, but I enjoy the breadth of of programming and spend plenty of time with varied music stations and a bit of news.
I have not listened to ANY FM music station in over 3 years but I might put on 'WEEI on occasion.
I'll gladly pay my $12.99 a month now, and probably even after Stern is gone, for as long as I am working a desk job that allows me to listen as much as I do you can not beat it.
