restaurant review - Roma's

terrible_buddhist's picture

I had a few people ask me about this place as its pretty new. As part of Christina's birthday surprise, I decided to take her to dinner there.

While making our way to the Dive Bar from the blackstone tap some weeks ago, we stumbled upon a new restaurant called Roma's, on Harding St. We said out normal 'oh neat, we will have to try that some day' and trudged on in search of Racer 5.

On Christina's birthday we made it back to Roma's. Its located on Harding St., and parking can be a little sketchy, but we managed to find a spot. The restaurant seems to be half kitchen and a small but loud dining area. We seemed to get there at 'just the right time' as we were seated quickly, others that came after us weren't so lucky.

We were seated by an exuberant lady and attended to by our waitress soon after. Then came the good news and bad news. The good news, they are BYOB, the bad...we didn't 'b' any 'b'.

We started off with the Calamari, served as many places do now, with banana peppers. I have a few high water marks on Calamari prepared this way, tops, believe it or not, is Ma Glockners. Honestly, there is nothing else there I will eat, but their calamari is just outstanding. The other is Providence Prime in...well...Providence. It is about as close to perfect as you can get, but, you pay for that premium.

Any way, the Calamari was ok, really, borderline bland. The calamari was small and light as I like it, but also chewy and not very flavorful. I think I would skip this one in the future.

We had a hard time deciding what we where going to get, before deciding on a sausage and fresh mozzarella pizza and a linguine with a white garlic sauce, spinach, prosciutto, and sun dried tomatoes.

*side bar #1* While waiting for our dinner we had some time to people watch, which is among Christina's top 5 little pleasures in life. As I said before, the dining room is small, so tables need to keep moving. There was this group of people that probably hung out at their table for a half hour, maybe more, after their dinner was done...just drinking their brought in booze. Meanwhile people are lining up to get in. Just seems rude to me.

After 15 minutes or so, my linguine dish comes out, and we are assured the pizza will be out soon. Christina and I shared the linguine in the mean time, both of us exclaiming how excellent it was. The sauce was thick and creamy, the prosciutto was plentiful, the brazed spinach a nice addition, and the sun dried tomato, while very good, may have been just a bit too much, but that is just being nit-picky.

You can tell there are still growing pains, as the pizza didn't come for yet another 15-20 minutes after. Normally, this would have been pretty annoying, but I was trying to buy time before we met some friends at the dive bar after dinner for a mini surprise party.

The pizza wasn't really what we expected. We both had in our heads that it was going to be a thin crust type pizza, but instead was more of a medium thickness. The crust had a nice consistency however, doughy in the crust, a little lighter in the center. The sausage was nice and spicy, and the fresh mozzarella, while good, could have been more plentiful...though take that with a grain of salt, as I can never have enough cheese.

We each had a slice, but after waiting so long, we where pretty full from the linguine, sort of a blessing in disguise. The bill came to about $40 or so, which we didn't think was bad for an appetizer, 2 entrees, and a soda. The BYOB thing would have been nice to know upfront, but I comforted myself through dinner knowing racer 5 was in my immediate future.

*side bar #2* IT WASN'T! The dive bar didn't have racer 5 on tap that night. I wept and had to try other beers.

I think we will go back again, but I would more than likely do it on a weekday when its less likely to be busy and hard to get a table.

Re: restaurant review - Roma's

Great review i can relate to the calamari, i also enjoy it small cut thin, the chewiness is always hit or miss at most places, it depends i think on how hot the oil is when they fry it. last summer i took royal caribbean to italy with some friends and we are food lovers and tried to go to as many local places that people would recommend to us rather then staying on the normal tourist route.

Yeah so I am at State Liquors last night, looking up and down for RACER 5....NOWHERE TO BE FOUND...what, you can't buy it at State Liquors? They had every other freaking micro brew house concoction, but no Racer 5...what gives?

So, instead I bought a bottle of Baileys, a bottle of Disaronno (wanted to try it), and a 6 pack of STRONGBOW..which is this English Hard Cider that I saw in there that I never tried....I love me some hard cider and always try different brands.

....but no Racer 5 to be found.

Re: restaurant review - Roma's

What did you think of the Strongbow? One of my favorites.

Re: restaurant review - Roma's

so after i had purchased the Strongbow, i went online just to research it a bit...turns it's the #1 cider in the UK....even more popular then Magners (which I know is from Ireland anyway)......but Magners used to be my favorite, but I think I like Strongbow even better......had my first bottle on christmas eve.........went down smooth, and I loved it. Went great with the 345,845 pieces of cheese I had.

hey man, cut me some slack, I actually went to my first GUN SHOW ever....it was 2 weeks ago at the BIG E.
My wifes dad is all into guns, a big hunter, etc....so I had told him in passing, I was thinking of getting a piece just for the house, and he jumped on it and asked me to go to the gun show with him to see what is what.

what a cast of characters those places attract, I tell ya.

Was the only one there walking around with a CALLOWAY golf hat on, that was for sure.

anyhoo, I do want to get a gun cuz we live in the sticks....so I found a nice little 22 caliber handgun I want to get. It's a Walther P22, and will do me just right. Goes for about $380. Now I gotta just get all my permits soon, before Obama changes the laws and raises the price of bullets to $1000 a case.

Note: Never in a million years have i ever wanted a gun or had any inclination to get one......but we live in the middle of nowhere and we could scream bloody murder and no one would hear us......I had to step up to the plate.

Woodchuck Cider is my favorite, with Guinness on top. We have been selling a ton of Chuckberrys (cider/blueberry ale) lately too.

Re: restaurant review - Roma's

woodchuck is very good as well, never tried a chuckberry though.

North End Pub sells Woodchuck in bottles (not on tap), but I might be the only person that ever bought one there.

Re: restaurant review - Roma's

Hey Steele, I too am at work....the only one in my group and one of two in the entire dept.

I also didn't realize you were an hourly employee...nice. They wouldn't fall for that in R&D...most of us work 50hr/wk as it is.

Re: restaurant review - Roma's

believe it or not, depending on your dept and/or position...it's better to be an hourly employee in many situations.......when overtime is flowing (which it is NOT this year, unfortunatley), many hourly employees make more then some managers (in some cases).

Not trying to go too OT here but what is involved to get a permit? I'm curious.

Re: restaurant review - Roma's

well, i have to go down to my town hall and fill out a request for a FID card and also sign up for a firearms safety class......all this costs about $100.00.
then I take the class and they send me a piece of paper in the mail saying i successfully completed the class. Then I take the said piece of paper somewhere and then I officially apply for the FID card and they finger print me and run my prints through the data base just to make sure I'm not the DC sniper or something......then, if I come out clean, I get the card in the mail.

then, i can go shopping for a gun....MA has some tough laws though.
most guns that people walk around in their hip holster in TX, WY, MT, etc, are illegal in MA...but i dont want to carry it...just keep it in the house .somehwere...maybe in the box of Cheerios like Vivica Fox.

Yeah, that would be cool.

handgun in the house in the middle of the woods where no one can hear you scream...excellent idea!

Re: restaurant review - Roma's

Deval Patrick supposedly lower the cost of getting a permit to $40. I don't know when or if that is going to take effect.

Re: restaurant review - Roma's

What's the reasoning for reducing the permit cost?
