Rare Beatles music thread #19

At the request of the webmaster, I offer up this sampling of John Lennon home demos. Contrary to what John said of his “house husband” period of 1975-80, that he never recorded any music and that he put his guitar to the side to bring up Sean and “bake bread”, he was quite prolific laying down many demos. Most of these were VERY introspective relating to where he was at this point in his life and the second bout of fatherhood.

The recordings also contain demos of the 2 songs Harrison, McCartney and Starr (The Threetles) would record backings over for the Beatles “Anthology” project in the early ‘90’s, “Free As A Bird” and “Real Love”.

Also included is the 3rd song they also started work on but never finished, “Now And Then”. Jeff Lynne (producer of the first 2) stated in an interview in the UK’s Record Collector Magazine, “"It was one day – one afternoon, really – messing with it. The song had a chorus but is almost totally lacking in verses. We did the backing track, a rough go that we really didn't finish." McCartney said Harrison “didn’t want to do it”, but to me the major problem is the buzz that is present throughout the song.

The song “Life Begins At 40” was given to Ringo in late November of 1980 and would appear on his “Stop And Smell The Roses” LP. “You Saved My Soul” is the last Lennon demo to surface, coming from a cassette dated November 14, 1980.

Re: Rare Beatles music thread #19

I bought a Beatles cassette on ebay and tried to find out about it's origins (Rare Beatles on Phoenix Records), but instead had the real good fortune to stumble across your stuff here Louie. (Never did find out anything about the cassette, but who cares!)
Absolutely wonderful stuff. Thank you so much. Didn't make my day; made my year!

Stay tuned. I got loads more coming. I try to put up at least one post a week, but work and vacations sometime get in the way.
