Re: Pulse Awards?

Thanks Matt. In light of how we all can bash these awards and how it's nearly impossible to have any sort of credibility when you're putting together an award ballot in this city, the only thing that really mattered was the moment that Erick Godin handed that award to me. It may mean a lot to some, or nothing to most, but between Erick and myself, it was a very nice gesture. That's the part that I'll remember.

I'll try to forget the part where I said that my boobs were just as nice as Amanda Lirange's and asked why I didn't also win "sexiest musician." That's how you know it was all fixed. :)

Congratulations to everyone who was nominated (though I have to admit that I have some homework to do in order to get to know who most of the nominees were, as I had no clue). Congratulations to the Pulse for putting on a pretty slick show. Of course, congratulations to my friend Amanda for makin' all the young boys squirm. Now let's just get her back into a band one of these days. :)

Now I'm sorry I wasn't there.

Congratulations to the other winners, but extra special congratulations to Roger, who is the best.

Re: Pulse Awards?

I'm often confused when it comes to local award show bashing. Isn't it nice just get recognition for all the hard work you put in...a pat on the back, a simple "good job" perhaps? I never understood this argument of "credibility"--it's fucking Worcester MA, not Seattle, not even Boston. It's a incestual little scene, and that's great. How much credibility does the Boston Phoenix Music Poll have anyways?

If some magazine wants to give out free grub and a light show to put a spotlight on local talent, I suggest show up on an empty stomach and dig in.

Magazines, regardless of their intentions, put these shows on to celebrate what musical culture we do happen to have in Worcester and it should be embraced, not spit on.

With that being said- Roger be proud man, you should care...you deserve it.

Re: Pulse Awards?

The 'Skulls are very good people.

I should add that I wasn't boycotting the Pulse Awards or anything.  I've attended the last couple and they have been very nice affairs.  We won some awards for which we were very grateful, and I got to see lots of folks that I don't run into as much anymore.   Just had to work late and missed it this year.

Zippy, if you haven't been around, usually the bashing is from the bands not nominated and/or winning the awards. It used to last for 6-8 pages of amusing posts every year, which made for interesting reading at times (though not always), now people don't even bother. Man, I miss those days!

Re: Pulse Awards?

Since I started this thread, I will say, that I am not into awards for music at all. I think they are silly. I am glad when we win in a sort of reaffirming way, but think the whole idea, either the popular vote or the "by commitee way". It has nothing to do with Worcester, Boston, NY or whatever.

That being said, I am so glad that Roger was honored the other night and am sad that I missed that. Of everyone in the area that deserves recognition for what he does for our little scene it is him. Roger is our glue. He may not know it, but he is responsible in a large way for making this group so tight. I have met more of the people involved in this scene through him, either at gigs or at the studio or even at his house. The man knows everyone and gets along with everyone. We all love Roger because he is simply one of the nicest persons you will ever meet. And by the way, the dude has talent. He has amazing knowledge and instincts in the studio that makes him an intergal part of any project that he takes part in without ever getting in the way of the band. It's simply amazing. He fits himself into every project. As a guitar player, there are few around here that are better. He is versitile and tastful in his playing. HE is one of my favorite people ever to sing with. Singing the Everly Brothers with him was one of the most natural and fun jobs I have ever done. And songwriting is top notch. Diver, Every Corner of the Room, Two Wonderful Star, Beautiful Song, Marigold Girl- all perfect pop songs and that is just from the last TCS record. The man can turn a phrase and write a melody.

Let's just say that I love Roger and the best thing that any of these silly award things has ever done is honor him. Probably the youngest life-time achievement award ever.

Re: Pulse Awards?

Whoah Michael. I think I must owe you dinner. Thank you for the kind words. I'm embarrassed to read it.

Like I said at Irish Times, I think this area has an abundance of talent that may or may not get appreciated by the masses. That's one thing that keeps my eye on the horizon. There's always something surprising around the corner in this town. It makes me proud to be a part of this scene, underachieving as it may be. No trophies necessary. I love the fact that a lot of my favorite music to listen to is made by people I can call friends. Some, I can even consider family.
