Piano Tuning

duncan's picture

If anyone is looking for a piano tuner, I just had my upright tuned by George Evans at Massachusetts Pianocraft. He did an excellent job, I highly recommend him. He is located in Worcester. Let him know I sent you.

Remember you should tune your piano at least a couple times a year. Fall and Spring are good times to do it.

Re: Piano Tuning

I use a student of George's at Clark. His name is Colin McCoulagh. He does a great job.

Re: Piano Tuning

I had really neglected my piano the past few years. I had no idea that it could sound so nice. He tuned it twice as well as conditioned some of the hammers to even out the tone amongst a bunch of other mysterious piano tuner stuff.

Now I just wish I played better. At least when Mossberg comes over it will sound better :)

Just had mine tuned by George

Just had mine tuned by George last week, who is not only a great and interesting guy, but also sells used pianos.  We bought our upright from him, and when we want to trade up, we get full credit for what we paid for it ($1400).

He is trying to convince me to buy a baby grand he has, and I am trying to convince my wife that we don't need to buy new clothes for the next six years so that we can afford it.

But, anyway, I second Duncan's recommendation!

Thanks for the tip duncan.

Thanks for the tip duncan.  Very good to know.

Mine hasn't been tuned for a while, plus I need the action adjusted as well.  Got some sticky and misadjusted keys.

It's a boy Mrs. Walker, it's a boy...

George does a really nice

George does a really nice job. If it hasn't been done it a while, he will likely need to tune it twice to get it right. He is very thorough with his work, he even treated a few of the hammers in my piano to give it a more even tone.  He applied some magical solution to them.

depends on the condition of the piano when he starts but if it is a regular tuning, nothing crazy, I believe it's under $100, around $80. If the piano needs two tunings and conditioning and all that it will be more.

thats cool.

i have a decent upright.  nothing to rave about soundwise, but its in great physical shape.  i dig it.  $100 is worth it sounding good.

if you look close enough you might be able to see my autographed dusty cobb head shot.

Sometimes they can put a sort

Sometimes they can put a sort of laquer on the hammer felts if they are spongy and not producing equal volume.   Fascinating what goes into a complete tuning.

Ours is an late teens/early '20's (haven't been able to nail the exact date down, but an doing research) Bush & Lane upright.  Very nice piano that deserves to be put right.

Duncan, I read a cool book about pianos recently that I should lend you.  I think you'd love it.

George tunes mine every six

George tunes mine every six months, and it's always $80.

I also read a cool book last year about pianos called The Piano Shop on the Left Bank, or something like that.  It was really interesting about the history and construction of pianos, mixed with the personal story of this guy hanging around this piano repair shop in Paris.

Jim, that's the book.  Wasn't it great?

Yeah, it was.  As soon as I

Yeah, it was.  As soon as I finished that book, I called George for a tuning, and I sat and watched him do it because I was so interested to see the inside of a piano after reading so much about them.

That book is also what planted in me the quixotic fantasy of convincing my wife that we need to buy a baby grand (we have the PERFECT room for it).  So while the book itself cost me around $12, it may end up costing me about $6000.

Anyway, it's a great book about falling in love with a musical instrument--I think any musician or music lover would enjoy it.
