Pet Rock Festival Celebrates Ten Years of Helping Animals, J. Geils Band Member Headlines
Worcester, Massachusetts: The 10th Annual Pet Rock Festival will take place Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008 [rain date, Sept. 21] from noon to 5 p.m., at Quinsigamond Community College, 670 West Boylston St., Worcester.
Pet Rock is the largest animal expo on the East Coast. A daylong festival of fundraising fun for the entire family, including your dog, Pet Rock’s primary purpose is to promote responsible pet ownership, bring attention to animal cruelty and educate humans on a variety of animal related issues. Proceeds benefit New England based animal welfare organizations that include Humane Society Youth, Animal Legal Defense Fund, New England Primate Sanctuary, MSPCA, NEADS, Foster Parrots and many more.
But the focus is on fun, too. Pet Rock Fest boasts live music, vendors, vegetarian fare, games, prizes, raffles, guest speakers, rides and more than 200 breed rescues, shelters and animal welfare organizations. Past musical headliners have included Sophie B Hawkins, Deep Blue Something, Badfinger, Orleans, Babaloo and American Idol winners.
This year, we welcome Danny Klein’s Full House. An 11-piece R&B powerhouse, this band is led by Klein, who played bass with Boston’s J. Geils Band. Full House will deliver a set “celebrating the music of the J. Geils Band.” Supporting acts include Pet Rock (the band), The Howl and Soulstice.
But your pet is the star of the day! (Remember your dog is more than welcome, but for safety reasons we ask that other pets stay home). There are contests, pet astrology readings, amateur dog show (with categories such as “owner-dog look alike” and “best vocalist”), New England Trailblazers flyball team, the Gemini Agility Course, adoptable pet parade with prizes for participating rescues, professional photos portraits of your pet, cat photo contest and the always-popular doggie water park.
The purpose: to promote kindness to animals, raise funds and awareness of animal welfare issues and inform the public
how they can help our furry friends.
Remember, they can’t talk, so we will.

Re: Pet Rock Festival
phew... I wasn't sure how I was going to explain this to the Dog if I had to bail on her. See you all there.
Re: Pet Rock Festival
This was so much fun! We saw lot's of friends, lot's of pups and ate awesome veggie food! The dogs are pooped, asleep at my feet. Once again, great job to the organizers and volunteers, you should all be proud of what you do.

Re: Pet Rock Festival
what a total blast that was - lots of people, lots of dogs, lots of good food (noshed on some buddha hut steamed spring rolls without having to watch supreme master tv - quite a treat), and lots of fun. i've never been much of a j geils fan, but you know - strolling around and frolicking with the pup it seemed to be the perfect good-time all american fun music to have playing in the background...that band was a lot of fun
petrock is definitely on my yearly do-to list now
thanks to all who helped put this great event on
Re: Pet Rock Festival
My twelve-year old daughter went with some friends today, and came home and announced at dinner that she was becoming a vegan. While I admire her courage in taking this step (and will support it), it's going to be a colossal pain for my wife and me to make sure she gets enough protein in her diet. She has agreed to make one exception and drink the raw milk that I get from a local farm, so that will help.
But if anyone has tips on helping a girl that age eat right on a vegan diet, I'd appreciate them.

Re: Pet Rock Festival
While there are some very intelligent people on this here board, I recommend that you talk to her pediatrician about suggestions for your fabulous daughter. They may have some suggestions about amount of protein and carbohydrate young children need. They may also have an opinion on how much of that protein should come from soy products as there have been recommendations that women of certain stages of life limit their soy intake. Don't forget to discuss sleep, kids today are sooo sleep deprived!
Other than that technical stuff, I'm sure our vegan friends on this board will be able to give you lots of suggestions for protein sources that are not just processed junk from a box. I know I've seen many conversations about beans, quinoa and nuts etc.
Good luck to her and to you both in your efforts to support her. It's nice to hear parents supporting their kids like that.
Hi! :-)
Re: Pet Rock Festival
from my adventures with my two teen vegan girls:
try every brand of veggie burger and stock up on the ones she likes - that way she's always got a "center of the plate" item for when you just can't deal with making a second entree.
it's all about the beans - put 'em in and on everything ---chick peas on the salads, kidney or white beans in the vegetarian vegetable soup
lentils and spagetti and pasta ceci are the parents-of-the-vegan's best friend
we always have a lot of nuts in the house - almonds and peanuts especially
if she'll drink the milk, she'll probably eat the yogurt - so make yogurt with the milk and you will have smoothies as well as a nice sour cream substitute for baked potatoes and who knows what else
invest in two cookbooks
1. vegan with a vengance - super simple super tasty, not wacky, everyday vegan fare...we use this book all the time and i've never made anything out of it that wasn't truly tasty - except for the recipes using tempe which no one in our house can stand
2. quick-fix vegetarian by robin robertson - the book doesn't say that it's vegan, but it is. no dairy at all and everything can be on the table in 30 minutes. this is our go-to when no one has the energy to make anything..nothing kooky, nothing complicated. everything we've made from this book has been fabulous too. a lot of these could be made by an ambitious 12 year old as well!
my research on this tells me that concerns about protein are pretty unwarranted...someone eating a diet with plenty of grains and fruits and veggies will get plenty of protein - most americans (children and adults) consume way more protien than their bodies can possibly use.
good luck.
Re: Pet Rock Festival
Check if she's a human being. If she is, the healthiest diet will contain both meat and vegetables. If she's not, buy one of those cookbooks.
Re: Pet Rock Festival
Lincoln,
Check if she's a human being? Really?
I'm so glad you've decided to pick on teenage girls and the parents who try to do the right thing by them. You must feel very good about that.
Re: Pet Rock Festival
Pet Rock is a great festival. I'm sad my sister's dog moved to maine. i did not attend this year.
Jim... lots of opinion about protein out there. yes, we require very little, but we should have a very little balanced protein at every meal. protein is the fuel for hormones and enzymes etc.
Protein can be classified as complete and incomplete. Complete protein comes from animal sources such as meat, chicken, fish, dairy products, and eggs. Complete protein contains all the essential amino acids the body needs. These animal proteins are also the only reliable source of vitamin B12.
Incomplete protein comes from fruits and vegetables. These foods are low in one or more of the essential amino acids. Nuts, seeds, legumes, and grains all vary in their protein content and vegetarians will needs to combine these foods in the right way to get complete protein. Vitamin B12 however, will still need to be supplemented.
Soybeans are one of the few vegetable sources that will supply complete protein which will give a little more flexibility when combining foods. (as stated, soy can be a controversial food)
Re: Pet Rock Festival
Thanks, everyone. That's very helpful. We had already planned to make an appointment with her pediatrician, and I will get those cookbooks, Gigi. I'm printing out this thread for her as well so she can read it herself.
Re: Pet Rock Festival
While I am not vegan, I have been a vegetarian for close to 16 yrs(started when I was 12). At that age I was pretty much on my own as far as meals went. I ate a lot of crap, I'll be honest. Minute rice, mac and cheese...lots of pasta, pizza and just plain crap. For those of you fearing health problems, while I'm sure I could have eaten better I never once had a bad review at the doc. My mother made me have blood tests 2x/yr for anemia etc and I've never had to take a supplement per doc's orders. I try to now just to be sure but I still get checked regularly and come back clear. My diet has become much healthier as years have passed but I don't "stress" over it. On a side note, my sister is also a veggie. One "concern" is carrying a child as a veggie. She didn't have a single problem with her pregnancy. She gave birth to a healthy 8lb 11oz girl. That right there should say something.
I wouldn't be too concerned. It will be difficult at first. Trust me, I'm now with someone who is allergic to legumes-imagine the difficulties there-but it can work. There are many simple ways to alter the recipes you love and make it work for meat and non-meat eaters. My biggest piece of advice: Support! It took me a few years to get the support from my parents. It may be a phase but it could also be a life changing decision. Good luck!
Re: Pet Rock Festival
ps
Becoming vegan is very different than a lacto-ovo(which is what I am).
Vegans do not consume ANYTHING that comes from an animal(dairy, eggs, etc). There are many ingredients that contain animal bi-products that most are not aware of. Altoids, for example. They contain gelatin which comes from an animal. As do starbursts, skittles, jello, some puddings, dips etc. While I fully support vegans(and wish I could be one myself), it is a very difficult lifestyle to achieve without dedication. I do consume dairy and eggs but make sure to purchase eggs from a cage free, veggie fed farm(or my sis' fresh eggs) and my dairy comes from Organic Valley(a cow-friendly company). I've often thought of becoming vegan but it is such a strict diet, I don't think I can make it happen. Again, good luck. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I can also send some of my recipes:)

Snarky comment aside, he is correct.
But, people make their choices so they should be as healthy as possible under their chosen lifestyle. It is extremely important for growing children/young adults to get all the nutrients they need to be healthy.

I could not attend, but I was so happy that the weather situation panned out. The organizers really put a lot of heart and soul into this, and it sounds like it was a great day. Congrats!
Re: Pet Rock Festival
Are you saying this dog isn't awww inspiring??? I'm hurt :)
Re: Pet Rock Festival
He didn't post any of the pictures I took. He thinks I'm bad with the camera...which I totally disagree, look how cute bruin is.
Re: Pet Rock Festival
I'm a bozo, I totally blew it, for some reason, I got all the images mixed up!
Sry.
Re: Pet Rock Festival
I kid, I kid.
Believe me, people often comment on how odd Bruin sometimes looks.... one old lady crossed herself when she noticed the mismatched eyes.
Re: Pet Rock Festival
I have a total soft spot for dogs with mismatched eyes.
Re: Pet Rock Festival
Bruin and I need to hang out some time and compare notes.
Re: Pet Rock Festival
On Jim's question about 12 year old. I decided at a young age to not eat meat, still at seafood until I was about 13. It was hard then because my mother left it up to me to make my meals and the only place in the town that sold vegetarian friendly food was expensive and limited. Limited because that was 15 years ago and Garden Burgers and Boca's did not exist. I think today it is much easier to make the conversion. With so many mock meats that are high in protein. I do not believe that anyones needs to drink milk and you can get calcium from other means. I love soy milk, rice milk, almond milk. But Gigi's idea of "center of the plate foods" I have my freezer stocked with veggie crumble and fake chicken, cause it makes it easy when on a time strain.
Also I have Vegan With Vengance cookbook also and there is some great receipes in there. But I know in the vegan/vegetarian cookbook section of Barnes that there is at least 15 books dedicated to children and teenagers that want to make the switch. They help teens learn how to eat well and it is easy that they can do it themselves also. But as a teenage vegetarian I was eating things that were not that great for me only because of limited choices, now it is sooooo easy to be meat free. A total of 17 years of my life as a vegetarian, trying hard as hell to give up cheese (I try). Beans are a big staple in my diet...I think my diet consist of way to much fiber but all is good.
I think it is awesome that your daughter wants to eat healthier for her and the planet. Let her try it out, some stick with it and some do not. But I think with very much open minded parents all will work out wonderfully.

It would be worth your time and money to visit a registered dietitian. (I am a retired one). Your local hospital has outpatient dietitians and you can also find one in private practice through the ADA website:
www.eatright.org
"find a nutrition professional":
http://www.eatright.org/cps/rde/xchg/ada/hs.xsl/home_4874_ENU_HTML.htm
The Vegetarian Resource Group has wonderful articles and recipes; they put out a journal (Vegetarian Journal) and it is all online:
http://www.vrg.org
Raw milk is NOT safe! take a look at the BarfBlog (Kansas State University): http://barfblog.foodsafety.ksu.edu
especially the section on unpasteurized (milk, juice, cider).
Finally, rice milk and almond milk are NOT equivalent to cows milk; soy milk is.
