I picked three: Black Mountain, MGMT (my album of the year so far) and The Black Keys.
Just got the new Portishead, Wolf Parade and Coldplay. DCFC is OK. There are a few good songs on there. I also have The Raveonettes and The Raconteurs. Both are good listens but nothing really grabbed me about either.
Two albums I would have voted for is M83 - Saturdays=Youth and Gutter Twins - Saturnalia.
Finally, I also do NOT get the love for Vampire Weekend then again I'm not very hip either.
2008- not blowing me away so far...looking forward to The Hold Steady's new disc next month. Kings of Leon have another one due out in September, hoping that it's better than their last.
Beck's new disc, produced by Danger Mouse seems interesting, but the first single is a bit of a drag.
Surprised Mark Ronson's "Version" isn't on the list...that's some good shit yo.
Is the New Pornographers Cd from this year? I've been getting more and more into it. It has the best pop production with it's small to big builds yest the songs are great and interesting! There's my vote correct year or not!
This is a threadjack in two ways--the album's not on the list, and it came out last year.
BUT I just have to say that you should give Susan Werner's The Gospel Truth a chance. A singer-songwriter from Chicago, in the folk tradition, this CD is a complete set of tunes about the failures and limitations of organized religion--but done in gospel style, with choirs and big organ sounds backing up these great folk songs. It's an amazing performance. The lyrics are phenomenal as well. Spoken to an evangelical threatening hellfire on her: "If God is great and God is good, why is your heaven so small?"
Anyway, she's giving a show at the Botanical Hill Gardens later this month, and I am very excited about it.

I listened to four of the Ruby Suns songs off the new album and I didn't hear it. I think Vampire Weekend is just trying to write fun songs that happen to have a bit of a world music influence. That Ruby Suns stuff sounds amazing but it also sounds way way way more serious than the stuff Vampire Weekend is doing.
Ya, Those albums that take a while to get used to always end up being the best! Sorry about the wrong year, at least I'm in the right decade! That's good for me.
Re: NPRs Best CD of the Year (so far) poll
Wow, I only have three of those. I have only bought 11 new releases in 2008 so far. I am very behind.
I am very surprised at the landslide response for Vampire Weekend. Wow.
Re: NPRs Best CD of the Year (so far) poll
that vampire weekend record was a quirky listen but i found it completely disposable.
my pick of the year so far, by far:
the whigs - mission control
outstanding start to finish.
young athens, ga trio with a kick ass rhythm section and awesome songs.

No place for a write-in?
The best of the year, "No Ceiling" by Haale, didn't make the list... But by all means, folks, google her and check it out.

Panic at the Disco winning by a landslide...who knew.
I really try to hate that "9 in the Afternoon" single, but I can't...God damn catchy.

Is the New Pornographers Cd from this year?
Nope. Challengers is from last year. That one took some warming up to but I like it a lot. Myriad Harbor is a great song.
