What do you consider a good jukebox?

duncan's picture

I was just reading What Comets, Stars and Moons are All About and he asked the question "What do you consider a good jukebox?" and it got me thinking about it. I like blasts from the past, obscure classics, hard to find songs and I really like soundtracks. Soundtracks always seem to have alternate versions of songs and previously unreleased tracks on them.

What do you like in a Jukebox?

I'm pretty much with Duncan on this one. I appreciate a jukebox that has a really great mix. Stuff that is just left of obvious, stuff you've meybe heard of and was curious about, and would want to invest the quarter on...soundtracks, yes. local flayva, yes. old classic favorites that don't make you cringe when it comes on...yes yes yes. Any jukebox, that left to its own devices won't deliver a clunker.

to expand: I know what I define as "left of obvious" can be someone else's commonplace so it's all subjective but yes, the Vincent's jukebox is a winner. I have not perused Ralph's in some time, but always liked what was spinnin.

Re: What do you consider a good jukebox?

My cheating answer is Itunes. My Itunes is loaded with all of my favorites and some stuff I liked but never gave full attention, so I get a good random mix of songs I love, and songs I forgot about, and songs I never paid attention to that make me want to check out who it is.

I love Vincent's jukebox. I've checked it out a few times when I heard a song I liked to see what it was. (turns out it's always PJ Harvey...)

There was this bar in NYC that I went to once that had an incredible jukebox...so random, and full of great deep cuts (I remember hearing "City Drops Into Night" by Jim Carroll there and being blown away.)

I like the familiarity of classic stuff that I like to hear in a bar (certain things fit, others don't: I like to hear the Clash at Ralph's, but I wouldn't listen to them at home. I love the Beach Boys, but I wouldn't want to hear them at Vincent's...) but I love to hear new stuff that I'm unfamiliar with. I find a lot of cool new music that way. I heard Franz Ferdinand at Vincent's for the first time.

I like random old classics too....Billie Holliday, Sinatra, John Coltraine, Ink Spots, etc.

I like it to be colorful background music. Loud aggressive stuff just gives me indigestion. Constant techno pulsing gives me a headache. I like it to be mixed up.

My first reaction, before even reading the thread was "Any jukebox w/ Built to Spill is a good one."

I open up the thread and find it stemmed from a blog called "What Comets Stars and Moons Are All About." Unless there's another reference I'm not familiar with, that's a line from a Built to Spill song.

I don't think your band is very good.

because it has a lot of stuff i like. variety.

also forgot, vincents is pretty cool as well, but ralphs is definitely the favorite.

basically any jukebox that doesn't have the Eagles on it is probably going to be good.

Right on. Or anything that has "Magic Carpet Ride," but NOT "Born to be Wild."

Yup, any jukebox without the obligatory top 25 songs you'd hear at any wedding reception (Bob Seger to Billy Idol to THAT AC/DC song) is already a step in the right direction.

Half my paycheck went in to the jts pub juke box during my shifts. There is nothing like having a bad day and walking in to a bar and hearing all your favorite songs one after the other.IMO when it comes to juke boxes you cant go wrong with van morrison, black eyed peas, the roots, jew, oasis, ramones, the stones, beatles, rancid, zeppelin, misfits, the smiths, weezer, brand new, the clash, sublime, the cure, social d, saves the day, get up kids, hot hot heat, morrissey, billy holiday, bob dylan, and some prince to keep linnea happy ;-)
