it looks cool but i'd never want to record with it, with those strips of wood crossing right over where the center cap of the speaker would be. that's always been the sweet spot to point an SM57. you might want to move them to the sides if possible while it's still under construction?
Tintern, as per our discussion (fleshed out a tad here to quell any concerns with the future recipient) the picture is a tad deceiving...the strips of wood only cover 50% of the dust cover and beyond that, are designed so that you can mic just about any active area on the cone...it was intentionally designed for a balance of function and aesthetics...there was a look to be achieved, and this is where I could take it without going overboard...
The backs of all those strips are radiused in effort to minimise any unwanted reflections that may impede tone (I work for a world reknown speaker company, and I like to ask questions...)
I finished the grille last night, installed the handles, feet, and generally made it purtier....
I'll post some pics later. Thanks for all your thoughts.
this is it...last pic I will post of it, unless something new happens. She is done save for getting some alnico blues for it and touching up a couple areas like the speaker cable input that I just drilled out.
Thank you to everyone that helped me with this project...especially Roger, Scott, and Ron. I hope to be making a couple more of these for sale...including my next one which will have the voicing of the 18watt on one channel and a matchless spitfire on the other. First, I need to recoup from this project a bit though and get back to actually playing through it :)
If any of you need a cab, I can't recommend Ron enough...as you can see, I am very picky about the way my stuff comes out, Ron was very patient and genuinly enthusiastic about the project...I think we traded emails for about 3 weeks before we even settled on a design.
I'm glad you like it...it's like NOTHING I've ever built before...a real mutual brainstorm. I'm pleased with how it came out, and your finish is beautiful, and matches really nicely. I can't thank you enough for coming to me, and me helping you realise your ideas...
Thing is, that's really why I want to do this. I could care less to ever make another clone piece, I'm really all about the fresh, inspired new / radical / conceptual pieces. Keith made an excellent looking / sounding amp, and it deserved a cab to match.
I'll try and make anything anyone is looking for, but strive for the "different".
May you have years of enjoyment with it. Have you wired it up yet? I'm dying to hear it....
