When I was approached by Volcano Boy to write these one song reviews, I made a promise to myself to not hold back; to be as honest as possible. So here it goes.
Better and Better by Lisa Lawrence needs to get just that. Harmonically and instrumentally, this song is just fine. I really like the synth accents that really make the song jump at you when you first listen. Melodically and vocally, this songs suffers. Performance problems abound as Ms. Lawrence struggles to keep up rhythmically and her pitch is all over the place. The chorus, what should be the main hook of this song, is nearly stifled by the singers inability to catch her breath and stay in time.
Looking beyond the performance, this song still does little for me. Ms. Lawrence is trying her damnedest to cram in as many syllables as possible into three minutes. This causes the melody to lose it's arch, it's bite. The song becomes a jumbled ramble that loses sight of its original intent.
There is a good base here and some good ideas, but the overzealous Ms. Lawrence took this songs a few steps too far. With some reigning in, her songwriting could develop nicely.

Re: Better and Better by Lisa Lawrence
Thats a shame. I really was hooked at the beginning but found the song to be exhausting. I just kept waiting for a break...kind of like if 'its the end of the world as we know it' (REM) never had a chorus.
There seemed to be some sort of bridge towards the end, but it was too little too late. I think if the chorus where reworked to give the song some drama it could still be good.
The vocal calisthenics do seem to be out of place, like a poorly timed drum fill.
This is all in stark contrast to a song she submitted for the noiseboard podcast I did. Her song 6 Bucks is light and airy with almost a bit too much breathing room in areas, but a lot better put together.
I hope she does go back and fix this one up a bit, I think it does have potential.

Re: Better and Better by Lisa Lawrence
You know, I wrote a long sort-of review last week and somehow, my computer is saying my dog ate it and my dog is saying that I'm nuts, that it never happened.
I probably am nuts, seeing that my dog talks to me, but I did have some constructive criticism. I'll see if I can't recall what it was....
Something to do with a guitar solo after the bridge as well as thinking the synth track sounded out of place without some sort of processed sonic buddy in the track to make it not sound like the redheaded stepchild amongst the more trad. instrumentation of the acoustic guitars, bass and drums. I also suggested a live drum track to help make it sound a little more like a live band as a rhythm section.
I thought the song was fun and to the point (though, yeah, a little wordy in spaces, which is one of the symptoms of "singer/songwriter" disease, which Yeti suffers from as well, though he's been working on it and shows promise.) Having a live rhythm track with a little tasteful guitar textures/lines running through would be an appropriate way to pepper up the mix.
I like Lisa's voice, and the song has an uplifting spirit that I can attest, is harder to write than a dirgy downer.
I think I used to go to school with a kid named Dirgy Downer. I would have to check my 6th grade yearbook, but I think he sat behind my pal, Gozzy Hayes).
Besides a couple forgivable pitch deviations, I think it's a good sounding track. Maybe you might want to exploit the adrenaline that a song like "Good Lovin'" by the Rascals (which the prechorus has a lot in common with) has, which I can bet Lawrence's live show might have a little more of. I also wanted to mention that I spied the same intro on Sammy Hagar's "I Can't Drive 55". He probably doesn't need it anymore, so it's all your's now!
I'll check out Lisa's site, as this is the first I heard of her. That's another great reason why Volcanoboy can rock like a hurricane.

Hi Roger,
I'm pretty new to Worcester...just trying to play some shows around here (which I'm finding a little tricky). However, if you ever come to hear me play live I promise to do my best to Rock you like a hurricane :-) LL
