I loved that station when I was in high school... it was great; too bad the reception was so flimsy around Worcester. Of course, that was like, 12 years ago, and I have no idea what they've been playing since then, but I still heard a lot of good tunes, thanks to them.
It used to be they were really cutting edge, playing a lot of college rock...now, I don't notice the difference between them and every other station out there.
I had always thought they were a college station though.
two Brown students started the station in the 30's. It was never owned by Brown U.
I remember hearing 'BRU for the first time when I was about 14 and thinking it was the greatest thing I had ever heard. I would stay up all night listening to the Sugarcubes, Siouxsie, Depeche Mode, They Might Be Giants, XTC and tons of other music I had never heard before. It was a complete musical awakening. Then over the years they abandoned the music I loved for the harder, more mainstream "alternative" stuff, and I stopped listening as much.
We did an interview up there and I had the chance to poke through the 7" archive they had and found an amazing copy of a very early Throwing Muses release, in the original photocopied sleeve, hand draw by Dave the drummer I think. They let me copy it on to cassette. I wonder if they have any of that great vinyl still? I seem to recall them having a yard sale or something like that a few years ago. Anyone know?
I fell asleep listening to WBRU once, back in high school, and I woke up to Dead Can Dance's 'Ubiquitious Mr. Lovegrove.' I was in and out of consciousness, and the song seemed to last about two hours. It was very surreal. It was stuck in my head for about two weeks and I've been a fan of DCD ever since.
So apparently most of you started listening to it before I was even born. I had no idea it had been around that long.
I have noticed that even in the years that I've been listening to it, it's been dying. For example, on random days for a few hours they'll play all rap and hip hop.
I listened to BRU during it's "last hour" and was convinced it had to be an April Fool's joke due to the DJs "not knowing" what was gonna happen at 5, and them still playing commercials. I was convinced when I turned it on again at like 6:30 and the were playing WHAM.
I was relieved when they fessed up
Losing that station would be like me losing one of my eyeballs. Devastating

Re: WBRU for Sale
This whole story was an April Fools Day Hoax BTW.
I know What I Like And I Like What I Know
Re: WBRU for Sale
BASTARDS!!!!
but is it fair to do an April fools prank in March?
Re: WBRU for Sale
No. It's cheating. The trick with an April Fool's joke is to come up with something so believable that people can actually forget it's THAT day. :P
