Downhill Battle has launched yet another site.
iTunes per iPod points out that with 60 million songs sold via iTunes and 2.9 million iPods sold that it works out to only 21 songs per ipod purchased through iTunes. Luckily they do mention that many people buy iPods and other mp3 players and rip music from their own CDs. It is an interesting statistic however I don't feel it has much resonance with people who are simply using MP3 players to consolidate their CD collection and not use file sharing to acquire their MP3s. I do like the Voluntary Collective Licensing plan that they are pushing.
Everyone can win
Since sharing music seems like it's here to stay, why not just legalize it in such a way that musicians and labels get paid? Voluntary Collective Licensing (VCL) is a proposal for a simple and practical system where you pay a flat fee for "all-you-can-eat" downloads and the money gets divided up to musicians and labels according to popularity. It would only cost you $5 a month, and unlike pay-per-song stores like iTunes (which take 35% of each sale) all of that money would go directly to musicians and record labels.
