Lusting Kay and Guilford Ralphs 6/4/05

Ralph

I have seen Lusting Kay a few times and can honestly say that this was the best they ever sounded. I have seen great improvement over the last few months and it seems like they are only going to get better. They already have a loyal following of fans that will only grow if the band continues to progress musically.

Next up was Guilford, led by Greg Olson, formerly of the pop/punk band Puddle. Guilford as a three piece are a tight group of musicians that take the best things from bands like

I also thought that it was the best that I had heard Lusting Kay sound. What I would love to see with them is a little more abandon. I don't mean smash your gear and scream and yell but there is a sense of reserve with you guys. I don't know if it is a musical confidence or if you just are naturally reserved. What made bands like REM so great in their heyday was that they were a folky pop band with regular guys in it but they made the floor shake and they had a party with every show. Strangely the more famous they got the more they lost that element, and look at them now.

Don't force it but don't be afraid to lose control and play with abandon, it would suit the music well.

Good job though LK, I hope to see you again soon.

Barry,
I hope you do more of these... this is good stuff. I dont think I've ever met you, but I would love for you to keep this up. This should keep all of us on our toes.

YA BARRY...WHAT BAND HAVE YOU EVER BEEN IN, HUH!? :-)

Thank you for the review, I think it is an essential part of the 'scene' to have press about it, not only for the bands playing, but also for those going to shows.

I am now going to be one of those guys that addesses the critique (man I hate those people). Michael had all of about 10 minutes warning that he was going to do bulldog with us...it was one of those HEY I HAVE AN IDEA things while I was eating my burger :) Thanks to him for coming up.

The new song (Broken Down)...whiney emo bullshit like what is on the radio? SWEET! I have been really looking for a song we can sell out with :)

I will just skip over train wreck, I remember Matt dropping the beat on one of our songs...that must have been it :)

Now onto Duncan. We are a pretty reserved band by nature...part of that stems from us trying to work on our back up vox more. The other part is trying to strike a balance between not making mistakes and being more exciting to watch. I get very nervous as a 3 piece that if I make a mistake it will bring the entire song to a crashing disaster. I am hoping to add the 'buffer' of a second guitar soon :)

I really appreciate all of you being there, it meant a lot to me to see people in bands I respect in the audience. It means even more to me that you took the time for some constructive critisism and did not throw any rotten fruit in our direction :)

Re: Lusting Kay and Guilford Ralphs 6/4/05

as I read and re-read this review, I am getting more and more angry.

THERE IS NOTHING IN THERE ABOUT HOW HOTTT ELI IS!

and that is just wrong.

I hope due corrections will be made.

Barry,

Thanks for the review and kind words. I thought (honestly) that all the bands played well and was pleased to be part of the bill.

For those who missed SwimTeam, they were real good. Sporting dual Telecasters and dual vocals. Kind of angular...
