Barry on Mars, Palladium 5/9/05

The Mars Volta have been lumped in with a variety of musical genres.
I have heard them called alternative, acid rock, emo, progressive, space rock, and someone even compared them to Led Zeppelin. I have seen some of the best, most talented musicians that ever lived and have seen many different styles

There were seven people on stage that made music that captivated and enthralled me for two solid hours. Cedric bixler-zavala had the stage presence and moves of a vintage Roger Daltery or Robert Plant when he chose to take the center stage. He stood off to the side for most of the show, using his voice as an instrument that overlapped Omar Rodriguez-Lopez

ya i checked out there studio stuff out of sheer interest (noticed lot of hype for tickets on the craigslist ticket board)...

rediculously tight rythym section... very trippy stuff too.

its like, if your gonna break some ground, you might as well go WWWAAYYY out there and break some serious fucking ground... these guys go far out enough to be just a little too much. (kinda like watching john medeski...) it almost makes you cringe for a second.

i was very impressed from what was obviously a live studio recording. im upset i missed this show.

"what?"

Glad you like it. Check out Porcupine Tree if you have the chance. They will be in Somerville this Wednesday...Duncan has described them as "talented".

woaa... talented?
dude theyre rediculous.

ive heard some progressive bands before, but most of them suck... (funny.. rhapsody has them in the category of jam band... i dont necessarily disagree, but this band needs a genre all their own). these guys have a serious nack for showing how well they can play thier instruments. and they mold it perfectly... its like a cross between tool, zep, radiohead, yes and rush(on acid)... except... better.

its also nice to see that THIS is what the kids are digging right now. no offense to anyone one band in particular, but you have to believe that with more availability through the new media outlets / free music via "piracy" etc... bands like this can earn respect and gain success by being able to fucking PLAY.

music based on muscial "talent"??? what a concept... i wonder if the rock world is turning just a bit. if it is its about fucking time.
