Ashlee Simpson returns to live TV tonight in the wake of her Saturday Night Live performance - or lack there of - in which the audience heard and saw Simpson singing the wrong song while she held a microphone at her waist. Simpson is scheduled to perform in Las Vegas tonight at the Radio Music Awards, airing on NBC at 9 p.m. EST.

The Associated Press reports that Simpson's record company, Geffen Records, blamed a computer glitch, saying that instead of some pre-taped electronic percussion for the song "Autobiography," the recording of "Pieces of Me" started by mistake. Simpson then blamed her band for the incident at the end of the NBC comedy/variety show alongside host Jude Law.

"What can I say?" Law said. "Live TV."

"Exactly," Simpson added. "I feel so bad. My band started playing the wrong song. I didn't know what to do so I thought I'd do a hoe-down," she said, explaining the dance she did before exiting the stage after 35 seconds as the network cut to a commercial.

She explained more via a posting on her Web site the next day, saying that her voice was worn out from constant traveling and performing and she needed a tape to augment her vocals. "I can't cancel something like SNL," she said. "You and I know that even if I synched on it or not, I'd still get seen by millions, maybe even make a few more fans. I'll hold my head high and say I think it was silly of me to do it, silly of me to blame the band, I was just so f---ing embarrassed. But I don't think it did me much harm, and people will see that soon."

Simpson had performed "Pieces of Me" earlier in the show without incident. When she returned for her second song, her band started playing and the vocals of "Pieces of Me" could be heard again on tape. The tape has been reported as a "guide vocal" that Simpson was supposed to sing along with if the vocal problems that she had been experiencing with her voice flared up. It's not an uncommon practice on TV, and most who have already seen Ashlee's show on MTV know the 19-year old can indeed sing. Her debut CD has been one of the industry's biggest surprise hits of the year.
