Cheap plug-ins?

MrPEZ's picture

Anyone know of any sites where you can download Pro Tools plug-ins for cheap? There's some dynamics & effects I'd like to have, but they're all in like the $400 to $500 range from Digidesign.

I'm more than willing to pay for downloads, but that seems kinda steep for a "virtual" compressor.

I don't think your band is very good.

Re: Cheap plug-ins?

You should be able to find "evaluation copies" on some P2P sites. If you are looking for legit copies, Roger will probably be able to help you find good deals.

I used the Waves Platinum Collection almost exclusivley and can highly recommend them.

John's old girlfriend is dating some cat who does some kind of product development for Waves. We're egging her to get us some stuff from him.

I have such an irrational fear of P2P sites. I'd definitely do it legit, if I have the choice, but most of that sh*t is just so expensive. I can't possibly justify dropping $400 on a virtual SansAmp, when I only paid $100 for my REAL SansAmp.

Re: Cheap plug-ins?

I also think that plug-ins can be way too expensive sometimes, but you can't compare it to the price of the actual thing.

Look at it this way, if you spent a couple hundred dollars for a virtual Sansamp, you're not just buying ONE sansamp. You're buying as many sansamps as your CPU will allow you to use, and each one of them is entirely automatable.

There are some great sites that have reasonably priced plug-ins that I use all the time.
What software are you using? Protools? Which version and which platform?

Right now, we're making the switch from OS-9 to OSX and we have to buy all new plug-ins. That's a pain, but there are so many benefits to OSX that it's ridiculous. Now that I can integrate VST plug-ins (which are usually MUCH cheaper than RTAS/Audiosuite plug-ins) the world has opened up.

I'll try to get some links for you.

What sorts of plug-ins are you looking for?

I'm a fan of the digitalfishphones plug-ins, which are FREE!

You might also check out Nomadfactory, which are sort of knockoffs of the Bomb Factory stuff. I haven't tried them, but I read good things about them:

http://www.ohmforce.com/ViewCategory.do?category=Bundles
the Ohm Force stuff is reasonable and INCREDIBLE. That stuff does things that nothing else does.

Re: Cheap plug-ins?

Cool, thanks a lot Rog.

Yeah, I was talking to Ted @ Sound Techniques, and had more or less the same point about the pricing. He was saying it's totally worth it for him to spend however much $$$ on a plug-in, rather than the physical hardware, because he can run a Focusrite compressor on every channel, if he wants.

Right now I have a Pro Tools LE/Mbox setup, that I'm running on Windows XP (I think it's LE 6.1, but don't quote me on that). I pretty much bought my computer to be totally dedicated to this stuff.

I'll hafta check out those links. I just need some cooler compressors than the stock Digirack one. I'm completely in love w/ this one specific Bomb Factory job, but the demo's running out in a couple days, and I don't have the $$$ to buy it (after buying the computer, the Mbox, and a MIDI controller, all within the last month).

Re: Cheap plug-ins?

And what's the difference w/ the VST plug-ins? Are those the ones that become a permanent part of the track, or is that something else?

That's something else. VST is just a different type of software plug-in. Speaking for Mac, Protools is only meant to use RTAS (real time audio suite) and Audiosuite plug ins, which is the kind that you have to process the track with.

With OS-X, I have been able to access other types of plug-in much easier. Right now, we're using wrapped VST plug-ins, and powered plug-in via the Universal Audio UAD-1 card, as well as Audio Suite and RTAS.

VST plug ins are mainly known for being used with software like CUBASE. It is a format that I believe was developed by Steinberg. Digidesign is known for using RTAS and Audiosuite and TDM. Then there is Direct-X plug-ins that I'm not familiar with.

With Protools LE, with OS-X, I am now easily using ReWire to get programs like Reason to become an integral part of Protools. I am also running several awesome virtual synths.

By the way, I think that the McDSP http://www.mcdsp.com/ line of plug-in, at whatever cost, is pretty incredible. They're now compatible with Windows XP. Their CompressorBank is one of the most versatile compressors I've used (including the Waves, Focusrite and Bomb Factory stuff) Their FilterBank is an awesome sounding EQ, and their Analog Channel "tape/analog mixer" simulator is also a wonderful tone shaper instead of using compression.

Yeah, Audiosuite must be what I was thinking of.

I don't understand a damn word you just said.

That's something I really need to learn how to do. I don't know jack about ReWire right now, and I'd like to integrate Reason in a better fashion than I've been able to. Right now, they're totally seperate applications for me.

Seriously, though... I'm amazed at what I've been able to pull off in such a short amount of time (I've only had the stuff for about 4 weeks). But at the same time, I feel like a total dunce. I got really good at editing really fast, and I think I have a pretty good ear for levels, but I'm still trying to get a handle on using compressors & effects properly. If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to throw a couple tracks at you for some constructive criticism.

Re: Cheap plug-ins?

Pez, I'd love to hear the stuff you're doing.

As a related side-note, I'm doing some one-on-one Protools training here and there, so if you need some help, let me know.

There are a few good books out there as well as some great forums to pick up hints.

Re: Cheap plug-ins?

Yeah, I've been reading a lot of stuff online lately... But mostly it's been basic recording & mixing techniques, as opposed to anything Pro Tools-specific. I'm still 100% new to all of this.

I still gotta bring you this month's rent, so I'll bring a CD of a few tracks along with it. Shoot me an email, and let me know when you'll be at the studio this week.
