Re: 3rd Networking Mixer March 7 at The Lucky Dog

It was a great time...

the hardest part is meeting new people though...you make all these friends and see them at shows and what not, but when you get to see them with out music blaring in the back ground it is real easy to mix only with people you know.

I would still like to see like an hour dedicated to like a workshop or something. So if you are a band...ok, here are some people who run studios...here are some people who run small labels...here are some people who book clubs, etc.

What was left of the food was excellent, except that Roger and John ate all the drumssticks, and it was really great to meet some new people and pass out some CDs. Also got a good education by Duncan about podcast and some new websites. Great stuff!

def. a good time, thanks again to Duncan and everyone else involved. Didn't make it to the 2nd one but I do like having it at the Lucky Dog do to the large amount of open space available, seems easier to talk to people and meet new faces.

Re: 3rd Networking Mixer March 7 at The Lucky Dog

I too had a good time, lots of familiar faces, met some new people (some aquaintences) and all in all very good. I met Erin who is on the Worcester Board for re-envisionning the city and hope to attend her next round of meetings.

If anyone would like to cull ideas that I could present as a whole going into that, feel free to toss them my way...I give credit where due, obviously.

While it's a great idea to mix people and mix venues for these events, I felt the Dog, while good, could have catered to this a bit more, you know, turn up the lights a tad, make it a little more inviting. The food was tasty, the drinks were great, but it was just kinda too dark in there.

I too would like to see some workshop type things. quick segments. It would help to spotlight certain offerings, and also in a way help to sorta break up "clusters" of people, you know, shift the focus, and promote mingling with new peeps. Obviouslly that is the intent going in, and you make of it what you will, but anything helps.

I like this whole mixxer thing. I have only been to two, and I think they hold alot of promise. Thanks to all involved in putting these events together!

Re: 3rd Networking Mixer March 7 at The Lucky Dog

thanks everyone for going, obviously these are only as good as the people who attend.

Do you think that people would feel that there is an agenda if we did thinks like workshops or focused discussions? My concern is that I don't want to perpetuate or create any sort of hierarchy with these things. A new studio should not be made to feel that they can't talk shop since they aren't an established studio. I don't want anyone to feel left out.

What would you consider the benefits of having these for structured meetings be.

Re: 3rd Networking Mixer March 7 at The Lucky Dog

Well in my case it wouldn't have been such structured meetings as much as just quick spotlights...like possibly on the hour spotlight all the souncompanies representing that night, and then studios...or whatever...

One thing I didn't notice alot of people weraing was the name tags. I walked around looking for new people, and instead of being able to read and quickly discern what they were about, there was a few times an ackward moment of "so, what're you about?" was necessary.

Ain't no thing, but sometimes those that are sheepish could use a little bit of a nudge.

You had asked before about "agenda"...and imo, in this case if kept more on the informal "btw, these are some of the studios representing tonite" tip, I think it'd be cool and casual.

Re: 3rd Networking Mixer March 7 at The Lucky Dog

I think that's a good idea... both of them...

Trying not to establish a heirarchy, but still spotlighting different topics.

It might be cool to have some special guests from time to time that might be able to offer advice, like say an out-of-town music lawyer, or publisher, or a sucessful beat/loop programmer from NYC, or someone who has had a lot of sucess releasing an indie CD in another city that might have advice.

Nothing too structured, but just to say "so and so is here tonight" and people can just talk to them as they mingle.

I agree that nametags are key. Having someone at the door who greets people and tags them immediately is a good idea. The point of these things is to put a face to the name. Like Ron said, I didn't talk to people that didn't have nametags they way I did at the first mixer. I went right up to people, read their tag and said hello.

Also, I felt that it was a little on the "dark" side last night. I would have rather been able to see people better, instead of the "dark rock club" vibe. That might be just me, though.

Re: 3rd Networking Mixer March 7 at The Lucky Dog

Lucky Dog was not the ideal location however Erick is a big supporter of them and we wanted to have one there. It is only not an ideal location because I feel that other booking agents and club owners may feel that there is a turf issue. I prefer restaurants and bars. The next one is at Leo's Ristorante!

I think I understand what you guys are asking for and I think we can come up with something. If not for the next one the one after that.

The nametags, yes they help a lot.

Re: 3rd Networking Mixer March 7 at The Lucky Dog

The wireless network at The Dog was a tremendous asset to the meeting. The Dog, brought out people who really didn't want to go inside SPQR. Some people feel comfortable in certain surroundings, and uncomfortable in others. Its good that we spread these out amongst different venues, cause honestly someone may be more willing to go to Leo's than to the Dog.

Whenever I talk about these meetings the first thing I get is "What am I gonna get out of this?" The meeting is what you make of it. I do feel that some sort of maybe introduction, or maybe even hold one that could allow people to rent tables and display what they got going on.

I sometimes hear, after the event, that a particular person was there, and I didn't get a chance to talk with them. Maybe having people sitting at a table with their stuff would be a little more productive, and easier for folks to "network".

I've made some good contacts because of these, and have become more connected with the Worcester hip hop scene than I've been in 15 years..
