New Reggae?

Jim's picture

Hey all-- I want to get my reggae groove back on, and don't want to have to rely exclusively on my Bob Marley CDs. Can anyone recommend new or current reggae artists that are doing the real thing, and that you love? I'm hoping to find some stuff that won't just leave me nostalgic for sitting around my college dorm room getting stoned. Thanks.

Re: New Reggae?

My favorite new artist is Movado. Also, Buju Banton has a new song "Love Needs" that I've been listening to a lot lately. Listen to Urban Fire Radio on Friday nights from 8pm - 10 pm on WCUW 91.3fm.. It's a great reggae show.

Re: New Reggae?

you might want to check out the show "rockers" on WERS. everynight 7 till 10 (or maybe 12) they play all reggae, lots of new stuff.

personally, i can't stomach it, but it's where i'd go if i was into that stuff.

Re: New Reggae?

Jim, I think you're in for a surprise. Few current reggae artists play the roots variety that Marley played. Most has evolved into a rap/dance hall style, heavy on keyboards and stuff. The traditionalists - like in blues - are mostly whites, who are into the ethnography of the whole thing.

That said, you can lookup old stuff, like Desmond Dekker, Jimmy Cliff, and Toots and the Maytals. Some newer - but not new - reggae includes Black Uhuru and Pato Banton, both of which are excellent. Don't dismiss Marley to your college frat brothers, either. Lots of his best stuff isn't on "Legend." Go to his really early stuff (pre-reggae ska and rock steady), up to about "Catch a Fire," and check out "Uprising" and "Kaya" for great later stuff.

Better yet, I'll make you a mix to get you started.
