2. Tom Petty, Running Down A Dream

3. Kaiser Chiefs, Your Truly,Angry Mob

Re: YOUR Top 5 of '07

Y'know I went to the Paste magazine site to contribute to their 2007 best of poll, but I was so embarrassed how little of the listed stuff I had ever heard. So, instead of rating the handful of discs I'd heard as the best (like the person who fills in the local reader's poll "best coffee" as whatever Dunkin's they hit each morning, though they've never had a cup anywhere else), I closed it.

I'll have to do the same here, though I'd love to read a list of recommendations from y'all!

Re: YOUR Top 5 of '07

It's on my blog but I will post it here as well....

Sloan "Never hear the end of it" Released in the States Jan 2007 it's the best album from begining to end since XTC's Skylarking.

The National "Boxer"
Mistaken for strangers is the best song Joy Division never wrote and it takes balls to end a record with a song like "Gospel"

Maps "We can Create"
Indie Electronica from the one guy in the UK but something about it makes me think of 1993.

Dream Theater "Systematic Chaos"
Continuing to prove that Metallica are a bunch of pussy's. Brilliant Metal (Yes it's on the Prog side). No concept this time, just great songs.

Stars " In our Bedroom After the War"
Is it "Set yourself on fire?" No but it's better than most anything coming out of the states these days.

Coheed and Cambria " Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV Volume 2: No World For Tomorrow"
Okay, this one has a concept. Modern Prog done well. The kids today don't even know that it's Prog, How cool is that?

Arcade Fire "Neon Bible", New Pronographers "Challengers", Feist " The Reminder"
 Because Canada Rocks.

Klaxons "Myths of the near future", Keiser Chiefs " Yours Truly Angry Mob", Arctic Monkeys "Favourite Worst Nightmare"
 The best britpop since 1996.

Spoon "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga"
Saw them on SNL and became a fan. Plus they sound Canadian.

Beruit "The Flying Club cup"

Even I need to listen to good mellow music every now and then and for some reason, especially on "In the Mausoleum", they remind me of Talking Heads.

Most overrated release of the year….

I am going with Radiohead  "In Rainbows" just edging out Peter Bjorn & John "Writer's Block"

Catchiest pop song of the year that is not by Sloan….The Apples In Stereo "Energy". Remember when they played Ralph's in 1995? Ya, I booked that.

Best Local Release of 2007…. Hey Now Morris Fader "Bang the Bass, Turn Up the Treble"

 And just for fun,

DSLR of the year, Olympus E3

Point and shoot of the year, Panasonic FX55

Consumer HD camcorder of the year, Canon HV20

Re: YOUR Top 5 of '07

I've been digging The Boxer and Sky Blue Sky, too.
Nobody's enjoying BAGIA by The Hold Steady, or Black Keys' Rubber Factory?

Funny, about nine months ago we were all trying to figure out if we liked Sky Blue Sky, now it's on a number of our best of lists. What happened? I actually think that I like it less than I did six months ago, whereas some of their earlier CDs have seen no tiring in my mind.

Ooops, sorry. I'm almost never aware these days when a piece of music comes out, only when it's placed in my hands.

Re: YOUR Top 5 of '07

last.fm which is so damn cool btw, should incorporate a better way to create statistics from their data. It's conceivable that I could tell it to give me what I listened to most over the past year that was released over the past year but I can't.

that said, if you aren't using last.fm and you like nerdy things and music you should try it. Using a little bit of software it tracks your music listening and spits back your results. It also leads you towards new music and even has great streaming radio options as well as loads of free mp3s made available by the artists.

here is my page http://www.last.fm/user/mussburger/

last.fm tracks any time I am listening in iTunes or my iPod or iPhone. What it doesn't track is when I am listening to CDs and streaming mp3s to my stereo, so it isn't entirely accurate, but it's pretty cool to see the results.

I have no problem whatsoever saying my favorite release of last year was the Bean Pickers Union cd.
