OK, so the other day a few of us seemed to agree that the Barenaked Ladies drove us nuts. But--in anticipation of the ipod I think my wife is getting me for Xmas--I have been loading every CD I own onto my computer, and today I came across the song "Happy Birthday to Me" by Cracker. Now that's a great song with a sense of humor: "I remember you--you drive like a PTA mother," and so on. Made me start to wonder about this--are there examples of great songs or artists who do have a good sense of humor? I other words, who are great writers/musicians, but also are willing to joke around and not take themselves too seriously? Here are a few isolated examples:
1) "Punk Rock Girl," by the Dead Milkmen. "If you're store don't got no Mojo Nixon, then it could use some fixin." I don't know if they're great--I only know this one song, so maybe this doesn't fit.
2) "Rocking the Suburbs," by Ben Folds. I know it's easy to make fun of white kids trying to do hip-hop, but that song's still pretty funny. Folds in general has a good sense of humor, but can also write great songs.
3) "Jimmy Jazz," by The Clash. "Uhhhhhh . . . he was here . . . but . . . uh . . . he went out!"
4) Warren Zevon, see all. And if you don't think Zevon can also write a brilliant serious song, listen to "The Vast Indifference of Heaven," or the song he wrote just before he died: "Keep Me In Your Heart."
5) God, Lloyd Cole and the Commotions just came up in the pile--anyone remember him? He's got a line in one of these songs that has always struck me as hilarious: "Spin, spin, whiskey and gin, I suffer for my art, bartender." Don't we all.
So lighten up our day a little--who else is great and has a great sense of humor?

Re: Great Songs with a Sense of Humor
Just in the spirit of discussion and enlightenment, what separates They Might Be Giants from Barenaked Ladies? I like TMBG much better than BNL, but am not sure I could say why.
Re: Great Songs with a Sense of Humor
BNL's first couple of albums had some quality stuff. They just chose to go in a direction that every song had to be a joke. Good for them I guess. They lsot me on "chikety china the chinese chicken......" I saw Frank Black open up for TMBG at Smith college (95?) Great show.
Re: Great Songs with a Sense of Humor
Just because I am so familiar with them, The Who come to mind.
"Tattoo"
"Mary Anne With The Shaky Hand"
"I'm A Boy"
"A Quick One (While He's Away)"
"Odorono"
"Boris The Spider"
"Whiskey Man"
"Dogs"
"Now I'm A Farmer"
"Squeeze Box"
etc.
Ben Folds has a ton of great ones.
It's a boy Mrs. Walker, it's a boy...
Re: Great Songs with a Sense of Humor
"...and I'll be diggin, diggin, diggin."
Love those Who tunes. Add Entwistle's "Success Story."
I saw BNL on a bill with Guster. There are two other bands, Jim, that one could easily lump together. That night, though, to me, they couldn't have been from two more different worlds.
Guster to me is clever and deeper than it first looks, with, yes, lots of little frat house jokes. BNL is just cutesy shenanigans that make it impossible for me ever to get to listening to the songs.
So, the difference between BNL and TMBG? Maybe its that TMBG challenge you a bit more, and offer more of an absurdist artist's view than BNL, who seem like guys who've been roommates too long.
Re: Great Songs with a Sense of Humor
Me again.
I don't want to forget The Who's "Cobwebs and Strange" and "Boris the Spider."
And "Bell Boy" could be kind of funny, if it weren't also heart wrenching and tragic. Check out the rare live version on "30 Years of Maximum RnB." Moon's tragi-comic personality reduces me to tears.
