I saw some band last night called Van Halen last night...not too bad for a couple of old dudes...and some pudgy kid.
Frankly, I've never been much of a VH fan and I went last night purely based on curosity.
The band was in top shape, musically and physically (David Lee Roth looking lean and mean in comparison to the DLR version displayed at the Palladium disaster a few years back)----but the whole show felt forced. Forced smiles, forced on stage antics. Very desperate. It came off as more of a theater production, actors merely playing their parts with a hefty paycheck waiting for them in their dressing room.
I missed Michael Anthony. Yeah, Wolfgang could play but how many Van Halens is too many Van Halens?
VH is smart though--5 years from now, Michael Anthony will be back in the fold and they'll relaunch the whole "reunion" concept again...maybe they'll even bring Sammy out as well.
Re: Van Halen....?
I'll say again that Van Halen on the 1984 tour was the worst musical experience of my life. I laughed through the whole heavy metal vaudeville show. The joke DLR made about "big things" in Worcester after a bra flew from the crowd was bad enough, until I read a review of another night when - imagine the coincidence - it happened in another city.
The other worsts were ZZ Top on their Eliminator tour, and Aerosmith on their Done With Mirrors tour. I'll never forget Joey Kramer playing the snare with his head during the solo. To make matters even more ridiculous, he was faking it by hitting the bass pedal. Overall, it was the worst concert sound I had ever heard.

Re: Van Halen....?
I saw Van Halen or Sammy Hagar by accident when I was living in Missoula, Montana. They have these huge outdoor concerts in the city center by the river underneath a bridge. I watched from the bridge.
Sammy Hagar was talking about how he was "stickin' it to the man" by switching up the song order demanded by his music management company. Pretty amusing. However, I secretly enjoyed hearing "Why Can't This Be Love" echoing off the mountains.
