TODAY, Tuesday November 6th is Election Day in Worcester. It's a highly competitive election, and it's extremely important that we all get out there and vote. You can read about all of the candidates here: http://www.telegram.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?category=ELECTION However, I am going to implore you to vote for Grace Ross for at-large City Council: http://www.grace4worcester.org
I've gotten to know Grace Ross over the last several months, and she inspires me to hope for and work for a better city. She listens to everyone, and has creative, practical, and sustainable solutions for our challenges. She loves Worcester, and she's not stuck in a defeatist Worcester mentality. She's exactly what we need on the Council, and she needs us voters' help her get there.
I've been pretty active in the community, had a bunch of politicians on our TV show, and even served them as a waitress. Without naming names, I'm extremely disappointed in most of the incumbent city councillors. I've observed the way they'll deem to speak with a regular person like you or I, while looking over your shoulder for someone more important to talk to...someone who can do them more favors. A few of them have been on the council for decades. It's almost enough to turn you off from city politics - but that's exactly what they want. We don't vote, they stay in power.
I'm happy to support Grace Ross because she's not like that. She's totally approachable, and she's not part of the old boys' network who is content doing things the way they have always been done. Give her a chance, and I believe she'll come through for us.
So I hope you'll join me in electing Grace to the city council. Voting only takes a few minutes. True American heroes (probably even men and women in your family) have fought and died for our freedoms. Please exercise one tomorrow and vote.
If you don't know where to vote, go to http://www.ci.worcester.ma.us/ and click on "Where do I vote?" on the right-hand side. I have other election opinions if you're interested ;)
Thanks,
Shannon

And if it's the kind of thing you're into, we're covering the election with a little mobile blogging from around town today.

Re: Voting Day Today! Use your voice
Voted this morning around 10am at the apartment tower across from Ed Hyder's. There were three or four other voters in there, more than I expected to see.
Re: Voting Day Today! Use your voice
Also--kudos to WoMag for liveblogging the polling places.
Re: Voting Day Today! Use your voice
The Channel 3 news last night reported voter turnout of about 20%. The scariest part is that it's thought to be a good turnout.

Re: Voting Day Today! Use your voice
Well done. The T&G has always maintained an unabashed conservative bias. It was reputed in the 1990's that they consciously underreported city crime because they opposed increases in police. Just read their editorials and the laughable cartoons by Hitch and you'll see it clearly.
They'd never tolerate a progressive like Ross. Their line is always minimize, minimize, cut taxes, cut taxes. We've got to pay for services somehow.
Re: Voting Day Today! Use your voice
Re: T&G error--Looks like they just switched the names on the Ross/Irish/Coleman columns. They did this both on the huge table of results on the inside and on the front page of the local section. The upshot is that it made Ross look like the big loser, when in fact she did better than 3 challengers and 1 incumbent. I don't know if this is a "conspiracy" or not.
OTOH, if you are a local paper, the core thing you're providing is reporting on local police, politics, and sports, which involves getting lots of boring details right day after day. I don't follow local police or sports matters very closely, but I do follow politics, and after seeing how easily they've screwed these details up, I'll be much less trusting of their details on other matters.
Many props to Scott Zoback for his blogging-via cellphone yesterday. I didn't get anything useful from the T&G website that I didn't get from WoMag first.
Re: Voting Day Today! Use your voice
And Zoback was very helpful in his up-to-the-minute reporting with Andy Lacombe, too.
Good stuff!
Re: Voting Day Today! Use your voice
Thanks all for the props to WoMag for Tuesday.
Rick Rushton just called for a full recount by hand...details at the site: http://worcesterelections.wordpress.com/

Note that Vocero also printed the wrong election results, a la the Telegram & Gazette:
