Paste Magazine pay what you want

duncan's picture

the great music mag Paste is letting you pay what you want for a years subscription (as little as a $1). I love this magazine and if you're music fan you should check it out, the free cds each month are always full of good stuff and the writing is great.

I think it's a cool promotion for them to be doing this but unlike Radiohead, I don't think people will be paying what they honestly feel the mag is worth. The more subscribers that Paste can say they have the more they charge their advertisers and thus the more money they make. So the difference between paying $20 a year or a $1 a year works out for Paste either way.

I'm not saying you shouldn't pay them $100 for your subscription but I certainly didn't.

I've really enjoyed this mag since its inception, too. The writing is sharp and informed without succumbing to all the blase' irony of Rolling Stone and Harp. The field of taste is fairly narrow, but then so is mine.

I'm in.

One dollar= 11 magazines and CDs.
Best buck I've spent in a while.

Yeah, I've been reading this rag for a few years now, as it filled a void missed by the old CMJ Monthly mag (is it in circulation anymore? I haven't seen it it forever) and touched on alot of my interests/ current listenning habits.  That and I love getting the CD's.  I used to love the DVD that also came with it but alas they moved all that to the website...

I think this is a cool promotion if a tad copycattish, but I paid 5 bucks for the subscription.

I figured 50 cents an issue would be quite a bargain, so I paid $6. Then it turned out to be 11 issues. Which doesn't work out to a whole number at all!

I paid $10 - I don't know why. I felt guilty not paying, even though the only reason I had looked into it was the concept of free. I guess that's why they do it. As Duncan said, they win anyway. As a somewhat new magazine, they're more than likely to go belly up, so why not artificially boost subscriptions?

Another cool opportunity is inradio, a bi-monthly sampler of (really) independent labels and artists. The mixes are really eclectic and international. You get 6 CDs a year for about $20. I figure, even if I don't appreciate all the artists, I like what they stand for. Some artists discussed on this site, like Data Rock and Jenny Young (or something) have been featured. Check itout at: http://www.inradio.net/issues/index.php (don't go to inradio.com.)
