Volcano Boy statistics

Take a look at this site's statistics. I've been hanging around here a lot lately, and I find that many seemingly interesting threads lie dormant and ignored.

When "online" statistics appear, usually it cites four or five people - a member or two, and perhaps a guest - moving about the site. Sometimes there are as many as a dozen or so.

Then, looking at individual thread stats, I notice that most threads receive just a few comments, some, though, get as amny as 130.

Then, I notice the "views" stats. There I see that many - MANY - of the threads have 10, 20, even 30,000 views (30,000!!!!). The sheer amount of lurking is phenomenal.

The other day, we were talking about Sonicbids. Being a newbie to it, I was looking to you hip scenesters to give me the straight dope. Then, out of nowhere, pops a Sonicbids employee, who sets us straight on the official company line. Weird!

William F. Buckley once said that a publisher friend of his said that magazines take letters very seriously, because so few people ever write in to complain or anything. So, three or four letters implies thousands of like minded readers who just don't have the gumption to write in.

I wonder what all these lurkers would say? What gets them here? And do they lurk at our shows, too?

Anybody?

Re: Volcano Boy statistics

Here's what I'm thinking, Matt. There are really just two posters on here--me and you. Everyone else is Duncan. Some days he likes to post, and some days he likes to lurk.

It will be interesting to see which one of his personalities denies this.

It's the government, M~a~n! Watch what you say!

Really, can some of you people identify yourselves?

Imagine where the conversations would go if thousands more people joined in?

Re: Volcano Boy statistics

I'm wondering how many of these thousands of hits on mothballed threads are search bots wandering the site. (Most clever site stat tools filter out those hits, but I know that the inbuilt tools of many open-source CMSes don't distinguish.)

Re: Volcano Boy statistics

I use a few tools to track the traffic on the site, Google analytics being my preference. Bots spidering the sites aside there are a considerable amount of people visiting the site. One of the reasons is that since 2004 I have not pruned a single thread or news story from the site.

Things like Rogers Patchbay and restaurant reviews turn up high on searches as do silly things like Kates hoof and the grape lady. Either way the traffic is growing, there are a lot of new members who are starting to post.

I am am glad that the site is still a somewhat safe place for people to talk about Worcester without personal attacks and harrassment.

Re: Volcano Boy statistics

I hear that. The Telegram ran an editorial of mine yesterday, and last night an old lady called my house to chew me out for my opinion. she called me "stupid" and
"dumbell." Man! I might get shot next.

I'm glad to know that the site is growing. It's a lot of fun. What happened to the "online stats" that used to appear in the left margin?
