We don't have to re-hash the thread about his past cartoons. I just had to post this one, though, to show that his bizarre, "cantankerous old man," conservative ravings weren't a lapse or a fluke.
When I read his comics I am laughing AT him not with him.
His knocks on Worcester and the citizens are lame and tired.
I love how his Vampire is scared to go on Grand St. I live @ The University Park Lofts on Illinois ST right on the bottom of Grand and have had zero issues of any sort. Noise, drugs, vandals, etc.
It's actually pretty quiet down here because it is so desolate.
But yeah the "Action Geek" is all geek and no action IMO.
I tend not to get in a tizzy about most of his comics the way some do (btw...I am guessing thats the goal)...this comic was just not very interesting, humerus, or insightful to me.
I just hate the weekly overly-wordy, badly drawn insult-fest that is Action Geek. I read them, then wish immediately that I hadn't. It's the same feeling I get when I read Family Circus, by far the world's worst comic circle. It's not worthy of being called a strip. But back to Doug and his shitty little self-absorbed trash-on-Worcester cartoon. I can't believe his editor let this one go to press. The pumpkin asking where the PIP is just kills me. Doesn't he realize that not everybody is as perfect as he apparently is and some people need some help? I couple of weekends ago, I went down to check out the first phase in the wayfinding project: the tiled thing in front of the old movie theater. It was really nice (I have many issues with it, but this isn't the place, though please tell me how a 4-sided column with the words Downtown District and tiled pix of Worcester is going to help me find my way? There's no map!). I didn't see any sketchy folks, there was surprisingly little litter, and there was a group of people enjoying the beautiful fall day in that little park area on the triangle. I didn't feel unsafe. I guess, though, that since I grew up in Worcester, and not suburbia, I'm so used to crime and poverty that I don't even notice it.
I especially found the theme of "don't wander the projects after dark" enlightening and insightful.
If only those slum peasants would stop tolerating bad behavior; cartoonists could feel free to stroll though poverty stricken subsidizing housing for their enjoyment when they get the urge.

It's like listening to Nancy Reagan or an evangelist.
Gee Wally, "Why don't the poor just say no, and choose to make Plumley Village Eden, instead of suffering under the crushing forces of poverty?"
"Gee, Beev, I don't know."
Christ! Holden isn't that far from Worcester. Were you raised in a sensory deprivation tank?

Kind of like reading Cathy.

I dont know how he gets aways with these strips. They are completely rediculous.
A painter paints pictures on canvas. But musicians paint their pictures on silence.
