Action Geek Saves the Day

I saw this comic in the september 6th Worcester Magazine and became immediately apopleptic.

Anyone want to have a go on this?

I don't know how to paste in the comic, so here's the link:

Re: Action Geek Saves the Day

Let me clarify: I meant to name the post "Action Geek Saves the Day??????"

Holden isn't far, Doug, and you can go home.

That broad in the bottom left bears a striking resemblance to Stacy, except of course she doesn't let her three year old run around outside unsupervised.

Re: Action Geek Saves the Day

All right, I wanted to see if I was alone in my perception of this comic, and if any of you guys had a thought on it. Since no one seems to, I'll start. A short list of the endless stream of words that came to mind would read
facile
ignorant
bigoted
hasty
whiney
naive
condescending
incorrect
self-aggrandizing
superior
self-righteous
stupid
"asking for a world of pain" as they say in "Big Lebowski"
petulent
showing a complete lack of compassion for others

Anyone care to pick this up?
Am I missing some subtle employment of the "naive" narrator? Is Doug actually a sentient, well-intentioned egalitarian?

Re: Action Geek Saves the Day

This is kind of funny...Normally I'm in total agreement regarding Doug's cartoon. I mean the name alone says enough about a certain level of narcissism. And he certainly has no problem with shitting all over Worcester and it's inhabitants while claiming that it is for the purpose of making it better.

I truly believe that he's just a socially awkward guy. That he doesn't always realize that he's alienating everyone that he wants to like him. That he honestly believes that he's educating; helping people to see that he's the enlightened one in a world full of morons who can help us to the light.

But this time, I agree with him. I don't live on the west side. I live in the newly forming Vernon Hill known as Grafton Hill. And people do all the things he says in the cartoon. His thoughts aren't original to me.

I don't dig his art style, I don't dig his messages, and I don't dig his attitude. But of all the cartoons he's done, this is not the one that I find most irritating.

And yes, I've met him.

All done with nice.

Re: Action Geek Saves the Day

I've met him a few times before, too.

I don't want to get into a personal attack on him. I just think this comic originates from the worst in stereotyping, ignorance, and self importance.

It doesn't matter whether you live on the east or west side, or Holden, for that matter. People are people, and, yes, some have problems. What I see, however (and it is a theme in Chapel's work), is that he is the biggest problem. He always takes the approach that he is an agent for change and justice and good living and we all need simply follow him to the promised land. He is sadly mistaken. Maybe a couple columns should focus on his narrator working on a few of his problems: lack of sympathy and compassion, awareness of social causes that result in less enlightened people than himself, self-absorption, and humility.

Basically, the comic says, "I like to sleep late, and don't wish to be bothered by the antics of you lesser individuals, and your children." Sorry, Doug, get some earplugs, or move where there are few or no people.

Anyone who needs precedent on Doug's character can refer to any of his comic strips or old threads here. Each time he opened his mouth here, whatever his intent, he filled it with his foot and the angry retorts of everybody else on the list. That speaks for itself.

Re: Action Geek Saves the Day

it's my impression that action geek used to be pretty active on this forum. i was only curious if Matt even knew who he was.

being from vernon hill also i can vouch for a few good parents in the neigborhood.

also, I have a hard time believing that in his neighborhood observation he saw only these negative examples. seriously.

just the other day i saw a teenager walking across the bridge over 290 by kelly square. there was a cat on the sidewalk as he was passing by. although he was carrying a bunch of stuff already he picked up the cat and carried it across the street out of harms way. regardless of how this kids parents may or may not have raised him he still knew right from wrong and managed to squeeze in a little kindness as he went about his day.

i believe the majority of parents and kids in this city do not fit into the stereotype that is portrayed in this cartoon.

Re: Action Geek Saves the Day

I'll go on record as to say I just plain hate his comics and commentary.  I don't have anything against him personally, but the ranty, condescendly smarmy everything is so so tired.

Obviously he's forgotten how to be a kid, or just hates kids and because their actions don't fit his schedule, they're hellspawn and the parents are nicely pigeonholed luddites.  Doug,(or anyone, really)  DO you remember being a kid, being up bright and early and just wanting to go outside and play? If you do NOT, I feel really sorry for you. You've given up your youth.  I live this everyday with my kids, and as long as it is a respectable hour, and they are keeping the noise down, then tough shit if you want to sleep til noon...my kids are gonna ride their bikes and have a good time.  Trying to supress youth just for the sake of it is just wrong.

You never hear other kids go "fucking kids... pipe down"...

get my point???

 Amazing.

Do I agree with kids being up til all hours, or whipping trash around? No.  BUt, in light of these rants, I feel "crack of dawn" was more like 9am, and trash all around might as well be a single gum wrapper...I still don't agree with that, but everything is always blown out of proportion in these strips...hey Doug, would you rather the kids be inside all the time playing videogames so your next comic could be about complaining kids are fat and lazy and violent?  Jesus Christ.  You cannot have it both ways, and rarely is everything gonna be YOUR way.  Accept that or find a cave.

unless you've NEVER EVER tossed anything out a window or dropped on the ground, you're no better so pipe down.  What is important as an adult is often negligible to a child.  Doesn't make it right, but that is reality.  That said....

Do I believe there are plenty of hands-off parents out there who don't give a damn or take the time to teach their kids instead relying on school to raise them? Yes. But don't let the actions of a few paint too broad a generalization of the whole. Single these people out and talk to them instead of making nameless rants on a comic strip like a pussy.  But no one wants to talk to anyone anymore, they're just expected to fall in.

I realize my tone on this post makes me sound as ranty as he does, but it's not coming from a place of anger...just putting another perspective onnit.

Re: Action Geek Saves the Day

I have known Doug for a few years, hell at one point we hung out alot, then his elitest attitude became far to much to handle. He has a GF with a 13 year old son and he all of a sudden knows how to raise kids. He is just a month away from another birthday and that much closer to 40. I sent him an email a few comics back about the one making it look like everyone on Main south is horriable and just plain negative attitude. He commented back that thanks for my comment but he thinks about what is writing up. I can tell you most of the time there is nto much thought. I have sat with him at Ralph's a few years ago while he would throw together that weeks strip.
Hre use to be Worcesters biggest promoter now he is just a jaded individual.
