Denny Somach - Cold Cases of Rock and Roll - Led Zeppelin

duncan's picture

Did anyone hear Denny Somach on Howard Stern this morning? The replay is coming up in an hour or so if you missed it. Anyway. He's an encyclopedia of classic rock info and goes through song by song of how Led Zeppelin ripped off a bunch of songs on thier first album. It's really interesting to hear the songs played back to back.

"Case #1

Did Led Zeppelin steal the majority of their songs from other sources?

Over the years Led Zeppelin has been accused of borrowing music and lyrics from other artists, especially some of the greatest blues legends of all time.

Led Zeppelin has been taken to court over the matter on numerous occasions. Several of the cases are yet to be resolved."

It'll never be the same without John.

So this is a Pet Peeve of mine. Is it Led Zeppelin without John? not really, but Jason is an amazing drummer who is every bit as good at his dad so many would argue that at least they didn't put Phil Collins behing the kit and call it Led Zeppelin. If they went on tour I would be happy to see them with Jason and have no problem saying that I saw led Zeppelin. The Who is a different story. Two of four original members not there and calling it the Who to me is like David Gilmore and nick Mason going on tour as Pink Floyd...oh wait.... I just think it's wrong in most cases.

How do you think the world would have reacted to a Beatles world tour in 1984 with Denny laine on guitar and vocals? How about if it was Julian Lennon instead? Lastly, how about if there was a no name guy on guitar and vocals but Billy Preston is there on keys and vocals.

If Lush toured without Chris Acland on drums, would anyone really care?

I would still see them. So on this topic...

I have seen the Band without Robbie Robertson and had no problem with it, the Cure with whoever robert Smith had on stage at the time,

Will never see The Cars without Ben Orr, INXS without Michael Hutchinson or REM without Bill Berry.

I will see the Spice Girls in December because I was too old to see them when they were huge but  think I'm just the right age to see them now. I don't think I would have seen then if Geri wasn't involved however.

Certain members of bands mean a lot to me. I have seen Sting a dozen times and he always does Police songs but seeing Stewart and Andy is why I want to see the reunion so badly. I assume to fans of just Sting they probably don't see the big deal with this reunion.

REM is not REM without Bill Berry, it's some bizarre thing that I don't want to listen to.

I wouldn't see Spice Girls without Gerri.
