Spags will finally be gone

duncan's picture

Spags has been gone a long time but slowly the memory of it has been getting removed as well. The roof was painted, the cool Spags sign was torn down (where is that thing???) and building 19 has totally wrecked the place.

now they are going to tear it down and build a new B19, apartments and stores.

lovely

I had a similar thought as I drove down Park Ave the other day and wondered what happened to that ludicrous thirty-foot high neon's Arby's hat. It was like they bought the sign from an Arby's that closed down in Vegas or something.

i miss that Arby's sign. I miss the Aku Aku sign that never worked too.

I love that plumbing sign on Chandler Street. I can't recall what it is for but it is towards the park ave side after the El Coqui liquor store heading downtown.

Oh and the hardware neon sign on W Boylston street near the pawbroker.

what other great signs are around?

it's sad b-19 couldn't retain the spag's history.  the new sign just looks crappy.

other cool neon signs: the owl shop on main street.

There used to be a great neon years ago at a meat market that used to be next to Bagel Time. It was a side view of a cows head with a cartoon ballon coming out of the couws mouth with "MOO" inside. CLASSIC!

Is that the plumbing sign with the neon drips?

Obviously the mustard-laden Coney Island sign is a classic as well.

Signs from the past, too late for Preservation Worcester:

The all-time classic Cott beverage sign overlooking Lincoln Square till the early 70s. Made the Citgo sign look like a lead pipe.

The Metropolitan Cleaners warrior at the corner of Penn Avenue and Grafton Street, hitting the bullseye. Its motto: We Hit The Spot. White Cleaners had a neon tiger growling up the side of its HQ at Chandler and Bellevue.

Re: Spags will finally be gone

This thread has been hijacked and I don't know what I want to reply to more: how sad it is that the Spag's era is offically over, or how much I love all this talk of classic signage. Scott Ricciuti (of the band Huck) is something of a signmaker himself, and he and I talk about signs we love and miss from time to time. I think he even had something to do with that cool neon hammer hardware store sign on Gold Star Blvd.

Worcester has had some great signs over the years, probably the most famous being the legendary Coney Island sign that I think I will fall into a bottomless pit of sadness if that one ever goes away. Someone should (has?) start a Flickr group for great Worcester County signs.

Besides great large storefront signs with cool neon and art-deco lettering, I always love seeing the faded remnants of painted advertisements on the sides of buildings. I recall an Oldsmobile ad painted on the side of a barn in Charlton. Ron Mominee can probably confirm it, as it was in his old neck of the woods when he worked for a company out there.

Morbid as it is, I still miss seeing the WORCESTER COLD STORAGE sign from 290.

Re: Spags will finally be gone

My grandfather built the old spag's sign and I used to service it, it's too bad Building 19 couldn't somehow work that into their vision, and yeah, I built that hardware sign on West Boylston St. Regarding Roger's comments about the paint on brick, I love the Heywood building ad on Harding St.

There aren't enough painted billboards anymore. I was noticing the old Miller Lite (I think) painting on the back of The Palladium, it's kind of sucky but it's a HUGE painting. It would be so cool if advertisers still did painted billboards.

Re: Spags will finally be gone

Before we see a renaissance in huge painted wall advertisements I think we'll be seeing virtual holographic projections in the sky.

I noticed the faded painted wall sign at the Lucky Dog, on the alley side facing Kelley Square mentioning it being the new location of Sir Morgan's Cove. Made me wonder where it was in the first place.

Re: Spags will finally be gone

That sign at the Lucky Dog was there originally. I talk with Erick about doing stuff with it every now and then but it's pretty expensive.

There is a cool sign that will be going up on the top of the building pretty soon. It's all ready to go just needs to be installed.
