lets go people...nominations and why.

delnieve's picture

Re: Volcano Boy Gluttony Poll (or best worcester food)

Vegetarian: One Love Cafe. Because they have stuff for your non-veg friends too. And because rasta cooking does the vegan thing right.

Cafe: Java Hut. Because they serve espresso in a ceramic cup, and they have a couch.

Diner: Gold Star. Cheap, and getting to the bathroom is a mini-adventure.

Re: Volcano Boy Gluttony Poll (or best worcester food)

If we can't think of a nomination can we just nominated Lusting Kay's Mom? (this works really well in a few categories)

Re: Volcano Boy Gluttony Poll (or best worcester food)

Bang for Buck: A year ago I would have said Eddy's now I'm not sure. Boynton maybe? I have no real opinion on this.

Restaurant to take a date: Even though I have never taken one there I have always found Mac's to be a pretty great atmosphere as far as the romance goes. Haven't been in a few years though.

Breakfast: Eller's On The Hill, hands down. Read my review, you know my reasons.

Cafe/Coffee Shop: Java Hut, to me a cafe is like a bar, it's about atmosphere, you are going to spend some time there, Java Hut has the best in the city, plus, the Hot Chocolate is delicious.

Chinese: Nancy Chang, one of the only Chinese places where I don't feel like a drank a cup of grease when I am done.

Desert: Wholly Cannoli, umm, fucking awesome? How is that for a reason?

Diner: Parkway, the big windows looking out onto Shresbury St do it for me.

HotDogs: Hot Dog Express, because it's the best Hot Dog, not the best sauce that goes on the Hot Dog. Hot Dog express serves the best quality Hot Dogs in town.

Italian: It's close between Wonder Bar and Leo's and I am going to give the edge to Leo's

Mexican: Up until recently Tortilla Sam's had dominated this market. I am still going to go with T Sam's for now until I eat at Joe Murphy's some more. Although Jose Murphy's is pretty awesome.

Pizza: Corner Grille for me. It's perfect pizza. Thin crust, not greasy. Really good.

Seafood: The Sole, haven't been to the new Coral yet.

Steak: Go directly to Fairway Beef, bring steak home, cook it. Pass out over the awesomeness. Seriously. I am done buying steak out.

I am going to offer a big N/A for these last four. The Bacon Cheeseburger Omelet may seem strange to you if you haven't spent the last 30 years of your life fantasizing over such a thing.

Strangest dish
Restaurant of the Suburbs
Sushi
Vegetarian

I am adding categories. A write in if you will.

Best Sandwich: Wholly Cannoli Italian Club

Best Burger: Ralph's (I want someone to come up with something better, I don't even think the Ralph's burger is stupendously good I just think it's the only one that stands apart in the whole city.)

Re: Volcano Boy Gluttony Poll (or best worcester food)

Bang for Buck- Dalat on Park Ave. Great Vietnamese where you can go in with $6 and have a very full meal

Restaurant to take a date- Chioda's on Franklin St. Great Italian place, awesome atmosphere
Breakfast- I'll say the buffet at Maxwell Silvermans. Amazing aray of foods, great omlettes
Cafe/Coffee Shop- Bean Counter. Good coffee. I like that I feel like I am in a real city when I am there.
Chinese- Nancy Chang. There is no other chinese in Worcester that I would eat.
Desert- Holy Canolli. Same reasons as Gabe
Diner- Boulivard. I love the atmosphere, they make a good cheese burger and they have the only red sause that I would eat not in my own house.
HotDogs- I love Coney Island. They are grilled and go great with chocolate milk
Italian- Chioda's. Great selection, great bread and dip, up scale home style
Mexican Torilla Sams, because I have never had any else in Worcester
Pizza- Wonder Bar, simply because it is the best pizza around
Seafood- Again, Chioda's. I know it is not an all out seafood place, but their fish selection is huge and is amazing
Steak- I never eat steak out.
Strangest dish- nothing
Restaurant of the Suburbs - nothing
Sushi- nothing
Vegetarian- nothing

Re: Volcano Boy Gluttony Poll (or best worcester food)

Bang for Buck : Dalat, Park Ave. they could charge twice as much for this food and I would still eat there. Don't tell them that, it's really cheap and the avacado boba is rediculously good. #3, #37 and a #86 please

Restaurant to take a date: Dalat, if they can't appreciate this place, who needs 'em?
Breakfast: Ellers has an excellent breakfast, I long for the days of The Gentle Lentil though. In my opinion there isn't a gourmet breakfast to be had in Worcester that I know of. Ellers gets it for now.
Cafe/Coffee Shop: no such thing in Worcester. They all kind of suck, as far as getting a decent coffee, I am sorry to say that Starbucks wins. Someone tell Bean Counter that hershey syrup does not make a good Mocha
Chinese: Nancy Chang is delicious, lots of variety, nice decor, the food doesn't blow me away but it's pretty good.
Desert: Wholly Cannoli, incredible Cannolis, makes me want one any time I think of that place.
Diner: Boulevard. It's pure Worcester, the decor, the attitude, the giant menu, the mess. Best experierenced at 3AM drunk.
HotDogs: n/a
Italian:  Piccolos, I am not an Italian food expert but I know that I like the food here. It always tastes fresh, the atmosphere is great and I think about the garlic bread and cheese almost daily.
Mexican: Cancun's in Grafton, it tastes fresh, not just the ordinary stuff on the menu, good prices, large portions. They need to work on the atmosphere and dim those bright lights but it's pretty tasty food.

Pizza: Pop's in Tatnuck Sq. (sorry Wonder Bar) I am torn on this one but lately if I am choosing I am choosing Pop's. Giant NYC style pizza, tons of flavor in the cheese, hand tossed, not greasy, it's perfect Pizza. I really love the WB too, but give the new guys a chance.

Seafood: The Sole - this is the place I go most often, it never lets me down (well once but that's not bad), they have a huge variety of food. all I can really say is Tuna Barcelona, I love you.
Steak: n/a
Strangest dish: I dont like this category
Restaurant of the Suburbs: Cedar Street in Sturbridge. Drive there, it's worth it. The food is SPECTACULAR. I can't think of anything in Worcester that is in this league.
Sushi: So many new choices, I haven't had them all enough to really say but for right now, I am going to go with Haiku. I liked the variety in the menu, the sushi was very fresh and lived up to my expectations.
Vegetarian: DaLat - everything i have ever had at this place tastes good. You eat a vegetarian meal there and meat eaters are drooling over it. It's friggin delicious. Honorable mention to Nancy Change for the faux seafood and chicken substitutions, they are delicious. And Quan Yin is great too, but DaLat, man! get me some fresh rolls right now!

Re: Volcano Boy Gluttony Poll (or best worcester food)

Cedar Street Restaurant is actually in Sturbridge, right off of Route 20. Place really is top notch, went there last fall and everything was top notch beginning to end.

http://www.cedarstreetrestaurant.com/

For Southbridge, I would HIGHLY recommend the Vienna Restaurant. It's (obviously) german fare, very high-class and decent-sized servings. Plus their beer of choice is Berkshire Brew, nothing like a 22 oz with your meal!

Re: Volcano Boy Gluttony Poll (or best worcester food)

Bang for your Buck : get back to you on this one.

Restaurant to take a date:  BaBa is a really romantic, intimate and beautiful place.  the atmosphere is the perfect place (in my oppinion) to bring a date.

Breakfast:  I really like the pancakes at Corner Lunch they seem sweeter than other places in town.

Cafe/Coffee Shop: get back to you on this one.

Chinese:  Just had my favorite tonight; Jordan Chicken from Chopsticks at Webster Sq.  If you like Generals chicken you should like the Jordan they make here.

Desert: I never have room
Diner:  I am deeply saddened by the edgmere selling ownership a while back.  After that we ony went a couple of times before they shut down.  I miss the homefries there.

HotDogs I have only had coney island.  they were ok.  It reminded me of ny hot dogs you buy off some street vender.  I am kinda suprised this is even a catagory.

Italian:  Being Italian I am a little ashamed that a place doesn't come to mind but we don't usually go out for Italian that much.

Mexican:  Have only Tried Moe's.  But being able to get a Margarita in a To Go cup deffinately adds points on to the score.

Pizza:  I usually go with the chain restaurant here and get Dominos

Seafood: Never had Coral,  Only Sole

Steak:  I don't really seak out the red meat

Strangest dish: get back to you on this one.

Restaurant of the Suburbs : We haven't been for a couple of years but we used to go to Cheng-Du on Rt 9 Westborough.  I never liked sweet and sour chichen but I craved theirs.  I have yet to find another S&S chicken that is good.

Sushi:  It is BaBa HANDS DOWN for me!  The way I see it is two sushi places that people are talking about; BaBa and Haiku.  Both places have a sushi chef with a following.  Wilson from BaBa and Kenzo from Haiku.  I have met both of them and can only understand why people follow Wilson.  He is full of life and always happy and smiling and that energy rubs off on the customers.  I have seen it.  There is also the sushi itself.  Me and a friend of mine took a "sushi field trip" and sampled sushi from both places.  We ordered the spicey scallop, tigers eye and the spider roll from Haiku because we both knew BaBa's versions of them.  Lets just say that we now appreciate BaBa that much more.

Vegetarian:  Don't usually look for vegie dishes but the tofu taco at moes is alright if you can figure out how to eat it without it running down your arm.

Re: Volcano Boy Gluttony Poll (or best worcester food)

Restaurant to take a date: Bocado. Fun, Hip, Tapas to share, get a cushy booth on the upper level throw in a few pillows then get ready to snuggle :)

Breakfast - Cranberries on Massasoit...I go there more than anywhere else right now. I love the waffles. you can get a decent breakfast for two for about $10.

Best Bang for a Buck: Vincents Meatball sub

Cafe/Coffee Shop n/a im addicted to dunkin donuts coffee and theres no way i would nominate them in this survey

Chinese: N/A I am pretty bored with the chinese food options in town

Desert: Cafe Dolce. yum. plus they have a gallery.

Diner- Ralphs for the burgers, Live music, Three bars, Best slogan ever: Eat at Ralph's and you'll live forever. What other diner can compete with that?

HotDogs- n/a

Italian- I dont eat out for Italian.

Mexican- Moes
Pizza- n/a
Seafood- Bamboo Hut on Rt 9. The Sweet and Sour seafood soup comes in a huge container that you cant possibly finish, big chunks of salmon ( plus they take the time to make it boneless - this white girl thanks you very much!) pineapples and a tasty broth with a little kick of spice....perfect pick me up when im sick. I was hoping Vietnamese would have its own catergory on this survey....the shrimp spring rolls at Da Lat are outstanding.

Steak- when i crave steak i want the marinated sirloin tips at The 99 on Rt 20. Order up a pound of steak tips med rare and they are still perfect reheated the next day.

Strangest dish: Bocado. I guess they have the strangest thing I've tried recently. Which was the Rabbit. not that rabbits are strange...its just that most places dont put rabbit on their menu.

Restaurant of the Suburbs: Yong Tong in Northboro. Thai food worth the drive
Sushi- BaBa- "wait until you see inside...this place is so sexy" anonyomous customer. I know I am biased to BaBa cuz I work there. BUT for arguements sake I only work there because I have loved Wilsons sushi 6 years prior to working for him. BaBa has a intimate cozy atmosphere, friendly outgoing staff, and the sushi is amazing. Here's some of my favorites: Black Marlin Tartaki, Tuna Chips, Hamachi Kama ( if you've never had it try it the next time you come in its the most tender fish you'll ever have - and its cooked too!) Asian Stir Fry, Plus Innovative Specials: like the Pink Crown Maki ( Spicy Alaskan King Crab with Lobster Tempura). Ama Ebi (sweet raw shrimp)

Pomagranite Martini's- yum.

Vegetarian: n/a

Re: Volcano Boy Gluttony Poll (or best worcester food)

Best:

Bang for Buck
Isadore's in Oxford HUGE sandwiches - gourmet ingredients, reasonable prices

O'Connors...see below.

Restaurant to take a date
Bocado - intimate, you share food and wine flights.
Mac's - candlelight, busy, but somehow still intimate (but in the summer they have had a fly problem in the past)
O'Connors - for a date other than the first. the waitstaff usually treats you like family and the menu is huge. You can sit and chat over great beers and great apps before you eat a meal that will make you want to take a nap.

Breakfast
Eller's on the Hill - great service, good selections, food was well prepared.
Silvertone - same reasons as above.

Cafe/Coffee Shop -I haven't found one I'm wild about.

Chinese - I dont get to eat it often so I don't really have a nomination.

Desert - wholly cannoli. Working through their pastry case is the best idea i ever had. their creams are amazingly good and not waxy tasting like many creams are

Dolce has some nice sweets with a good boozy coffe to go with

O'Connor's has this amazing molton chocolate bunt cake.

Diner - haven't found one I'm wild about either. So no real nomination from me.

HotDogs
Coney Island - chilidogs are good.
Hot Dog Annies - sit outside in the summer. Best barbeque dogs ever. 4 for a buck 25 (at least it used to be that) on Weds.

Italian
Leo's - has the best sausage in worcester. Excellent texture and taste. Not gamey or chunky. And an amazing Pasta Gomzola. Like a grown up version of spagetti-o's.

Ciao Bella - nice options and daily specials for lunch. Their pasta is never overcooked and they've got some fresh veggies.
Mexican - not many options that really feel authentic. so I have to go with Tortilla Sam's. I like their food, their salsa is fresh. Everything tastes a little Americanized for my taste though.

Pizza - I don't really love pizza so a nomination in this category from me wouldn't be a great assessment of what's good in worc.

But I'll nominate Ciao Bella's pizza anyway because it has some great options for toppings. Love sundried tomato.

Seafood
Piccolo's - very fresh tasting and very big shrimp. Lots of seafood dishes even though it's not a strictly seafood restaurant.

Sole Proprieter - incredible and perfectly cooked tuna and scallop kabobs.

Steak -
111 They do know how to make it perfectly tender and marry some great sauces with it.

Strangest dish
Rabbit at Boccado - not to often you get that choice. I like it.

Restaurant of the Suburbs
Isadores - Oxford. Can't sit down in there but they make an awesome sandwich. And you can get some gourmet cheese in there too.

Beezers Northboro - ice cream stand so it's seasonal but has some great lunches. Barbeque chicken sandwich with bacon and shoestring fries are phenominal.

Sushi - I haven't tried anywhere around here yet.

Vegetarian - I don't look close enough at the Veg menues to have a real opinion. but the indian place on shrewsbury street is pretty good and I've had a bunch of their veg options.

Lunch place
Eric's La Patiserrie - excellent gourmet sandwiches with special touches like grapes in the chicken salad. Good sweet treats as well.

Lucky's Cafe - homemade soups that sell out so fast you could miss them if you don't call the Lucky's specials hotline. I don't know their breakfast or dinners yet but i think they're serving those now too.

Isadore's see above.

Salad:

Antipasto at Ciao Bella's
Bellmondo at Piccolo's
Spinach salad at Flying Rhino

Fanny's picture

Re: Volcano Boy Gluttony Poll (or best worcester food)

Oh and Mini Kobe Beef burgers at Bocado for Burger write in nomination.  They're delicious and tiny so you can eat a little or a lot. Perfectly cooked high quality beef.

Re: Volcano Boy Gluttony Poll (or best worcester food)

I was just reminded about how luch I love Vegetarian Indian Food. There was this place in Ashland for years called Udupi that was strictly vegetarian. This place was always busy (awesome fresh to order Nan)so I was surprised when it closed a couple of years ago. Udupi instilled my love for vegetarian indian cuisine so when i get a crving for it i head out to India Cafe in Shrewsbury. Bengan Bhartha has always been my fav.
So my Vegetarian Nom goes to: India Cafe

Re: Volcano Boy Gluttony Poll (or best worcester food)

I think it changed Duncan. The last time I went up route 9 it was Udupi (within the last couple months). But if you google both names you get a listing for both, but with the same address. I'm going to guess it was Star India, and now is Udupi.

I need to know if thats the same Udupi Bhavan that was in Ashland and Framingham. seriously i think i'm gonna cry.....forget vegetarian or non- vegetarian Udupi Bhavan was the best indian food i ever had ever.

Im not waiting im gonna find out right away

Re: Volcano Boy Gluttony Poll (or best worcester food)

happiness is finding a restaurant that you thought was lost forever...thank you Fanny.
I had lunch at Udupi in Shrewsbury and it is the exact same owners and menu from the old ashland/framingham place. its been years since I had Bengan Bhartha that was so good...and the Nan...I could just sit and eat Nan all day. Theres this "puffed" one(that i don't remember the name of) that is the perfect balance of crispy and chewy. I havent had that in like three years because not many indian restaurants make it.
Udupi is Southern Indian Cuisine at its best.
please change my vegetarian and suburb nominations to Udupi in Shrewsbury.

Re: Volcano Boy Gluttony Poll (or best worcester food)

Restaurant to take a date: BaBa, beautiful room, sexy bar, amazing food, kick ass cocktails.

Bang for Buck: Dalat, cheap and just wicked good.

Breakfast: Haven't eaten breakfast in worcester since Theo's closed. Anybody know where the mail men and women of Worcester have been eating breakfast for the last few years, I would like to check it out.

Cafe/Coffee Shop: Espress Yourself in Tatnuck, nothing special but I got to support the new guy in the neighborhood even if they're closed on Friday nights and all day Saturday.

Chinese: Nancy Chang, comes the closest to not sucking, though there is no proper dim sum .

Dessert: Holy Canolli, the Dynamite Stick is pretty out of control

Diner: n/a

HotDogs: Coney Island, there is a booth with initials that my Dad carved in the 60's.

Italian: Cafe Espresso on Wall St off Grafton Street has always had awesome seafood specials with all kinds things stuffed with crabmeat. Though it has not been quite as good since they changed owners a year or so ago.

Mexican: Worcester is unfortunately devoid of edible Mexican, have to go to Border Cafe in Harvard Square for that fare. The only time I ate Mex in w-town was at Tortilla Sams and I broke a tooth on a small rock that was in my burrito, no lie.

Pizza: Toss up Between Ciao Bella and Corner Grille, Ciao's special pizzas are very creative and delicious, Corner has a very unique selection of thin crust pizzas, e.g. Chicken Curry Pizza.

Seafood: Boynton seafood specials can regularly kick ass if you avoid the deep fried stuff.

Steak: Buy some steak tips at Emerald Meats in Tatnuck and grill it up in the backyard.

Strangest dish: n/a

Restaurant of the Suburbs: Shiro's sushi on Berlin/Hudson line, super cheap and excellent prepared and served by a Japanese family in what amounts to their house.

Sushi: BaBa on Park Ave is hands down the most kick-assinest Sushi in Central Mass and can go toe to toe with anything Boston has to offer, the freshest sushi, beautiful decor, the most interesting rolls and most delicious cocktails.

Vegetarian: Dalat, cheap and just wicked good.

Re: Volcano Boy Gluttony Poll (or best worcester food)

Udupi Update

I had the most disappointing meal at Udupi yesterday. I ordered the veggie pakoras, and they were awful. Nothing like any pakoras I've ever had before. Onion, eggplant, potato, or squash slices (oh and okra...bleah) breaded in some weird bland chickpea batter and maybe baked. Bollywood's are so much better.

The Aloo Gobi was all onion, and about 3 pieces of potato and maybe 1 piece of cauliflower. It's supposed to be potato and cauliflower. I guess onions were on sale. For $9.95, I expect more than onions.

I will not be returning. I hope that I'm the only one that's had this experience.

Great Indian food can be had at Bollywood Grill and if you're up for a drive, try Bukhara in Jamaica Plain.

-Great food in Worcester...the falafel at Bay State Bakery. They also have good grape leaves. Best hummus ever: Mediterranean Market.

I agree with you about the pakora's. The reason they are so differant is because Udupi is Southern Indian Cuisine and as much as a love the Nan and the Bengan Bartha at Udupi; I also prefer the other style of pakora better.

I woke up craving BBQ today...

Sadly I had to leave town to get it.

Which is what I have to do when I crave Mexican...

AND wood fired pizza

AND any kind of real sandwich or just great bread for that matter (how do we not have a bakery?)

AND Chinese

AND Thai

AND Pasta

AND Steak

Thankfully I can at least curb my sushi cravings at Baba

Jesus we have a long way to go..  It would help tremendously if everyone would stop supporting these mediocre food establishments.  It would also help if the Worcester Magazine and Telegram would actually review a restaurant honestly!!   They hand out 4 or 5's at least 90% of the time.  Now I'm not saying adopt the Michelin Star standard but jesus have some fucking integrity.

Sorry to thread jack Terrible....I just woke up hungry today!

On a more positive note;-)

Best:

Bang for Buck - Las Pampas Churasceria (there is no way I spelled that right) Wood grilled mid grade meat by the pound! And its always ready.

Restaurant to take a date:
Breakfast - N/A
Cafe/Coffee Shop - Acoustic Java for one reason...the dude roasts his own beans...
Chinese - N/A
Desert - Wholly Cannoli .....what can I say...they do a good job with quite a few things.
Diner - Boulevard or Ralph's I guess
HotDogs - Do you know what goes into hotdogs??  If you don't AND you eat them....do NOT watch How Its Made on History Channel!
Italian - Piccolos as the only option but still, how hard is it to make your own pasta??
Mexican - Covered this already
Pizza - Pop's and Corner Grill are the only two edible pies in my opinion....The Wonder Bar uses canned mushrooms..WTF??
Seafood - Baba
Steak - I'll consider Willy's as being in Worcester for the sake of argument.  Dry Aged in house and seared on cured antique french skillets
Strangest dish - Tuna Jaw at Baba...fucking ROCKS!
Restaurant of the Suburbs -
Sushi - Baba - Passion and attention to detail!
Vegetarian - N/A

Cutlet n : thin slice of meat (especially veal) usually fried or broiled

not to be confused with

Chicken Cutlet: n.

While having sex on the beach the male (accidentally or intentionally) pulls out his penis and rolls it around in the sand to resemble a 'shake and bake' chicken cutlet, immediately following this he re-inserts his penis.

Re: Volcano Boy Gluttony Poll (or best worcester food)

So anytime anyone asks,"Can I cook you a chicken cutlet?" it seems as though the answer should be a very strongly worded NO!

Anyone ever had a chicken cutlet cooked in a dutch oven?
