I am curious how people want a local music radio show delivered to them. I am leaving out Satellite radio as it is not plausible at the moment that there could be a Worcester music show there. Internet/streaming, podcast or FM/AM.
I think local music could and should be incorporated into normal everyday radio. The Bees Knees get mentioned and played on WTAG in the mornings because Hank Stolz is a fan, Local artists get played on 92.5 The River, OSB have recievd airplay on WXLO and this is all during normal listening hours, not a local rock show at Midnight.
WBCN used to do local music at noon, WBRU had the Home Grown Music Hour(where I first heard The Curtain Society), and WAAF had local music mixed in to their normal playlist as well. It would be great for the "big" music stations to pick a featured local artist, like WFNX used to do, play a song a few times a day or even once a day during drivetime for a week, give a little info on the band and take calls for a reaction.
Here is my favorite radio station/band management story...again.
I was driving to Maine with the new Curtain Society 45 and press kits to give to people I knew in Portland in order to get some shows and airplay for the band. On the way up i was listening to WUNH and they were playing some 4AD, Shoegazing music so we detoured to Portsmouth, found the station and handed them the record and presskit. Twenty minutes later they were playing the song, a month later it was their number one song and they were offering the band shows.
The moral is that you need to get your music in the hands of the people that make decisions on playing it. Sending a CD to WXLO is useless. Go there, set up a meeting with the music director and pitch away. If OSB can get airplay then so could a band like Jediah.
Internet radio, Podcasts, Satellite radio are all fine but at least for now, commercial radio is still a better way to reach the masses.
I agree Barry, but why not go for both? I enjoy really specific programming. I don't want to have to listen to terrestrial radio and sit through "that" just to hear some local music. Sure it would make me happy for the band and I would swell with local pride, but you wont find me tuning in the hopes. There is no doubt that getting local music played on commercial stations is better for the bands.
I think no matter what, the key is to not have a "local" show. Unless you only want musicians and their friends to listen, it's important I think to just have a regular show, have a niche, and if there are local bands as good as the nationals you are playing, and they fit your niche, then play them too. Don't have a "local" track of the week. Don't make a big deal about the fact that they are local. Just play 'em. If they happen to be playing a show. Let people know. Don't call them "Worcester's Own" or anything like that. There is a time for that. But that time isn't when the only people who know about the band live within a 45 mile radius of Worcester.
I still feel, that to most non music scene music fans, local still means bad... not up to par... not as good. It's too bad, but I do believe this.
Hey Duncan...just out of curiosity...a while back the noiseboard was doing some podcasts...they were done by different people each month or week or something like that. Why not do something like that ourselves?
I thought the acoustic one I did came out great and was an excellent showcase for those who participated.

I love the idea of a podcast and I would be happy to host and get that happening if someone wants to put one together.
I also have some really cool plans for some local music exposure that I will be talking about real soon.

I want FM and a streaming archive.
Is that too much to ask? :)

I don't think 11 votes is exactly definitive. Anyone else gonna vote?
