It's almost physically painful for me to not watch the Sunday morning news shows this week. I've watched all of them for about as long as I can remember, but not today.
I know the odds are that 95% of the posters on here are complete Obama-heads, so I certainly don't expect anyone to sympathize with me, but this World tour that Barry is on was old before it began. I figure if B.O. can boycott our troops for years while he campaigned on the premise that they are all essentially war criminals, I can boycott his photo-op tour. Someone please tell me when he's back on American soil so I can tune into the news again.
Re: My private boycott
"while he campaigned on the premise that they are all essentially war criminals"
Evidence? Preferably not from Rush Limbaugh's website. Maybe an actual documented quote? And it should be a quote that proves Obama believes, as you say above, that our troops are "all" war criminals.
Re: My private boycott
Don't listen to/watch Limabaugh so I have no clue what he has to say about the matter. I do remember a primary speech where Obama claimed (no doubt to a bunch of like-minded folks) that all that American soldiers were doing in Iraq was air-raiding villages and killing civilians, or something to that effect.
Don't fret, I would never slur your Messiah. Nor would I ever try to convince someone to not vote for the man. It's impossible to reason someone out of feeling an emotion, and the vast majority of Obama voters will vote based on emotion, much like they did for Deval. Besides, McCain is not my first, third, or even fifth choice among Republicans, so I'll carry no water for him.
Anyway, if you're an Obama-backer, your perspective might be valuable to me on another front. While I was reading about the upcoming RNC/DNC Conventions and the possibility of disturbances by protesters/"anarchists", etc. something struck me. I'm not predicting anything, mind you, just asking: If Obama loses in November, particularly if it's a tight margin, do you believe that there is any possibility (1-in 10, 1-in-100, No Chance?) that there will be serious (deadly) riots in some of the more riot-prone cities in the U.S.? It sounds paranoid to even put into words, but I can imagine a scenario where the network anchors, having seen their candidate defeated, would immediately conjure up some "racist" explanation for his defeat and fan the flames of discord.
Re: My private boycott
Really?
Obama said all US troops were doing was air-raiding villages and killing civilians. Really? And every other new outlet and conservative pundit (cuz we know everyone else is in the tank for Barak) somehow missed this.
Better e-mail a copy of this speech to the "fair and balanced" folks, they've been waiting for a gaffe like this for months.
The fact is there are a lot of serious issues that affect everyone, regardless of whether they believe the Iraq war was a failed strategy from its inception (while, by the way, respecting the sacrifice of American troops).
Statements like that only obfuscate the real issues. By the way, no one has a monopoly on the right answers. We've paid dearly for the last eight years for that egomaniacal falsehood.
Re: My private boycott
Actually he did say that in New Hampshire last year. I beleive it was in reference to increasing troops in Afghanistan. Its old news.
Re: My private boycott
No, Joe, what he said was the surge was taking resources, which weren't being properly deployed in Iraq, away from the war on terror in Afghanistan. In no uncertain terms did he say we were killing innocent civilians in Iraq.
Re: My private boycott
I know he didn't say we were killing civilians in Iraq, he said we were doing that in Afghanistan. I didn't see where Lincoln had said that in reference to Iraq. I thought he was just saying that he said troops were killing civilians.
Re: My private boycott
Point taken, Joe.
I guess my larger point is that this is a campaign year, and for us to squabble about semantics rather than hold our candidates to a higher standard of intellectual and meaningful discourse allows the proccess to devolve into yet another sound-byte driven campaign. Is the real question who has a plan to reinvigorate an economy which has affected every person I know (wealthy, poor of middle-class), or what some wacky pastor said last year? So what if Barak goes to Middle East. Are we forgetting the "Bagdhad is safe" flack jacket walk through the open-air market this past winter? Don't let the image-makers get you to take your eye off the ball!
Re: My private boycott
I agree. Its unfortunate that it has become what it has become . Fox, CNN, MSNBC, whomever, can not wait to break out their giant IPhone screen things and open up graphs or circle things with their fingers while playing clips of the candidates dancing at Oktoberfest. I will wait for the plan, assess its likelihood, in my mind, of success and vote accordingly.
If Obama wants to go around the Middle East and Asia doing his thing, thats all part of the dance.
Re: My private boycott
I should have known better. Whenever the first post on a thread that has nothing to do with "Limbaugh" or "NeoCons", etc. (you all know your own buzzwords) is responded to with either of the terms, all is lost.
Believe me, I heard it, I remember it, he said it. And if you want to be a 12-year old nit-picky twit about it, I did say "essentially".
I get it. No criticism of Obama is allowed. Perfectly fine with me. In fact, for MA voters, I endorse him. Keep the streak going.
Anyway, apart from the stultifying partisan jibber-jabber did anyone see my conjecture about unrest? Again, I'm not predicting, and I am most definitely not desirous of, problems. But the potential for a few urban perfect storms seems to exist. Particularly in large cities located in states that go overwhelmingly for Obama.
Re: My private boycott
Here's what I'm objecting to. You keep saying this:
"I do remember a primary speech where Obama claimed (no doubt to a bunch of like-minded folks) that all that American soldiers were doing in Iraq was air-raiding villages and killing civilians, or something to that effect."
"Believe me, I heard it, I remember it, he said it."
When people on this thread ask you for proof, you deflect the issue somewhere else. All I'm asking is that you back up this comment. Show me the evidence. This is how lies and misinformation gets spread. You keep repeating this, nobody calls you on it, and then other people read it and believe it's true.
How would you respond if I said the following:
"I remember John McCain [or insert any other politician you like] making some comment during one of his primary speeches about Hispanics all being lazy. I can't remember which speech, or when it was exactly, but I'm one hundred percent certain he said it. Trust me."
Would you just trust me, or would you ask me to support that?
Re: My private boycott
Oh God. So now I'm obligated to go "Google" some audio clip that you'll inevitably claim is "out of context" anyway? Not worth my time.
Anyway, that's not the reason I won't vote for him, it's the reason I won't watch his overseas debutante ball. I would never vote for a 97% Party- line voting Democrat, I'm a Conservative, for crying out loud.
So, anyone without their Obama-bone all up in a knot think there is anything to my "bad-news if the brother-man lose" scenario?
Re: My private boycott
Lincoln,
If you want to call me a 12-year-old nit picker for telling you you got not only the essence, but the substance of a quote by a political candidate wrong, well, I guess that's fine. We all are entitled to healthy fantasy lives. But nowhere, and I mean nowhere, did I invoke neo-con or anything else. I'm talking about hubris. And speaking about hubris, it's an awfully long stretch between dissatisfaction with the results of an election and, I'm parapharasing, riots in places prone to riots. That smacks of demagogary. I really hope you don't mean what I think your implying. You have a valid point of view. Don't undermine it with something like that.
Re: My private boycott
I'm not much of an Obama fan myself, Lincoln, so I can promise you that's not my issue. But I don't believe we can have good political discussions if everyone isn't willing to support their "facts."
As for the question of riots . . . there were no riots when John Kerry lost. Why should an Obama loss incite riots? If the candidate had been Hilary, would a loss by her have incited riots?
Re: My private boycott
P.S.
Barry Goldwater and William Buckley would spin in their graves if that's what your idea of conservatism is.
Re: My private boycott
So, by "support", you mean go find someone else who's said the same thing on the Internet? If I must, I guess I will, but really guys, this version of Internet "discussion" should be relegated to the ashcan of history. If you love Obama, or hate McCain, or enjoy farming mushrooms in your sneaker collection, I'd rather hear your opinion than some knob you've linked to through the Internet.
I'm a veteran (doesn't make me special, I know, don't worry) and what he said was deliberately wishy-washy (he used the word "just" rather than "only", for instance) but his intent was clear. He wanted to give his audience a bit of red-meat, anti-war style. Pretending that Obama is infallible is not the same as supporting him.
Re: My private boycott
What I mean by support is to give us the actual quote from Obama! I can't understand how this is complicated. If he really said what you claim he said, someone would have reported it. Find that quote.
Instead of simply attributing ideas to a candidate, let's hear what the candidate actually said. THEN we can argue about it. Until then, we're having a debate about nothing.
Re: My private boycott
"We've got to get the job done there," he said of Afghanistan. "And that requires us to have enough troops so that we're not just air-raiding villages and killing civilians, which is causing enormous problems there."
Okay? Do you feel better now that you've seen it in quotation marks?
Just Google any combination of those words and you'll find a virtually infinite number of citations. He said it in NH.
Re: My private boycott
Long way from calling our troops war criminals! Yeah, I do feel better now that it's in quotes. It puts it into context. Kind of like "Bagdhad's a safe place" with the flack jackets and heavily armed contigent just out of camera view during the McCain trip this winter. Politics, baby! You're missing the larger point.
We could parse every statement and action by both candidates ad infinitem. The fact is, until we demand that they address real issues (economy, healthcare, energy policy, VA hospitals), we snipe about crap. Give me substance! My vote is till for Ron Paul.
Re: My private boycott
Ron Paul, Dennis Kucinich, The Bilderberger Group...I knew one of those three were coming up sooner or later. Oy vey.
Re: My private boycott
Hey, how about sarcasm? I believe it's still a valid form of humor. Although, I admit Kucinich is a better punchline!
Re: My private boycott
I am glad to see the actual quote, Lincoln. Now that we have it before us, what's your problem with it? Do you think it's
a) Not true?
b) Or do you believe that people should not criticize their leaders during wartime, no matter what those leaders are doing?
That quote looks like a criticism of the people who are running the war--not the people who are fighting it. He is calling for more troops. So why can't he criticize the administration for the way they are conducting the war? Isn't that a legitimate perspective? And why would that mean that he can't visit the troops? He is arguing for more support for them--shouldn't they welcome that perspective?
Re: My private boycott
Lincoln,
Let me go back to your original premise. You can start listening to the news again because the vast amount of time on national news is spent on issues other than the war. The largest newshole is spent about the economy, healthcare, home foreclosures and bank fraud.
Re: My private boycott
Like they say on the internet: Don't feed the troll, guys.
Re: My private boycott
God, the Obamites are particularly defensive on this site. If only they held Obama to the same standard of specificity that they hold Internet posters, they'd be forced to agree with me.
"We've got to get the job done there," he said of Afghanistan. "And that requires us to have enough troops so that we're not just air-raiding villages and killing civilians, which is causing enormous problems there."
If you believe that we're "just air-raiding villages and killing civilians", then you no doubt agree with Obama's assesment. Since I know for a fact that that is NOT what we're doing, I think I have the right (some would say obligation) to point out his error. But, of course, it wasn't an "error" in the traditional sense, it was a political statement meant to shore up the support of the MoveOn.org'ers of the world. I wonder if anyone of you would acknowledge any single flaw about the man, no matter how manifest. I fear not.
As for "implying" anything about riots, what's there to imply? I stated plainly that it occurs to me that in recent history citizens in certain areas of the country are prone to expressing dissatisfaction by flipping cars, beating people, and torching businesses. I know, facts are racist (I assume that was where you were going... surprise, surprise) unless they're couched in mind-numbing justifications and P.C. rationalizations, but I don't have to abide by that conventional stupidity if I don't want to.
Re: My private boycott
Uh Oh, Pete's a fibber.
I did turn on the news and within seconds they were talking about Obama's jaunt. It was actually kinda "cute" to see him talking about needing "2 or 3 more brigades", etc. That dude wouldn't know what a Brigade was if one showed up at his doorstep. I didn't see any Dukakoid pics of him wearing a Snoopy helmet yet, but I'm hoping one or two make the airwaves.
Re: My private boycott
I boycotted Target once for accusing me of stealing a $6 item after spending $280 there. I returned all the stuff and went elsewhere. I never went back and no one noticed but me and a few friends who laughed every time I said "oh, i don't shop there." Then I grew up a little.
Re: My private boycott
Lincoln,
I said vast, not exclusive.
I'm sorry I won't be able to continue corresponding with you. I was at first interested in discussing some very valid points you were making. But now I realize this is a pissing match that you, for whatever reason, must win at all costs. I hope your anger at anything or anyone that does not fall within your tunnel vision sustains you through what will prove for you to be a very long and frustrating election cycle.
Re: My private boycott
Glad to see you have me so clearly pegged, Pete. Now go back to discussing things only with people who you are sure already agree with you.
Re: My private boycott
I don't have a horse in this race, but Lincoln, there ARE certain standards of debate that are aimed at shedding more light than heat on a subject. The exchange I just read did not exhibit any of those standards. Everyone defaulted to vague ad hominem sentiments almost immediately. Not cool.
Re: My private boycott

There you go. It was about Afghanistan. It was just "junior moment" while he was just "winging it" instead of reading from his cue cards.
By the way, Obama released a memo to his entourage to not wear green while visiting with Hamas and Fatah this week...because you know, as an Obama aide explained to reporters, "green is the color associated with the militant Palestinian group Hamas." http://www.cbsnews.c...
"I hear he's going to ban croissants next because they are crescent shaped."
Re: My private boycott
The boycott continues...It's kind of liberating.
Re: My private boycott
fact: nothing makes bologna more happy than being wedged between a croissant.
Re: My private boycott
I heard this!
Re: My private boycott
Fact: All Joe's posts are about junk food and they make me hungry.
Bologna Boycott
Ive boycotted all bolonga since 1982
Re: My private boycott
I've never been to Bolgona but I've been to Naples.
Rainier cherries are available at your local grocer RIGHT NOW. Go buy them before I spend my daughters college fund on them .
Obama wins in Massachusetts no matter what anyone thinks. Blue State.

I guess all the police chiefs must be racist for bringing up the topic that I brought up last month.
