Kitties

Linnea's picture

Since I am no longer a renter and I'm in a place where I'll be staying put for a while I finally feel like I can be a responsible pet owner, and I know there are plenty of pet lovers on here. Does anyone have any suggestions for local shelters where I can adopt. They will be indoor cats, does anyone have recommendations for male versus female, one versus two cats, etc? Anything else I should know?
Thanks!

Re: Kitties

my advice? get a dog! they're way more fun...
cats just hang around your house, but you can take dogs all over the place - out for a run....up to mt wachusett for a hike...to events around town. but, i guess some of us are just cat people...

i don't know anything about cats, but i do know that the worcester animal rescue league always seems to have some available and they are sooooo cute. i got my pup there and i have never been happier

happy kitty hunting

Re: Kitties

Haha it wouldn't be fair to the dog, I'm gone for very long stretches during the day and a third floor place with a small backyard is not what a dog needs. I'm a born cat person anyway, maybe I'll take a ride over to the animal rescue league today. Thanks!

Re: Kitties

We have two cats, one male and one female, that are siblings. My mother-in-law has the other pair of siblings from the litter. It's worked out pretty well... they are ridiculously friendly cats.

Re: Kitties

Coming from a lifetime of about 30 cats(yes,I am the crazy cat lady), I highly recommend getting two if you are interested in kittens. The number of cats you get really depends on the age and environment they are used to. If they are older and have been an "only cat" they may not do well with others but if they are young, they need a buddy to wrestle with and help them burn off energy. They also learn behaviors from the other cats in the litter so if they are too young they can be difficult/crazy.
I love the Pat Brody shelter out in Lancaster(?). I believe the website is patbrody.com or org. They are a no kill shelter and screen the applicants prior to adoption. They also do not allow adoption at christmas for the sake of the animal. It's not the prettiest shelter but they have good values. 2 of our 3 came from there and they are awesome cats. I also have a co-worker that was trying to find a home for some kittens. I can check on that on tuesday. Good luck!

Re: Kitties

We have two as well.

We had one by himself for about 9 months or so and then got him a kitten for a friend in the fall and they are now best friends. Two cats are the way to go IMO if you can afford it. The time to clean etc isn't all that much more when you add the second cat and they are so much more active and interactive when they have a buddy to hang out with all the time.

Peanut is the first kitty and we got him from Crystal's brother, Johnnie is the 2nd kitty and we found him on petfinder.com he was being fostered somewhere out around Maynard, I can't remember exactly where.

Re: Kitties

To follow on what 4rIlla stated, we adopted the 2nd kittie at Metrowest Animal Welfare League out of Marlborough....But I say help out Worcester Animal League, they have many more kitties that need a good home. And 2 is always better...That way you do not feel bad when you are gone. They cuddle and keep each other happy and not lonely..

Get a Bengal ... it's a cat that thinks it's a dog!

Re: Kitties

Thanks everyone. So I guess I'm getting two kittens, now I just have to figure out where I'm getting them from. If anyone sees any kittens around let me know! Of course kitty litter and food advice, etc is welcome too.

Re: Kitties

Well for a condo the best litter is either the crystals or pine. We switched over 100% to pine now, it helps with odor.

Re: Kitties

If you are getting two kittens, get yourself some really thick gloves (that you must wear at all times in the house), and sleep in Jeans...My little one scratched the hell out me constantly until she was 5 months old. She got pretty creative with it too, my favorite was the four foot sideways flying leap into my hip....They don't do it
on purpose, thats how kittens play. The best kitty equipment I have ever purchased are my squirt bottles. My 10 year old cat is 100% trained, so I don't have to use the bottles anymore, but its soo necesary for kittne training. Unless you want 2 cats running your Condo.

Re: Kitties

Second Chance Animal Shelter in Brookfield is a great shelter.

Re: Kitties

I looked around, but had not seen any info on Second Chance, they have very reasonable rates and cute kitties. I sent over an application, wish me luck. I was also looking on their website and they were looking for volunteers, I'm thinking about volunteering to help with their newsletter. Thanks for the info, thanks everyone else too, now I just have to figure out what pine litter is, and once again I'm undecided between one versus two cats. I'll post pics when I finally find a little guy (or girl)!

Re: Kitties

Here are my new kitties, I went to Second Chance planning on taking one home but there were so many I had to get two. They are brother and sister, about a month old, so I'll be taking them home once they are fixed in a couple weeks. Can't wait! Thanks for the help everyone!

Re: Kitties

Kitties are adjusting very well and they love people and are great with kids. Barbicide my cousin was saying that you have a great litter box and I was hoping you could send me the info on it, I clean twice a day and it's still a little stinky. I still can't figure out the PM thing on here but I figure someone else may also have a suggestion.

Re: Kitties

I don't have a suggestion...but I want to know more about this litter box.... Punky said it was fantastic!

MelleYeah's picture

Re: Kitties

You still have to completly empty the litterbox every week or so, regardless of wether or not your being thorough in your daily routine. I have a covered litterbox, and I can only smell it when the bitches eat something thyre not supposed to....

Chick-n-Little's picture

Re: Kitties

I empty and bleach mine once a week, definitely helps keep the smell out, but this new one has some kind of pad (like puppy pads) in a tray underneath... not sure how it works but Barbacide has 3 cats and you would never know it.

Re: Kitties

I used Feline Pine and never had a stink problem. The only problem with Barbicide's litter box is that you really should pay attention to the cat's pee and poop. It can tell you a lot about the health of your cat.

Hi! :-)

Re: Kitties

We use Feline Pine like Fanny does (or sometimes the Price Chopper version).

Of course it stinks after they leave a log, but I just flush them down the toilet. I change the litter in full once a week and flush the turds as they are made and dont have any major stink issues.

Is it the charcoal pad? I've seen those, sounds like a good idea....considering my cat is not the greatest bury-er.

I'm out getting my abs airbrushed on...leave a message

Re: Kitties

MY cats are compulsive bury'ers....I have to go over there and shoo them out sometimes cuz i think their just playin around...

Re: Kitties

Sorry, didn't mean to sway the converasation to cat poop. I'm gonna try the feline pine but I really want to know about those fancy litter boxes.

Re: Kitties

We have three covered cat boxes in the cellar which are changed in full weekly. We buy the 40 lb buckets at Sams Club.

When I was a kid we had a cat and she used the best litter box available, the great outdoors. She'd scratch the door when she needed to be let out and scratch the door when she need to be let in.

Re: Kitties

I tried the pine my cats didn't like it. Fresh Step seems to work the best for me. When we had 5 cats (with the kittens) now we only have 3 I still clean it once a day.

Re: Kitties

The litter box we have is made by Tidy Cat and called Breeze. It's about $33 at Target and costs about $11/month to maintain. Basically its two tiered, litter on top, pad on the bottom. We have 3 cats(one which is especially stinky) and have tried everything. I'd say we've tried every litter, box, contraption etc and this is our fav. We had a littermaid for about 2 yrs which worked great for the first 6 months or so but started to crap out(no pun intended). It was also difficult to find a less expensive litter that worked with it. When we moved into our house we had the problem of no outlet in the only place the box could realistically go...Batteries crapped out in about 2 days. Anyways, I'd seen ads and decided to try it. The litter is good for a month. It doesn't absorb liquid but does absorb smell. It is also non-toxic which is good because our kitten likes to play with it:) Basically there are grates in the top half and the liquids go thru into a puppy pad type thing. With 3 cats, we can go about 4 days. Solids, well, you need to scoop. We do daily.
Even though its about the same as far as maintenance goes, the lack of odor is well worth it. The only time we've noticed an odor is post vaca because the pad was thrown directly in the trash, not in a tied bag. This is a long winded post but I'm a big fan. We've tried everything and this is definitely the best for us. Plus its about $100 cheaper than the littermaid...

Re: Kitties

I still stick by feline pine. It's compressed pine sawdust. Starts out as pellets and turns back into sawdust. The smell is more like pine than ammonia if you smell it at all. You can flush the stuff down the toilet. You can buy a 2 part litterbox to make cleaning easier. You use less of the product than regular litters (Barbicides recommendation not included). Plus it's better for the environment and the kitties.

http://www.naturesearth.com/

You can get your first bag free and it details how to switch over from a clay consistency litter to the pine pellets. I do not recommend the clumping.

I think if you really don't want a stinky cat house, especially with multiple cats, you do have to scoop poop pretty much daily.

I am thrilled I no longer have cats and do not have to deal with their poops. I am totally getting a dog next year.

Dogs are too much work if your not home all the time.

Re: Kitties

I know that's why next year...ha...which may be in like 5 years... or when I'm not single anymore...so yeah I would say 5 years sounds about right...
