Jumpin Juice & Java - Chandler Street

duncan's picture

In the former location of the Tatnuck Bookseller on Chandler Street, where the M.S.P.C.C. is now, I spotted this sign for "Jumpin Juice & Java Cafe". On the one hand I am pleased that some sort of cafe is opening in this great space but on the other, I hate the name. I don't know what is worse, hair salons or coffee shops but the goofy names have to end.

I have had an idea for either a book or a website for some time now. The puns are just so awful.

I've been going to Kustom Kuts for like 20 years.

Re: Jumpin Juice & Java - Chandler Street

My daughter and I rode our bikes to Jumpin' Juice and Java tonight for a coffee and a smoothee. The place had a soft opening on Monday, and will have an official opening in a couple of weeks.

Here are a few notes.

They must have been reading our thread about the Q, because the barista was the nicest, most friendly person I have ever met. The service was fast and excellent.

They maintained the exposed wooden beams and ceilings of Tatnuck, and replaced the skylights with big new windows that let in tons of light. They have a long rectangular area with tables, plus two separate nooks with couches, and one of them with a gas fireplace. There is also a rent-able conference room. Overall the place is very wide-open and light and spacious.

They have a full menu of coffees, juices, smoothees, sandwiches, paninis, breakfast sandwiches, soups and salads. Our drinks were great. Open from 7 am to 9 pm.

I think people who like their coffee shops to be more homey places, where you chat with your fellow patrons, will probably not like it. Personally I prefer a more anonymous atmosphere where I can do my work and drink my beverage in peace. So I loved it.

The only downside was the music from the speakers. I heard a country song, an Enya song, and a couple of other songs I couldn't place. Seemed completely random, and trying to be everything to everyone.

They will be booking both spoken word and musical acts there--nice big room to perform in.

Speaking of hair salon names, I came across a great (bad) one this summer: Curl Up and Dye.

Re: Jumpin Juice & Java - Chandler Street

I stopped in to JJ&J this morning for a coffee (dark roast). Coffee was fine though it wasn't very strong for a dark roast, service pleasant and very fast, I didn't stay so I can't say anything about the vibe in there. I looked around and my initial reaction was that I don't like the TVs, but it's a nice big room in a great old building.

I may make this my morning stop but I struggle getting through the doors of a place with such a corny name.

Just call it the Triple J's in your head and you'll be fine.

I saw a place by the same name up in Maine near Old Orchard Beach.

I always liked The Hair Force.

I'm looking forward to trying Jumping Java.
