I have to admit something.. you'll lose respect in me though... maybe.

JoeBro's picture

I have a new favorite restaurant... It's kind of embarrassing (to me) to admit.

The Olive Garden, OMFG! Been there twice in the past week.. plus, pretty good wine selection, awesome service, salads have damn good house...
I had some steak tips marinated perfecly on top of a bed of fettucini alfedo.

(hey, at least it's not Vinny Testicles)

thoughts?

I love this place. Lunch time you can get unlimited soup and salad for under $7 how cheap is that.

Re: I have to admit something..

I've been boycotting ever since they took the chocolate lasagne off the menu...seriously, whose idea was that?

JoeBro's picture

yup, Solomon Pond

yup, Solomon Pond Mall.

here's a little added bonus besides having awesome food.. The waitstaff all have a contest every night on who sells the most wine... So you'll see them all carrying around a bottle. When they come to your table they ask if you want a sample.. so they pour you 1/4 glass, you can chug it down and say you want to try something else.. then they'll pour you glass after glass (w/ absolutely no attitude). of course, I'm sure they're not happy if you go through 10 samples and then be like "nah, I think I'll have a coke".

Has to be my least favorite restaurant ever.

All these great Italian restaurants in Worcester...Olive Garden?

Where do they serve your favorite steak? Applebees?

Re: I have to admit something.. you'll lose respect in me though

While we're talking about chains, has anyone been to the Not Your Average Joe's in Westborough? I used to like the one in Natick before it disappeared.

JoeBro's picture

hey, dont gnocch it till you

hey, dont gnocch it till you try it...

It's nothign I'm proud of (Loving the Olive Garden) but I'm not a fan of any Italian restaurant in Worcester... Especially Shrewsbury Street. That restaurant at the beginning of Shrewsbury street there that's owned by the Sole or the Chop (The Italian Kitchen or Table or Something) sucks the worst.. so does Dino's... wonderbar has alright sauce I guess though.. but red sauce is red `sauce in my book and I make the best so I dont even go out for it..

I guess Rovezzi's is allright, but I've been going there since I was a baby and it was on main street next to the old kangaroo crossing.

JoeBro's picture

that's funny about

that's funny about applebees..

filet mignon's at the Sterling Inn or (when my family used to be members) at the Worc Country Club.

Red sauce is not red sauce. I know that simply by buying it in a jar at the store. Nevermind people who slave away perfecting a perfect red sauce.

Speaking of Chain restaurants....
the ribs at Texas Road House are amazing.

I havent been to Olive Garden in years, generally i don't eat out for Italian but I have been meaning to try Piccolo's because I've heard so many good things about it.
I did try that new Italian place in downtown Millbury- Callabria. Service was great, appetizer was tasty, but I was disappointed in my meal, the side of pasta with meat sauce needed more flavor and the entree wasnt cooked in the sauce that was listed on the menu. they redid it and it was much better.
I would go back and try ordering something else.

Just busting balls....
BUT how can you say Dino's sucks and rave about Olive Garden?

I've been to Olive Garden a few times, and everytime it's just loaded with ritalin kids running around as their frumpy, rollie pollie mothers lick the garlic power and grease off their fat little fingers...chowing down on salad. I feel like handing them a feedbag and a bib.

Calabria was one of Jennever and my favorite places when it was on Shrewsbury St. We need to try the new location.

Dante's is my favorite place on Shrewsbury St. if you are looking for somewhere to try. Cafe Espresso on Wall St. is one of the best in town (if not the best).

It you really want the best, you can come to my house.

you get redsauce at Dinos or you get redsauce at the parkway diner.. it's all the same shit. and none of this shit can even come close to comparing to the sauce I slave over on a saturday w/ fresh tomatoes peppers and herbs from my own garden... make a big honkin pot of it and freeze it in little tupperwares so it's great all year long. is my point. So when I go out for italian, I hardly ever go out for a redsauce plate...

That's quite a bit different than what you said before.
IMHO, the Boulevard has the best red sauce in the city, outside of my house that is.

Re: I have to admit something.. you'll lose respect in me

my husband applied for a corporate job at bertucci's and we decided that we should probably go eat there so he wouldn't be totally ignorant about the restaurant when it came up in the interview. i went with an open mind, wanting to like the place since the prospective job was a good one and no one wants to whore themselves out at a workplace they know is crap - but olive garden was just another bland chain - like most places, they seem to over-salt and under spice,,,the sauces seemed unnaturally thick, as though there were thickeners in them (particularly noticable and ucky in the alfredo or primavera or whatever the hell it was i ordered), bread was tasteless and card-boardy. nothing to write home about, nothing to drive to marlboro for, nothing worth waiting in line for

however if you must eat at a chain restaurant...

we did go on another "research trip" to another chain just recently - ted's montana grille in westboro - i was prepared to be underwhelmed/unhappy but it was surprisingly good. excellent food carefully prepared with reasonable prices. their schtick is all about how "green" they are, and they seem sincere enough in how they are making that work. and the place is doing a lot right...good looking room too. worth a drive out to the far reaches of westboro? no, but if you're out there anyway, i'd check it out.

I like Bertucci's quite a bit for a chain. Real good pizza. And I should hate them.

I work next door to the Watertown location and I used to work close to the Acton location, so I am very familiar with their menu. I like the food there, the sashimi salad is great and that bread and oil they serve is delicious too.

Re: I have to admit something..

Ted's Montana Grill (walking distance from my house) is indeed excellent. they make an awesome bison burger. Everything is good.

Have been to the new Not Your Average Joes once and it was very good.

I can handle Olive Garden (I know what you're saying about the thick cream sauces) and Bertucci's (always undercook the pizza IMHO) for chains, but I do love Rovezzi's in Worcester and Arturo's in Westborough (also walking distance) for "real" Italian food.

I can confirm that yetitibbs runs a good restaurant. Sometimes he need an extra hand in the kitchen 'cause he's got so much good stuff going!

Red Sauce

Red Sauce is so subjective. My favorite is White City Pizza right now. The pizza saue has something in it that makes my nose itch a little, almost like vinegar does....Mt least favorite is the Italian Place on Franlkin St near Plnatation....its newish and I forgot their name, but their marainara sauce is canned diced tomatoes and extra exrta salt. Truly VILE.

JohnD's picture

Re: I have to admit something

Hey MelleYeah, I used to love White City Pizza but haven't been there in years and years. Do they still cook the pizzas real crunchy on the bottom? I love a crunchy crust.

PS - I think that may be extra oregano in the sauce.

MelleYeah's picture

WCP!

YES!!!OREGANO!!!!FINELY GROUND OREGANO!!!MUAHAHAHAAAA :)
My friend Stavros just bought the place a year or so ago, so Im not sure how they used to make the Pizza's. They're not squshy underneath at all.
They are open til 2am Fri and Sat now, and do breakfast stuff after midnight :)

Re: I have to admit something

I agree with Wirrlygirl Cafe Espresso is one of my favorites along with Rovizzi's.
O.G. is ok if you have no other place to go when you're at the mall. Those places all serve one purpose, serve the masses with somewhat acceptable food for a price that won't drive them away.

Tried Piccolo's last night and enjoyed my meal.
I was particularly impressed that the dressing was made to order. Fresh crushed mint tossed with oil and vinegar- simple and very tasty.
The calamari appetizer was ok and my chicken and lobster entree was really good.

JoeBro's picture

Piccolo's? where's

Piccolo's? where's that?

Calamari is never good (in my opinion).. But I order it way too often for really not liking it.

Wirrlygirl's picture

Re: I have to admit something.. you'll lose respect in me though

Piccolo's is on Shrewsbury Street across from Consumer Auto Parts
I like calamari - I try it almost everywhere I go. Callabria's Calamari was really good- piccolo's was lacking a little in flavor and not as tender as it could have been.
My favorite salad at BaBa is the Cucumber Squid- the squid is raw and amazingly tender.

I went to The Olive Garden last night and it sucked. I’ve had better service, food, time at friendly’s. I looked throughout the menu with an open mind and there wasn’t very much that appealed to me except the dish I get time and time again (steak gorgonzola w/ fettucini alfredo). Which I got again and it wasn’t even really that great… plate came wicked hot which lead me to believe that it was probably reheated or sat for a long time on a heating table waiting to get picked up… man it sucked.. and there was a baby crying a couple tables away.. shit even the salad was nasty and the bread was doughy…

My apologies,

Joey B

Maggiano's is a decent Italian chain. I love their mushroon raviolis, although I remove some of the alfredo sauce its baked in. "Don't drown your food." There's one in Boston near Copley.

I hate the Olive Garden though with all my heart. It all stems back to my first experience where I was made to wait in an over crowded , loud, bar area with a crappy drink for 45 minutes to be served salty food from a sucky server. ("S"'s were cheap so I bought a bunch for that sentence.) I have been forced to go on two other occasion with less of a crappy experience but I still thought the food sucked especially those doughy bread sticks everyone loves.
