Four men charged in Kelley Square melee
WORCESTER — Four men were arrested after a melee in Kelley Square over the weekend, police said.

Sgt. Kerry F. Hazelhurst said that one man was stabbed in the fight; another was hit in the head with a rock. Neither man was seriously injured, Sgt. Hazelhurst said.

Police arrested Derek Shumaker, 24, of 33 Vernon St.; Carlos Ricard, 25, of 99 Grandview Ave.; Richard Perez, 36, of 33 Vernon St.; and Carlos Perez, 38, of 33 Vernon St.

Mr. Shumaker was charged with disorderly conduct; Mr. Ricard was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest; Richard Perez was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct; and Carlos Perez was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct.

Sgt. Hazelhurst said the fight broke out around 2:30 a.m. in front of the Salty Dog Saloon. He said Carlos Perez allegedly threw a large rock and hit Mr. Ricard. Richard Perez grabbed Mr. Ricard and threw him to the ground and kicked him in the face. Richard Perez later told police he had been stabbed by Mr. Ricard.

Richard Perez was taken by ambulance to UMass Memorial Medical Center — University Campus, where he was treated and released, and later arrested. Several police officers and a state police trooper were called in to assist with the arrests, Sgt. Hazelhurst said.

Does it seem like Derek Shumaker just should not have been in this story.
