Re: I don't get Tom Waits

Nothin to really get. Either you dig his quasi maudlin, backwater creepy vaudeville blues or you don't. v:O)

I like it. In semi-small doses. I don't like it all, I'm not that type of fan, but there's alot to like.

It's OK, Erin, I don't get Joy Division, Radiohead, or Justin Timberlake. These assholes don't rock.

Re: I don't get Tom Waits

I could write forever about this subject, but here's my basic take. Some artists really play off the contrast between melody and chaos or dischord. The most pop-oriented songs tend to be pure, sweet melody; the most chaotic songs are like thrash, or experimental music.

Wilco plays off this contrast all the time. If you listen to "Via Chicago," for example, the chaotic drum rolls that stop on a dime and lead into the quiet verse are a great example of driving up the chaos in order to make the melody, when it bursts from that chaos, sound all the more pleasing. Wilco does this on lots of songs, in less strong ways ("Poor Places," "Kidsmoke," and so on).

Tom Waits does the same thing, but leans more towards chaos than melody. At the heart of most of his songs are really beautiful melodies--that's why so many people cover his songs. But he seems to like to push chaos and discord onto those melodies--he does it with his voice, with the strange instruments he uses, and with percussion. So as a listener, you have to fight your way through that stuff sometimes in order to get at the melody.

Just like the artists themselves, I think listeners have different levels of interest and tolerance in the chaotic or discordant element. If you just like the melodies, Tom Waits ain't the guy for you.

Personally, I love Tom Waits, and I think that if you are willing to tolerate some of that chaos, you get re-paid handsomely for it with some amazing lyrics and really interesting musical compositions.

Jim, I think that there's more to like - and dislike - than that. I don't know quiter what it is, but those aren't the things I wrestle with with Waits' music.

I respect the artist Tom Waits, but am still creeping ever so slowly toward enjoying his music. It's taking me decades, and I generally love chaos - and melody - in music.

Re: I don't get Tom Waits

i'm a waits freak. love the entire catalogue.

like dylan, lots of folks get turned off by his voice. others get turned off by his harry partch style experimentations.

but the dude's an incredible songwriter (his post 1980 stuff is all co-written with wife kathleen brennan) and i love his twisted stuff.

the rain dogs, frank's wild years and swordfishtrombones trilogy is my favorite.

and let the record reflect that...

rod stewart didn't write 'downtown train'.

the eagles didn't write 'old '55'

the boss didn't write 'jersey girl'

That may be the coolest quote ever... from a guy and band that I really don't get...

Guided By Voices. A topic for another thread perhaps...

There should be a Robert Pollard quote thread 'cause there are many

Another of the great quotes comes from Waits himself:
“Apparently the highest compliment our culture grants artists nowadays is to be in an ad — ideally naked and purring on the hood of a new car. I have adamantly and repeatedly refused this dubious honor, ... While the court can't make me active in radio, I am asking it to make me radioactive to advertisers.”

Just found this http://www.worcesterite.com/forums/music/2008/1/7/tom-waits from January 7, 2008. Pretty much the same conversation topic.

Re: I don't get Tom Waits

Inspired by this thread to go back and look for more Waits, I bought his first release, "Closing Time." Absolutely nothing like the Tom Waits you know now. A dozen songs of a piano balladeer with a normal singing voice.

The song "I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love With You" is just an amazing, heartfelt song. I played it for my wife--who hates Tom Waits--and asked her to guess who was singing it--"The guy from Lifehouse?" she said.

All the more interesting than, to see how this guy that could write and croon these beautiful ballads decided to turn himself into this completely other persona.

This rendition is slower than the CD, and on guitar, but it still gives you an idea. Listen to it, take my word for it:

Re: I don't get Tom Waits

That a pretty good song... I think I'll look into early Tom Waits. I can't get into the growly dying old man voice.

Either you feel this one way deep down in your loins/g-spot/happy place/dark place or you don't, not too much to discuss here...

I don't. Looks like acting to me.

I am in love with TW and I don't think he would argue the acting comment. Over the year his work HAS morphed into an overtly theatrical mode. It's a total "experience" if you will. Kind of a cabaret deal.

I've been with him since I was in high school - and that was a long long time ago. Maybe it's something you need to grow up with to dig

I wasn't saying it was acting as an insult just an observation and possibly why I don't enjoy it. I don't think that it is something you need to grow up with. I know many people old and young that like him and are new fans and old fans.

Re: I don't get Tom Waits

Well, Waits is an actor, too, not to mention that clip is from a full-blown "concert film." He's a storyteller and he frequently exaggerates the coarseness of his voice for dramatic effect. I don't expect everyone to enjoy that, but it's one of the things I personally like best about him.

I watched The Outsiders today. He has a small part in that.

Re: I don't get Tom Waits

i have a lot of love for tom waits, but have to say that the past few albums has been rather disappointing. seems he can just phone in any nonsense and people will praise him.
i just finished a biography of him, 'Lowside of The Road: A Biography of Tom Waits', and have to say that in the end he kind of comes off as a wanker. he seems to see musicians as a means to an end, completely hates touring, and pretty much cuts off anyone who dares talk about him. once he met Kathleen Brennan, it seems it was all downhill. it was a great read though, i only have to say that the book does take the shine off him in many regards if you're a huge fan.

An anagram of "Tom Waits" is "Mows a tit"
