World Music in Worcester

Erinnn's picture

Does anybody ever go to world music events in Worcester? Notable venues or bands, etc. I know they're out there, I just don't know how to find them.

Re: World Music in Worcester

Have you seen Jubilee Gardens? There are plenty of elements of world music in there, even if it might not fit a strict definition of that genre. I mean, they have an oud in the band and everything.

They play at Sahara once a month . . . it's a terrific show.

That is what I was going to suggest. Also, the Latino Festival that happens downtown every year is an absolute treasure when it comes to world music. Really amazing stuff and underrated by the Worcester hoi polloi.

Re: World Music in Worcester

There are "Traditional Irish Seisiuns" on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at Fiddler's Green at the Worcester Hibernian Cultural Centre on Green St.

Having a lot of experience in both attending and participating in Irish Trad sessions both locally and in Ireland I can honestly say that these things are the real deal. Though being an open session some weeks are better than others depending on who shows up.

And Jim, who posted the first comment, leads Irish session music at the Greyhound. It's called Muirshin Durkins.

There is a Gamalon orchestra at Holy Cross. Clark tends to have something every year, as do most of the colleges, in the vein of Indian or African.

World Music is one of my favs...
Esthema is unbelievable...they mostly play around Boston, but has a show coming up in Prov. www.esthema.com
Jubillee is great.
Check out schedules at Bocado and Morocco, who often have great stuff...latin and middle eastern inspired.

If you find any gypsy stuff...do let me know.

Our own 91.3FM WCUW/www.wcuw.org. - has several ethnic music shows, including "Music of the Whole Earth" - Saturdays at 5p.m. But they rarely offer live music - on-air or off-site.

Very enjoyable show.

Re: World Music in Worcester

for a town boasting "diverse" worcester has no real culture outside of 70's cover bands and shitty pop and blues acts. the real jazz players get little recognition for their art, while spoiled little rich kids hog up the venues doing unoriginal cover band material.

When I see the comments to your post here, it's clear:

There are "ONCE A YEAR LATIN MUSIC FESTIVALS" and the occasional passing through of a World Beat sound of some sort, but there really is no music culture scene here anything outside the realm of shit rock, blues, pop cover bands.

Actually - to clarify - the culture IS here, which is what frustrates I man. Truth is, that the venues are mishandled by deep rooted closet racists.

- this is sad for a city with such a large Latino community. Ask anyone about the Latin or hip-hop music scene and their quick to mention violence.

This post is a breath of assurance - that at least other folks out there are hungry for cultural sustenance as well.

It would be great to be able to feel some Caribbean or Latin vibes on Millbury or Green Street regularly throughout the year!

More information at http://notlobmusic.googlepages.com

....which leads me to think...if one cannot find a commercial venue presenting world music, do it yourself at a house concert, or rent a hall and present a larger concert.

As long as this thread is up right now, I should note that the Ed Melikian ensemble is playing at the Sahara this Saturday evening. They play traditional Armenian music, and put on a really amazing show, which frequently includes both traditional dancing and the occasional belly dancer.

Re: World Music in Worcester

Over the next week I will be presenting two World musicians at a house concert series in Grafton.

Sunday, February 21 - TONY BIRD

http://www.worcesterite.com/forums/music/2010/2/17/notfarg-house-concerts-presents-tony-bird-father-african-folk-rock
"Most of my life I've been on a search for things that can unite life, rather than divide it, possibly because of my very divisive background in growing up with colonialism and racism in Africa. My music has ended up being a synthesis of universal spirituality, politics and nature."
~ Tony Bird

From southeast Africa, Tony Bird, a Malawi-born song man, is a complete original. With a mesmerizing intensity, his voice, vision, guitar style and persona are unique in all of folk music. Bird's African roots have produced a performer with a far-ranging repertoire that includes exotic travelogues from mountains with misty landscapes to desert and bushland filled with lions, birds, bushmen, mangoes, monkeys, sunsets and bicycles. All this savannah-laden tropicana is interspersed with narrative tales of darkness and delight, topical and historical commentary, love songs, musical tone poems, rallying cries of inspiration and a whimsical sense of humor.....

Thursday, February 25 - SARAH MCQUAID

The concerts are preceded by a pot luck meal with the artists.
