Tonight myself and some friends went out to Willy's in downtown Shrewsbury to celebrate International Sushi Day, and it occurred to me that we don't really celebrate the 'burbs here on Worcesterite too much.
So what are your favorite places in the suburbs of Worcester?
For me Worcester metro has always been the first and second ring towns. You get beyond that and it seems like the majority of the folks aren't so Worcestercentric. Even in some of the second ring towns it seems that way. For me though I am talking first and second ring.
First ring:
Shrewsbury
Grafton
Millbury
Auburn
Leicester
Paxton
Holden
West Boylston
Boylston
Second ring:
Northborough
Westborough
Upton
Northbridge
Sutton
Oxford
Charlton
Spencer
Oakham
Rutland
Princeton
Sterling
Clinton
Berlin
Some of my favorite stuff in the suburbs:
Wachusett Reservoir (Boylston, West Boylston, Clinton)
Wachusett Mountain (Princeton)
Tower Hill Botanical Garden (Boylston)
Isador's (Oxford)
Buffumville Dam (Charlton, Oxford)
The Old Timer (Clinton)
Harry's (Westborough)
West Boylston Cinema (West Boylston)
Davis Mega Maze (Sterling)
Willy's Steakhouse and Sushi (Shrewsbury)
Anyone care to add awesome stuff to this list?
Re: Best of the 'Burbs
Gale Memorial Library in Holden
Trout Brook Reservation, Holden
Rail Trail in West Boylston/Holden
Re: Best of the 'Burbs
What's the Rail Trail? Sounds kind of awesome.
Re: Best of the 'Burbs
Gabe,
The Rail Trail is a chain of converted railroad tracks used as biking paths that extends around the country. The closest is, I think, out by the Wachusett Reservoir (Stone Church and Bob's - mmmmm - Hot Dogs). It's right near Tremolo Lounge!
As for a couple of out of town restaurants:
Yama Zakura - Northboro
Picasso's - Barre center
Re: Best of the 'Burbs
Amici's Trattoria - Shrewsbury
Cournoyer's farm stand - Paxton
Monument Grill - Leominster (3rd tier? but an easy drive and worth it)
Rt. 190 - just a pleasure to drive
Farmer's Daughter - Auburn, for all sorts of pumkins in the fall
Deer Run Tree Farm - Princeton (well hidden), because I love how rugged it is
Rail trail - W. Boylston, but it's broken right now
The Quinnie - Holden (find the unofficial rail trail off Quinapoxet St., then follow the river up and down on fire roads)
Re: Best of the 'Burbs
Grafton - Art Bradish's Snack Bar
Westboro - Julio's Liquors
Re: Best of the 'Burbs
Not to derail a nice start to a list but... Does the stretch from Mendon thru Uxbridge Douglas Webster Dudley Southbridge not count because of geography or too many mullets?
Re: Best of the 'Burbs
Geography and the fact that I work with so many people from Webster who have no friggin idea about anything in Worcester. Even when I lived in Oxford I always thought Webster and Southbridge had their own thing going on, for better or worse.
Re: Best of the 'Burbs
What's wrong with mullets?
I have wanted to grow one for many years, but they've been stygmatized by narrow-minded people who, for some reason, have a problem with the Tennessee Top-Hat.
If I want a little business in the front, and party in the back, who should care. And by the way, what's wrong with Winger?
Re:
Yama Zakura - Northboro
This looks pretty good!
Re: Best of the 'Burbs
The West Boylston section of the Rail Trail is currently closed due to beaver damage. I guess a pretty substantial portion got washed out and it's a pretty big mess from what I've been told. It's too bad because it was a great place to bike or run away from traffic and concrete. Here's hoping it gets fixed soon.
Re: Best of the 'Burbs
Sapporo Korean BBQ in Westborough... same family that owned and operated Seoul Leecci on Main St. in Worcester.

another reason to develop the Wild Beaver Rub...

I second this. Had a great meal and experience there.
Another I forgot is Zimmy's, in Leicester, near the Route 9 turnoff toward Becker and Route 56. I haven't been in a little while, so it may even be closed, but this place is great. Housed in a former pizza parlor, the chef will basically whip up anything you want, entirely from scratch. Great food, reall cheap, for those who don't mind an oilcloth and mismatched silverware table setting.

pyrimids and maple hill disc golf courses in leister

FYI - Zimmy's has changed hands so it's possibly not the place Matt visited back in the day. Someone check it out and let us know if it's still the same culinary field trip it was ....

Zimmy's is no longer owned by the same people and sadly it has totally changed. They have the same name and the new owners are very nice but it doesn't have the same menu or style as it used too. Also, I am a Leicester native and I don't recall it being a pizza parlor, it was a deli for many years.

And right across the parking lot from Sapporo is my favorite local Italian restaurant, Arturo's.
Re: Best of the 'Burbs
John is that the same people that ran Arturo's what used to be on Chandler St in Worcester? That place had delicious food. I was sad when they left town.
Re: Best of the 'Burbs
Same ones, Duncan. Moved to the money, I guess.
For a while it was the only game on the West Side.
Re: Best of the 'Burbs
Midstate trail - Oxford
Tiny Tim's Cafe - Rochdale
Isadora's - Oxford (I know you already said it, but I love it too much to not add it to my list)
Charlton Flea Market - Charlton

Yes, same restaurant, same great food. Arturo just retired this year, but the restaurant is still thriving, and the new owner is keeping the same quality food and service while adding a few great new items (one is a summer risotto that is to die for). We walk down and eat at the bar all the time.
