I heard about this recently and I'm curious if Worcesterites would be interested in having this event hosted in Worcester.
Peche Kucha Peche Kucha started in Japan in 2003 and has now been hosted in 110 cities worldwide. There is one coming up in Boston on April 15th...
Heres the pitch:
What is Pecha Kucha Night?
Pecha Kucha Night, devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (Klein Dytham architecture), was conceived in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public.
But as we all know, give a mike to a designer (especially an architect) and you’ll be trapped for hours. The key to Pecha Kucha Night is its patented system for avoiding this fate. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each – giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show.
Pecha Kucha (which is Japanese for the sound of conversation) has tapped into a demand for a forum in which creative work can be easily and informally shown, without having to rent a gallery or chat up a magazine editor. This is a† demand that seems to be global – as Pecha Kucha Night, without any pushing, has spread virally to over 100 cities across the world. Find a location and join the conversation.
Re: Pecha Kucha Night
Here's whatWikihas to say.
"There are no restrictions on the type of content that could be presented. Some organizers have added their own variations to the format. In Groningen, in the Netherlands, two slots are given to a live band, and the final 20 seconds of each presentation consists of an immediate critique of the presentation by the host’s sidekicks. In Oulu, Finland which is the most northerly Pecha Kucha city in the world, some philosophers use the format. In Minneapolis, Minnesota, several university scientists presented rapid-fire slideshow talks on evolution during a 2009 Darwin Day event. [6] In Los Angeles, a number of geographers have begun to use the format to explain and visually demonstrate their research. Video art has also been presented at some events. Variants include Pecha Kucha mash-ups with other Japanese pop-culture contributions: Pecha Kucha karaoke (creating a narrative of someone else's slide show) and Pecha Kucha Iron Chef (duelling presenters competing for audience appreciation)."
so, what do you think?
Re: Pecha Kucha Night

Re: Pecha Kucha Night
Bocado has that back bar with the screen.
Re: Pecha Kucha Night
Scott Boilard is into it too! When? When?
Re: Pecha Kucha Night
was the one at work an official pecha kucha? I didn't see Worcester or West Boylston on the list of city's.
I became a member on the site so I could get more information. Seeing there's a few of us interested now I'll gather more info from them.
Re: Pecha Kucha Night
great idea... you could also consider having it at the TRIBECA. they have 2 rooms upstairs with flat screen tvs equipped for direct feed from your laptop without the need for a projector, and they are extremely accomodating there. I host meetings there regularly.
Re: Pecha Kucha Night
Would love to attend. Keep the thread going and announce where and when. Thanks.
Re: Pecha Kucha Night
Cindy,
No we weren't official, I requested info from them and never heard back so I could do a Worcester one. We did it our way. We have a great room with projection and just did it internally with the artists. It was inspiring to all...and we know each other and our art well. We all learned so much more about outside interests that lead to ultimate inspiration. Seeing through someone elses eyes for a little bit is pretty amazing, especially for other creatives. It really is remarkable to see inside the minds of our peers who come from all different backgrounds. So worth attending, even if you don't present.
Let me know what I can do to help.
Michelle
Re: Pecha Kucha Night
I haven't heard anything back yet either.
Tonight Providence RI is holding their first event, Portsmouth NH had their first one last month, Portland ME has thier 7th coming up in May and Boston has TWO coming up. I am getting in contact with the organizers at these cities to see what the process is like to get it going.
Any member of the Pecha Kucha website is welcome ask to present at any event and they are all open to the public. So if a Worcester night takes some time to start up we can always jump in on some of these others.

Re: Pecha Kucha Night
Coincidentally, my friend is going to the one in Providence tonight. They are calling it "performance art". I will get the lowdown tomorrow from Emily and let you know. I think the more diverse the crowd --the better...fine art, architecture, music, advertising etc. This could be pretty cool and it is so enlightening that I can see how people would be drawn to come back again for more.
Let me know if you are planning to attend any of the above and I will join.
Thanks! Michelle
Re: Pecha Kucha Night
I went to the premier installment of the Providence Pechu Kucha Night last night and it was just awesome and am totally psyched about the prospect of having one in worcester. There was no reference to it being "performance art" though, it was a proper Pecha Kucha format with a very diverse range of fascinating topics being presented ranging from RISD student's MFA projects to a hilarious presentation by a guy sharing 20 photos of the ubiquitous and very odd looking "Apex" building in Pawtucket and a statement about the effect of urban landscapes on our collective consciousness.
The two things that were most exciting about the experience were a) the general level of creative discussion and conversation the atmosphere generated in the crowd and b) the genuine Providence pride and local/home grown enthusiasm that the room was buzzing with. There was no specific take away or call to action that any given presentation prompted, but the sum total of the excitement and energy from the creative juices that were flowing were very real, palpable and inspiring. Not to mention that I'm sure the presenters received lots of great feedback and generated tons of contacts.
Providence has the creative momentum of places like RISD, AS220 and a vibrant design/architecture community to fuel such a successful evening, but I have no doubt that worcester has enough talent to pull off a kick ass night of sharing ideas.
Re: Pecha Kucha Night
Fantastic! I'm planning to head out to the Boston one.
If you had to guess, how many people were in attendance last night?
Re: Pecha Kucha Night
I'll deff be in Boston too, trying to work on a preso to submit for a later date.
I'm really bad at estimating heads. Maybe 50 to 100? I dunno. Packed in any case and the Guiness ran dry before the event even started.
Apparently an email went out through the local chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (aiga.org) earlier in the day and roused a ton of last minute interest. Most people I spoke with had no idea what Pecha Kucha even was before that announcement. Would be nice to be able to tap into a similar vein in olde wormtown.
Re: Pecha Kucha Night
So great! Cindy, I am pretty excited for this. As I said we did a small one and it fueled my creative spirit for weeks.
I saw the images online from the Prov night and it definately was a packed house.

Cant to see what you two have put together for us.
Re: Pecha Kucha Night
OK, I have to ask - why does it start at 7:20? Talks at 8:20, etc.? What's the number 20 all about?!

Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each
It all adds up! 20 seconds, 20 slides, 20 minutes after the hour, 20 ounces of soda in a bottle, 20 cigarettes in a pack, 20/20 vision...
Re: Pecha Kucha Night
When devleoping PechaKucha Klein Dytham found everything worked better in 20's.
