NYT will not sell Worcester Telegram & Gazette

Globe story:

The New York Times Co. said today it won't sell the Worcester Telegram & Gazette after spending several months exploring a possible sale.

Times Co. chairman Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr. claims that:

What has become abundantly apparent is that the T&G is making substantial progress in transforming every part of its journalistic and business operations. As a result, you are doing an even better job in meeting the needs of your readers and your communities in Central Massachusetts.

This, of course, has not been easy year. Nevertheless, month after month, you have demonstrated a relentless determination and heightened focus, as you have implemented a complete redesign of the newspaper into a single-edition paper, the transformation of the classified section into a more reader-friendly and efficient six-column format and the creation of zoned weeklies to complement our daily newspaper. You have also created new products to offer to our commercial print customers and a new Direct Mail vehicle, T&G Direct.

Any T&G subscribers out there think the paper is serving them better now than in the recent past?

Re: NYT will not sell Worcester Telegram & Gazette

A "complete redesign of the newspaper into a single-edition paper" and "the creation of zoned weeklies to complement our daily newspaper" pretty much sums it up, doesn't it?

In other words -- Good for you, Telegram, for completely cutting coverage of the towns, but for continuing to pay lip service to local coverage by printing press releases in an easy-to-digest format.

The only "community" the Telegram is serving at this point is the NYT stockholders, and the only "readers" it's serving are those who read the NYT Quarterly reports.

Re: NYT will not sell Worcester Telegram & Gazette

I don't subscribe to the paper (though I read it online, and would have no problem paying a few bucks a month to do so if it meant they'd finally update their slow-ass web site), but damn do the "T&G Direct" junk mailings piss me off. Twice a week I have to take a thick sheaf of advertisements for crap I'd never buy and throw it directly into the recycle bin without a second glance. What a waste of paper, ink, and energy.

I can't tell if this is good news or bad news.

Re: NYT will not sell Worcester Telegram & Gazette

I have seen people argue passionately that a change in ownership would be a great thing, but I haven't found the arguments convincing either way.
