401 K/ DOW

steele here's picture

Jesus, what a freaking mess.

If I was 65ish and getting ready to retire, and was watching my "nest egg" take a huge hit the last 6 months, I would be shitting bricks.

....I have a ways to go before I retire, so most of us can absorb these down trends.

..but I was just on my 401K page, and have been enrolled in my company 401K since 2000....through those years have had various rates of return, etc.

However, the one key rate of return to look at is "SINCE INCEPTION"...meaning how much has your plan incresed or decreased since you signed up for the plan (in my case 8 years ago).

well, my since inception rate of return is: 1.15 %

..hey at least i'm in the positive. But it pretty much means for the last 8 years, I could have pretty much invested in Baseball Cards and probably would have made more.......WTF....we will see what the next 20 years brings.

Pretty much you just gotta play for your employer contribution as your "gains". Hey, I know we are gonna go through another Bull market in the next 20 years..but damn, 1.15% for 8 years? Shit, I should have bought about 2000 David Ortiz Rookie Cards.

Re: 401 K/ DOW

ha. dude u should have ur 401k set to high risk. ur prob running with low risk / low return stocks thats why.

401k is for the long term. stock stock stock stock.... or just pick some index funds.

it will go down in bursts, but it goes up in bursts too. even if u just bought index funds over decades the returns are phenomenal. time is ur greatest asset, let it work for u.

Re: 401 K/ DOW

I moved a good portion of my 401k in to the US Bond Index and have pulled 4% gains since. My higher risk funds have put me at -19% since Jan 08. It's a fucked up market. My personal stock portfolio....I really don't want to talk about it.

Re: 401 K/ DOW

Make sure your 401k uses DCA (dollar cost averaging) to invest your monthly contribution. Some do, some don't. Some are stuck the way they are issued, others can be changed only on specific dates, some can be changed pretty much whenever.
I used to set up 401k's for a living, and while I'm no expert, this is the best way for you to maximize your return over the long haul, no matter how low the lows or how high the highs get in the market. You're in your thirties, right? If so, then you'll probably change jobs some time before you need your distributions, so when you transfer your 401k in the future, choose one with the DCA option.

Re: 401 K/ DOW

dude you should never keep ur shit in bonds for ur retirement for longer than a few years. maybe 10-15% of ur portfolio but not all of it. thats crazy dude.

i can see how temp moving ur investments is ok... but u should def be buying the high risk stuff... especially now when stocks are "tanking". thats the whole advantage of having 30-40 years... the short term gains from time now to time recover grow way more. itll destroy ur 3% in 1/4 of the time.

tom u should know this. e to the mother fucking x bitch.

Re: 401 K/ DOW

dude, im no dummy, i don't have it said to low risk. I have it set to high risk...i'm 100% in stocks, some international, some growth markets, some technol markets etc....like I said, over the years I have had yearly returns of 7, 8, 9%, and am at 7% over the last 5 years...but since inception (October 2000), I'm only at plus 1.15%

..and yes, in my 30's so still have plenty of time...I mix up the percentages a bit over the last 8 years and changed in and out of a few funds...i just hate to see my since inception rate so low.

here's my grid printout from today:

Personal Rate of Return as of 08/31/2008
Last 3 Months -8.69%
1 Year -6.45%
3 Year Annualized 6.23%
5 Year Annualized 7.37%
10 Year Annualized N/A*

Re: 401 K/ DOW

WAMU has HUGE exposure to mortgages, $239 billion in real eastate loans, $59 billion which are adjustable rate...

Stock hovering just over $2.00.

Word seems to be that they may be acquired by Chase.

You're right. How would I ever survive a massive hangover Sunday, on the couch without the USA Network.

Seriously, you're too young to worry about you loses. The people that were your age on Black Monday (the non jumpers that is) are probably living large right now. Unless of course they killed themselves after the Dot com crisis...BUY GOLD and GUNS!!!

Craig, I'm not completely retarded. If I am making no money on my investments, I'll take 4% and then reshuffle again. I'm not funnelling my paychecks in to bonds, I moved what I had in to them. I'm still putting money in to my international, company, and mid-caps.

Not really, but a lot of mofo's picked up some serious bargains today. Hope your fund manager was one of them.

Re: 401 K/ DOW

if you are 65 and have that much exposure to the stock market that you are watching your nest egg disappear, you are retarded. You can't go live with your kids, because if they have your genes, they are likely to have already racked up so much credit card debt that they are now living in a 73 cordoba.

But you aren't 65, and you are smart enough to know you are in it for the long haul.

me...I picked up WAMU yesterday at 2.3 :)

as some one else said, now is the time to buy!

Re: 401 K/ DOW

I'd buy more, but I'm buying a house next friday and all my money is tied up in stocks that crashed me nearly half of my investments. I can't pull out of these right now to buy other crashed stocks.

Re: 401 K/ DOW

I hear ya...I have been reluctant to get into the market...by reluctant I mean...didn't have the money :)

The other day I got a nice surprise, a bunch of treasuries from when I was born. Rather than getting a crappy interest rate, I decided to see if I could do better myself.

Well, the NYT has a wire story out that shareholders will get totally hosed.
"Shareholders and some bondholders will be wiped out..." is how the story puts it.

I really hope that Terrible Buddhist didn't blow too much money on his buy, cuz I think it was all flushed down the john.

If you were 65ish, you'd still have about 15 years you could keep working. It's time to raise the retirement age for social security..

Re: 401 K/ DOW

Social security is based on exactly the same kind of thinking that brought us Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The only way to reform the S.S. system is to privatize (the only way money ever grows) at least a portion of it. By the time we're old enough to collect, the program might still be called "Social Security", but the entire system will have either changed or collapsed.
Sadly, politicians on both sides of the aisle are just as afraid to mention the certain failure of SS as they were to mention the certain failure of the GSE's. On the bright side, basic economics will force their hand sooner rather than later.

terrible_buddhist's picture

Re: 401 K/ DOW

I bought a hundred shares of WAMU @ $2.20...thought the bailout would come and make everything alllllll right...WRONG!

btw...retirement age has already been raised, and the people who said...good thing we didn't privatize SS don't understand the plan.

Re: 401 K/ DOW

Hey Steele,

Deal fell through. I didn't have 30k upfront for the repairs that were needed immediately. This house is on Kendig St. Closing pushed back to Oct 6th (bank's attourneys are still digging up papers).

steele here's picture

Re: 401 K/ DOW

ah yes, Kendig. I am very familiar my friend, that was my old hood back in the day..I grew up on Caro, and Kendig was only a few streets away. The one thing you might want to check on Kendig, is to find out how many of the houses on the street, if any, are actually owned by Holy Cross. Little by little, HC buys up the houses on most of those streets and rents them out to their students. Right now, I think Boyden and Caro, and Clay might be 100% HC owned.....Kendig might be partially on it's way.

I only bring it up cuz you might not want to come home to a bunch of HC kids taking a piss on your front lawn at 2am on a weekend night....it's party central in those neighborhoods.

deseeded's picture

Re: 401 K/ DOW

Well there's a family across the street with 3 kids, the young family next door with 3 kids, the two families up closer to the end of the street with young teens and some younger kids, and the lack of triple-decker/two-families, I'd say I'm pretty ok.

There is an apt across the street and closer to the end which had a steady stream of jock-types pouring in and out the other weekend. They had a ripping party it looks like, but they had it all cleaned up by 11am. Pretty good....seeing as there are little kids who live right next door.

rents in that area tom are off the chains. like almost 25-50% more than anywhere else in worcester.

my friend bought a 3 fam near there recently. $12-1500 for 3BRs all up and down that hill. thanks rich parents

i couldnt believe it. the numbers work incredibly well immediately out of the box.

something to consider about that area, youd be pretty safe if things got rough... unless of course HC decides to make everyone live on campus.
