"Local" source of coat/hard drive?

delnieve's picture

All this week I'm trying to "shop locally":

I am feeling the need for a new winter coat and some external hard drives. Any ideas for locally-owned businesses that sell these?

Depending on the type of coat you're looking for, you could try New England Backpacker.

Re: "Local" source of coat/hard drive?

i'm a great believer in shopping used first and there's nothing more local than church thrift shops - st anne in shrewsbury is super good - i don't think abby's has men's stuff but it's great for us girls.

if you're looking for rugged wear, jed's hardware in holden carries a lot of carhart stuff and i'm sure other hardware places do too.

i "took the pledge" two years ago that i would not buy any clothes that were not used or made by me. aside from undies and technical sports clothing, i've been good to my pledge. better for the environment, better for the wallet, and ultimately better for my wardrobe. i have way better quality clothes now that i shop used - it;s like buying a used car. let someone else take the full-price hit. i come in a while later and get some really nice clothes that i never would have shelled out full (or even sale) price for.

something to consider anyway

as for the hard drive - i've got nothing. i go to computer central in holden for my computer repair needs and they seem to sell a small selection of items, but i've never scrutinized them that closely

good luck

Actually, Abby's House recently started carrying men's clothes. The selection is relatively small compared to women's clothes, but worth checking out.

One possiblity for a hard drive might be Technical Computer Solutions http://www.tcs3.com/ now on Lincoln St (used to be next to Ping's). I know they build and sell computers, so they might carry accessories too.

It would be interesting to also compare what you are paying by shopping locally with what you would pay if you shopped online or at a chain. It seems like a decent, cheap coat would be a good buy if you played your cards right, but I'm guessing a hard drive might cost you a bit more.

From what I understand, there's a store at the Summit (East Mountain Street) that sells computer parts for people who want to build their own PCs. Sorry - don't have the name.
