The Q gets entertainment back

duncan's picture

Worcesteria has the scoop on what is going on over at The Q on Chandler St. with their entertainment license. It looks like they can have it but with some stipulations.

"This morning, the commission approved an entertainment license for Q Café despite the numerous noise complaints from neighbors. But there’’s a catch. The license limits the underground-hipster spot to poetry readings and soft acoustic music. Further, no more than two musicians can perform at one time."

"underground-hipster spot" *gag*

...poetry and soft acoustic music...so hip, so underground.

I like the limit on how many musicians can perform?! What exactly does that accomplish?

Re: The Q gets entertainment back

They did this before, most recently at the Emerald Isle. The owners at that point made a compelling argument for allowing amplified acoustic music, but they were rejected with the explanation that it would no longer be acoustic.

Thus, using that logic, one bugle blower with a timpani player are less of a problem than 5 folk guitarists playing through a 15w amp on 5.

Now I get it.

I get the feeling that if it were up to Zippy the word hipster would be permanently removed from the English language.

To clarify, the Q Cafe proposed the regulations they are now following.

Re: The Q gets entertainment back

I find it funny that over here we're referred to as "underground hipsters"; it's been a big joke for all of us here at the Q. Most of our customers are college students or teachers, or computer geeks... some of us are poets, some are musicians, some are cartoonists, some are mathematicians. I guess that's what qualifies as a "underground hipster spot" these days.

On a more important note, this whole process has been a nightmare, and we're happy to finally have entertainment again. We limited ourselves to acoustic (unamplified) music and spoken word because it gave us a better chance of getting the license; these limitations are certainly better than nothing. Also, we are trying to be conscientious to our neighbors, most of whom have no problem with us. I'm not going to get into details here, as this is a public blog, suffice to say that what was said and written of us before was, on the whole, gross exaggeration and lies. (Charges of "public urination, strewn condoms"... etc etc). It should be noted that the police drive by our establishment five nights a week, (and have been since our last hearing) and have never noticed or reported a problem with us.

We have no shows set up at the moment (frankly, I was a little surprised that we got the license). I imagine we'll start up with music the weekend of the 24th; any booking requests can be sent to me (themadcowboy@gmail.com). Also, any questions regarding the shit we've been through can be directed there as well, if you're really curious.

Our hours are now 11:00am to 11:00pm as well.

thanks for posting BrotherNailgun. Just to clarify, we didn't call you "underground hipsters" here.

I think this would be a great opportunity to try out a new band setup:

8 people with different instruments switching spots on stage one or two at a time like 15 times a song.

No problem, sir.

No worries about the whole "underground hipster" thing. I know it wasn't this site that referred to us in such a way, and honestly, it's not a big deal. It just gives some people the wrong impression when they hear that we're a bunch of hipsters.

Re: The Q gets entertainment back

Anyone remember the "Buggsy's(?)" debacle? The joint claimed to be a restaurant with light music (something like that), and turned out to be a dive that blared garbage hip-hop all night long. The "Q" may be victim of the "Fool me once..." sentiment that those clowns engendered.
That stuff aside, what do people expect? We (the generic "we" of course) insist that the "City" cure all of our ills and then bitch when the "City" prematurely overreacts and over regulates?

Good luck to the "Q", and good luck to "Hal Goodson's's One Man Band", or whoever plays there on a banging Saturday night.

Re: The Q gets entertainment back

I am not surprised at all and never was and never bitched about what happened with the Q. Opening up a business like that west of Park Ave was just asking for trouble. Spiritual Haze will be next unless the far reaching arm of Clark U covers for them. Hopefully the Q can continue to be successful with their limited entertainment license.
