Top Restaurants that you love, that no one else does!

VintageShake's picture

I was talking to a friend of mine today, trying to convince her to come with me to Sapporo in Westboro to try Soon Du bu (yum) with me. Her response was this- " Why do you have to eat such weird food? No one would want to eat that stuff!".

So, I was wondering if anyone else had any conversations like this... and if they would post the restaurants that their friends or family would not like to eat at, but you absolutely adore.

I'll start-

Like stated above-

Sapporo in Westboro-
There is nothing like a super-spicy gelatinous soft tofu and egg stew like Soon du bu to get you feeling good on a winter day! If you are a vegetarian though- make sure to ask for it vegetarian.. and then ask for vegetarian sides (always remember, kim chi is not veg). They also do Korean barbecue for those meat eaters out there!

El Basha in Worcester-
Alot of people I know do not have very sophisticated pallets... so the thought of hummus is a no-no to them. Even though they've never tried it. I have yet to convince someone to come eat with me here.

Kyoto in Lincoln plaza-
Your typical Japanese restaurant. I've had nothing but good experiences there, but know a few people who have had bad food from there. Regardless- I can't get anyone to eat with me here either!

Da Lat on Park ave-

Just a Vietnamese place... that no one will go to with me. Great Boba though... and even better spring rolls! Yum!

So, what is your list?

I love Da Lat, totally love it. Those fresh rolls with the peanut sauce, I want them right now.

I agree- I would go get them if I didn't just get my wisdom teeth yanked! When we go there, My boyfriend and I each order our own set of spring rolls. <3

I love Dante's on Shrewsbury Street (across from Piccadilly Pub area). Some really great dishes—most people that I talk to either haven't heard of it or don't want to go because it looks like someone's house and isn't in the main section of the street. Either way, the food is great.

I've never heard of Dante's, from the looks of it, it is an Italian place? It has some rave reviews on yelp though, so i'm definitely going to give it a shot- especially at my latest disappointment at Dino's service! Thanks for the new joint!

Thai Island in Holden makes some good fresh rolls except you have to request the peanut sauce (kikcs ass also) because it comes with some hot and sweet concoction.

I like La Taptia Taqueria in Marlboro, really good Mexican. I eat there as often as I can because I'm afraid they'll go out of business.

Is La Taptia a vegetarian friendly Mexican restaurant? Do you know?

I never understood everyone's fascination with Da Lat - there are tons of Vietnamese joints in town, and that one's not my favorite - and everyone raves about it. I don't NOT like Da Lat, but I like Pho Dakao better...

I have tried many of the other ones too, something about Da Lat just really tastes great to me. I also like Pho 2000.

Is Pho 2000 the one in Webster Square? I ate there once, great food if I'm thinking of the right place...

Yeah, towards Leicester on Rt9 right before the road to the airport.

I'm not sure. I know they have cheese enchiladas but I'm not sure that the sauce wasn't made from some sort of chicken stock. The beans and rice is good also but once again I can't promise that the beans do not have lard in them.
Sorry.

I started working in Westborough last June and have since discovered the joy of Sapporo, my co-workers and I hit up their lunch buffet nearly every week. They have a great blend of Korean and Japanese (with sushi) to make a good mix of yummy Asian foods, and their Miso soup is one of the best I've had!

We all left Massachusetts 4 years ago but when we're back in town we tend to make it to Da Lat at least once. Are they the bestest? Maybe not. But they're quite good and not expensive. We always get the vermicelli with shrimp or bbq.

Also, O'Connor's is a Worcester treasure. Quick: name three other great Irish restaurants. Anywhere in America. I've been around a bit and I can't name one.

All done with nice.

Agreed on all of the above. Not to deal in semantics, but, are these restaurants that no one likes? They're all pretty popular, I think.

Robert's Fish & Chips on Grafton St. I used to live right down the street from it and it's just awesome. Some people are put off by the bellies still being on the fried clams, but I love 'em. I've been there once since the most recent ownership change but the fish is still as good as I remember.

Now I live within walking distance of La Tapatia, and yet I've only been there once, so JoeTaco, you just let me know when you are going to be there.

I would think the people who frequent this site have more of a refined palate and interest in what is going on around them. The average folk, however, would probably not drive by most of these places and say "OOOH gotta stop!". Average folk would go to Chili's and call it a day.

Not only does it not suck, but it's also the name of my favorite track on the Cavedogs' "Joyride For Shut-ins" album.
