Last ACTION GEEK cartoon in InCity Times

actiongeek's picture

After alot of soul-searching (as contrived as that may sound)
and talking with friends, professional peers, other artists, etc.
I decided to voluntarily end my run of editorial / personal
cartoons within the pages of the InCity Times.

Publisher Rosalie Tirella does what she does, but I just don't
want to be a part of what it is that she does anymore.

I only wish that Worcester had any other print options:
The Worcester Telegram barely covers local issues as it is
and would never run a cartoon such as mine is.
Worcester Magazine opted to get rid of my cartoon in favor
of fluff that really didn't make any waves whatsoever.
They claimed to have wanted a "younger, fresher voice" which,
at the time, was merely code for "you're too loud / controversial,
Doug" and "we'd rather take on Andy Fish's less wave-making,
more easily-palletable to our readers girlfriend". Whatever.
WoMag may think it's the alternative, but it really doesn't
go far enough to really represent Worcester.

Action Geek will continue in 'zine form, online form, other
artistic endeavor-form. I refuse to compromise my message.
I've never pulled any punches. My cartoons speak from my own
uniquely damaged yet ever-hopeful heart. Those who know me
best know that I'm passionate about what I do and only wish
that where I live was more accepting of what I say / create.

And on that note, here's the last Action Geek - InCity Times cartoon:

That takes a lot of integrity to make a choice like that, I respect that!

It's not me, it's you.

Re: Last ACTION GEEK cartoon in InCity Times

Okay Dougie, that's enough.
Veronica's work is hanging in galleries RIGHT now in LA, San Francisco, Brooklyn and Boston. She was invited to participate in an LA show being hosted by director Kevin Smith-- she's legitimate and makes A LIVING doing art.

She curated Pop Euphoria which was one of ArtsWorcester's most successful shows and she does the comic strip at WoMag because THEY ASKED HER TO. We didn't do it to destroy your dreams, you did that yourself with your constant negative pissed off attitude.

She's earned every bit of accolade she's gotten completely on her own. She spends about fifteen minutes every two weeks on Zanzo Moxie because that's about what it's worth with that pay.

The ironic thing here is I was a fan of Action Geek and back when WoMag editor Mike Warshaw wanted to axe you six years ago I talked him out of it. Now you take shots at me?

Your negativity is what has hurt you in both relationships (I know her Doug) and professionally (I know your old Graphic Design boss too!). Stop being jealous of everyone else's success and the fact that Worcester can't recognize your genius.

Do me a favor, the next time we're at an event together PLEASE introduce yourself-- I'd love to continue this conversation in person.

Andy

PS- she's my fiance not my girlfriend-- didn't you get the invitation??

It's petty and self-serving to post content that includes a personal attack agianst another artist. You should reconsider leaving InCity Times. This is the kind of stuff that fits right in there.

I happen to agree with Andy, Derek and Alison's posts. Attacking someone's fiance, girlfriend or wife is just not cool. It just makes you sound very petty. It just sounds like sour grapes.

Veronica Hebard is a well-respected artist. Her success and involvement with Womag has nothing to do with being Andy Fish's fiance. It has everything to do with the FACT she's a very talented artist.

And she very kind in person too who would never be cruel to anyone!! Just ask both the people she works with and her students!! She's a consummate professional who doesn't use these types of forums to rip people apart. So, to attack someone who has never said a negative thing about you in such a demeaning way is just cruel.

Anyone who has ever been pushed into the corner of a fence in a schoolyard just DOES NOT even dream about doing something like this to somebody else. Only bullies are that petty.

Seriously. Veronica's a huge talent. She's insanely skilled, and yet the definition of grace. Doug, regardless of whatever opinions you want to harbor about the city, Womag, InCity, or whoever else, you should take that shit back about Veronica.

I guess you consider your bluntness and word-heavy style to be your strength. That it's something we should admire you for, and even be more like that ourselves. Reconsider that. Not going to happen. It puts you out of step with the rest of the world, and severely limits your opportunities in life.

Try some subtlety in your work, use some metaphors. Use less words and more descriptive pictures. Right now, your comics have the same level of cinematography as Garfield. Try forcing the reader to make visual connections, rather than forcing them to read an angry 5000-word editorial.

After all these years, it's not our fault if you haven't grown as an artist. And these public tantrums don't hurt us, only you. It's undignified for someone who has been working as long as you have. You shouldn't still be confusing your strengths and weaknesses. With your visual style, you could ABSOLUTELY make a legit career in editorial illustration (those wordless illos that accompany articles), but for fuck's sake, just shut up and draw.

And take back what you said about Veronica. She's earned more respect than that.

Re: Last ACTION GEEK cartoon in InCity Times

Doug,
You refer to Veronica Hebard not by name but only as "Andy Fish's girlfriend." This is demeaning. Veronica's vast breadth of work stands on its own merit and is sought by galleries and commercial clients worldwide owing to her skill, phenomenal talent, unique point of view, and unwavering professionalism. Veronica is also a fantastic teacher, a revered colleague, and a dear friend. Change is immensely difficult but it can also be an opportunity to pass the torch in the spirit of collegiality. I hope it's not too late for this.

Good move leaving InCity, Doug. Still, there's no call whatsoever for taking out your frustration over the few local print options on Veronica, who's top-shelf at the drawing board and away from it. Make another good move and apologize.
